Ask TUAW: Boot Camp migration, Photo Booth sans flash, monitoring bandwidth and more
This week in Ask TUAW we've got questions on using Photo Booth without the flash, scheduling emails in Mail.app, monitoring bandwidth usage, migrating a Boot Camp partition and more.As always, your suggestions are most welcome, and questions for next week should be left in the comments. When asking a question please include which machine you're running and which version of Mac OS X, (we'll assume you're running Leopard on an Intel Mac if you don't specify). And now, on to the questions!
William asks
How can I make all current and future Finder windows open the same size - the default size is too small for my liking, and I generally like the window to be about 80% of my screen size (1280x800).
You're supposed to be able to do this automatically. If you have only one Finder window on the screen, resize and position it as you like. Close that window and then new windows should have the same size. However, it's a known issue that this doesn't always work this way for some people. One possibility is that your hidden .DS_Store files are corrupt as described here. Unfortunately, I don't think a completely reliable solution is available if it's not working for you.
Secondly, how can I disable the white flash in Photo Booth when it takes a photo? It generally makes my face overexposed and I've never managed to get a good photo because of it.
As some fellow readers suggested, just hold down the shift key while hit the button and the flash won't fire. Incidentally, the option key with allow you to forego the 3 second countdown. The keys can also be used together.

Been wondering for a long time if there was a simple way using mail.app to schedule an outgoing email to be sent at a particular time in the future. If not, does anyone know any other mail application (even web based) that has this function?
You'll need to use an Applescript to do this. Have a look at Mail Scripts which uses iCal to do that actual scheduling.

Hi, In the last few months I've totally switched over to Mac's (now own 3!!!), and recently just upgraded my UK Broadband service, which, whilst now much faster, is capped at 75GB of downloads per month. However, the ISP's download meter is broken and they are not inclined to fix it. I've google'd and searched, but I can't find a free or inexpensive download meter for OS X - something that just keeps track of all data coming down the pipe into my house.
As fellow reader Gino suggested, have a look at SurplusMeter (donations requested) from SkoobySoft. Keep in mind that this will only track the traffic through your Mac. If you have a home router and use other devices or computers their bandwidth usage will not be tracked. In that case, you'd probably be better off tracking it with your router if it includes that functionality.

1) I have a MacBook with a Boot Camp Windows partition which doesn't work right now. I was unable to install the last Boot Camp Update before the last Windows update automatically installed. I saved what I hope is a back-up that pre-dates the Windows update. But, I think (fingers crossed) I have a back-up of the partition from prior to the Windows update. How do I fix this problem in both situations?
Frankly, I'm not quite sure what you're asking. How did you backup the Windows partition? If you have a byte-level backup you could just uninstall Boot Camp (from OS X), reinstall Boot Camp, then copy over the backup.
2) I just bought a new MacBook. How do I transfer my Boot Camp partition above to my new one? Given the above situation, should I do it directly from my hard drive (I feared it was only a Firewire HD, but it does have USB 2.0, too), or would it be easier to do so directly from my older MB, assuming we get the partition to work again there? Is there software that makes it easy to migrate my Windows partition from one Mac to another, or is easier just do it from the back-up?
The easiest way to do this would be with Winclone (donations requested). Keep in mind, however, that you may potentially have drivers issues when you attempt to boot the new MacBook from the old Windows install.

I've been using Macs for about 8 years now. i have yet to find a fast way in Finder to check a jpg's pixel dimensions. i remember that on a pc you can just right click, goto properties and in the summary tab, it will tell you width & height in pixels. i dont know how to do this on a mac without opening up photoshop.
I'm not entirely sure what's going on here. If you select a jpg in column view doesn't it give you the pixel dimensions in the preview pane? You should also be able just to select the file and invoke Get Info ( ⌘+i ) to get the size.

