DVD Jon's Doubletwist sends and shares your media
Why, you might wonder, would we want another media program -- isn't iTunes enough? But a new app called Doubletwist (by DVD Jon, creator of the old DeCSS DRM-stripping software) looks to answer that question by taking an iTunes-style interface, and expanding it to pretty much anything you'd want to do with media -- send it to your own phones and portable devices, upload it to sites like Facebook or YouTube, or even send it off to your friends, even those who don't have the app. We first heard about Doubletwist about a year ago, but there wasn't a Mac version to speak of (so who cares, right?).But the Mac version is now out in public beta, and it's pretty impressive -- you can basically ignore file types, formats, or anything else that would keep you from sending a video, audio, or photo file from your computer out into the great blue yonder. There are a few other screencasts floating around as well, including this demo of the way the app works with pretty much any device you want, from
It seems very enticing (though I'm doubtful that all of the video converting and sharing really goes as fast as it looks in the video). But if you want to find out for yourself, have at it -- DoubleTwist is currently a free beta download for Intel 10.5 and up users.
Thanks Sebastiaan!

No wonder it reads like an advertisement. It is. Most software and hardware companies send out free "samples" to important bloggers, or even pay, to get their advertisements disguised as "articles". This is obviously the case, even if the writing lacked greatly in enthusiasm. Too bad!

Im sorry, this comment was supposed to be an answer to the first comment on the note on MacSpeech.

"There are a few other screencasts floating around as well, including this demo of the way the app works with pretty much any device you want, from iPod to Blackberry to even Android, the Sony PSP, and soon, the Nintendo DSi."
Seems odd that TUAW would say this given how iPhone-centric they are. Granted, I like the iPhone centricity. In this article, it was probably worth a mention that "pretty much any device you want" doesn't include the one device that I would guess a large portion of the TUAW readership has: an iPhone.

Did anyone notice... Andrew Stanton, after receiving Oscar for Wall-E, also mentioned Steve Jobs in this Thank-You speech for "creating a safehaven where movies like this could be made".

You do realize that Steve Jobs helped to create Pixar and is now the largest Disney shareholder after Disney bought Pixar? It does not mean that because Steve Jobs made Apple computer they have a better work place.

Yes indeed... my point was to highlight the work of a genius (Steve Jobs) in making a place which nurtures more creative geniuses... no offences.. !! ;-)

Shame they picked the name of a genomic data portal that boomed and bust in the space of about 3 years around the millennium.
Don't see the connection between what this software does and the name doubletwist.

This software seems to be using Perian for all media decoding/encoding (FFMPEG). Looks like DVD Jon did not get enough court cases in his life :)
I am curious to see how long it will take before all companies holding patents on the various media formats used by DoubleTwist go after his California based venture.
Additionally there's no mention to the free software project (Perian is LGPL) on their page, not nice...

After reading the EULA, I decided not to install this. It gives itself carte blanche on installing 3rd party applications.
No thanks!

oh oh oh! And guess what else? It's against the EULA to circumvent Doubletwist's DRM?
Get it? DVD Jon can circumvent all the DRM in the world, and doubletwist can circumvent iTunes DRM, but if you circumvent DVDJon's DRM then he'll shut you out!

uh, Sam, doubleTwist doesn't circumvent Apple DRM. You might consider using the application before commenting. Just saying....
sam said 5:53PM on 3-12-2009
Then how does it allow you to share your purchased iTunes music?
bob said 7:27PM on 3-13-2009
you can sync non drm muisic. anything you've imported into itunes from CD's you've burned or tunes you've paid the extra $.30 to be DRM free.
