Rumor: Snow Leopard to include QuickTime Pro
At long last, Apple will (allegedly) stop charging customers for the "Pro" features of QuickTime by building them into Snow Leopard. Finally. You'll recall that Apple has been gradually increasing the options available to the free version of QuickTime, like full screen playback mode. Other features of the Pro version -- like simple editing and export options -- were unlocked with in a recent developer's build of Snow Leopard.
Of course, this may be a way to let developers test all aspects of QuickTime, but we're hoping that's not the case. With the popularity of Apple's video editing software like iMovie and Final Cut, it seems that simple cut-and-paste should be free with QuickTime. Launching one of those apps just to complete a simple edit is overkill. Kind of like swatting a fly with a Buick.
We've got our fingers crossed.

They really should have stopped charging for QT Pro a long time ago, they can't be making a lot of money on it.
Also, I'd be nice to see more rumors on TUAW.

I disagree... leave the rumors for MacRumors, especially when they're 2 days old (an eternity in blog land).
That said, according to MR, this one is pretty credible since Apple typically doesn't axe out features between the shipping version and the developer seed.

They really CAN'T be making much money on QT Pro. Few people would pay for these features and those that would, I'd assume that they just download a serial number. Like I did!

Shame on you. QT Pro is a pitance for the powerful features it provides. Do you expect to work for free?

I can guarantee that its not true. SnowLeopard is just another OS. Why would they just kill an income source??
QuickTime Pro is great and several artists are paying for it. Even I got a QT Pro license.

I heard that Apple puts QT Pro in every Developer Preview of a new OS!

It wouldn't surprise me that that's the case--the beta of an OS includes Pro so that people can test everything out.

I can't believe that some of these features were in the Pro version!!
Present Movie... I use that every day when I wanna watch a TV show or movie on my external monitor hooked to my MBP.
Glad I cracked my QT Pro a looong time ago, although that is the only feature I really use. But I used it on a daily basis!

Anyone know when this SnowLeopard is supposed to be released? 2009? 2010?

I've got Final Cut Express on a Student license, but I would never buy QuickTime Pro.

I have FCE also, but I bought QT Pro. The price isn't that high and it's really convenient for quick and dirty editing. There are a lot of less-than-obvious features in QT. Like the ability to add multiple tracks, overlay watermarks, etc.
Honestly, I got my licence a couple years ago. What's $30 over two years? $.04/day.

QTP Pro cannot be included. Basic features, however, can be excluded :)

If only the basics were included, since similar features are included in other bundled or free apps anyway. I mean, full-screen playback, come on.

Noooo! Nine times out of ten that's a waste of time. If you want more made up rumors news, go to AI or Macrumors. That’s what they are best at. I mean, making up crap to get more hits and ad revenue.

Good on them! I always thought that having locked down options in a core OS component was rather, well, tacky!
Something I would expect to see in a MS operating system....

A simple addition of the "rotate" option would suffice. In the meantime I will continue to support the shareware community.

Man, I bought QTPro years ago. It was only $30. Great investment to. Sometimes people are just too cheap.

Wait, you paid for features like fullscreen? Do you also like burying diamond rings?
Murphy Mac said 5:02PM on 2-11-2009
I've never had a developer version of OS X - is this the first time the QT Pro features have been unlocked in a distribution? I assume it is or else there wouldn't be much else to base this rumor on....