If you're lucky enough to live in Australia, there's a wicked solution to monitoring bandwidth:

And it's free (for now)

dims don't always show up with images. when that happens, i generally just drag the image into an open browser window; it shows me the dims in the title space. not optimal, but sometimes you don't have another choice (i generally only run into this problem on a network).

if you have "show item info" in the view option ticked when in icon view the dimensions will show up under the title in blue text

In some cases, I have found that pixel dimensions do NOT show, either in the method you describe or in get info. I don't know why, exactly, since in most cases it works. Perhaps it is stored in metadata and some jpgs have lost their metadata?
jonathan said 10:09AM on 1-22-2009
i know i can do it with Show Item Info, but it's something i would have to continually check on/off. there's too many steps there. like a whole 2-3. i'm mouse lazy. And like Max said, it doesn't always work. I've never had pixel dimensions show up in the Get Info pop-up window. opening up a finder window in column view WOULD solve the problem, but i'm looking for a solution as quick as Get Info or QuickLook. That would make it easiest. thanks guys!

For the person wanting to send automated email...using mail.app.
Automator does a perfect job with scheduling.
WE use it on the hour to make sure our internet email is processing...

Hi. I'd like to be able to use Bootcamp to dual boot my MacBook between the currently installed Leopard and Windows XP, however the superdrive in my MacBook is out of action. I thought I might be able to use a USB stick as the source of the Windows files, and have created a bootable USB with the install files that boots fine on my PC, but I've had trouble getting the MacBook to boot from it. I tried using rEFIt to boot the disk with no success either.
Can you suggest a solution to installing windows without using the CD- drive? I have a spare iPod available, as I've read about Macs booting from an iPod with no trouble.

You can use Remote Disk Sharing. Just find another Mac that's running Leopard and under Sharing in System Preferences, check off the CD/DVD Sharing option. That should allow you to see whatever's in the 2nd Mac's Superdrive on the 1st.

So I back my Mac regularly through Time Machine to an external drive, but I would really like to start backing that data up to Amazon S3 for off-site protection. Do you the best way to kick off and then maintain such an endeavor?

We use JungleDisk to backup our macs and pcs to Amazon s3. I think it's about $20 per s3 account but can be used on as many machines as you want.

For some reason all of my jpegs will no longer show up in quicklook, nor give a preview in column view, it just shows the jpg icon.
Thanks.

Thanks, that's closer to what I was looking for. I saw the automater and applescript options but that would've been a little too challenging for my parents.

Is there an easy way to rename a bunch of files at once? I'm looking for a solution that is as easy as XP's, just highlight all the files, right-click and select rename. I've read a couple posts but they seem too complicated. I'm looking for a solution that is dead easy so I can give it to my parents, who aren't very tech inclined.

I use Name Mangler (donationware). There are many batch renaming
utilities available for the Mac, and also Automator and AppleScript options, but nothing built into the OS.

Hi, I have a late 07' Macbook Pro running 10.5.6 and have been wondering if there is a way to change how Finder displays a file name? I would like the file name to display "abcdefghij..." instead of the default "abcd...ijkl.txt" which forces me to resize my Finder window and Name column.

I use and recommend Jungledisk - makes it very easy and gives you a possible drive mounted to use as well.

Thanks for the tip, but is there a way to kick off a differential backup that writes the files to the JungleDisk at the same time (or around the same time) at which Time Machine does its thing?
ywamer said 11:33AM on 1-22-2009
Hi,
I recently decided to bite the bullet and start backing up my MacBook Pro's 160GB internal drive with Time Machine. Being tremendously informed, I wisely purchased a 320GB external drive, because, as I know, we must give Time Machine space for multiple versions.
The problem is that whenever Time Machine gets hold of my external drive (which i plug in about once per day) it seems to find 5-10 Gigs of data to backup. This is too much when the most productive thing I have done that day is browse the web, buy a few songs on iTunes, or work on some rather small PHP files.
Where is all this data coming from? And why in the heck is it filling up my new backup drive so quickly? Is there some sort of time-space black hole that has been opened up by my use of Time Machine. Or does everybody else here at TUAW already know the secret of managing the 'beast' and go about their days in relative peace and sanity? Help?!

@ywamer
do you use parallels or Fusion at all? Each time you use your Windows, it alters the one massive file that's your virtual windows harddrive. It would make sense to exclude it from your time machine backup plan. If not, I have no idea :-)
