Rumor: Upcoming iPhone parts list published
Once again, the folks at DigiTimes have leaked information about a forthcoming Apple product. Citing "Industry sources in Taiwan," they've published an alleged parts list for the next generation iPhone. Standout items include the 3.2-megapixel CMOS image sensor from OmniVision, which seems in line with the rumored video features in iPhone OS 3.0. Also listed is NAND flash from Samsung and Toshiba and Mobile DDR DRAM from Samsung.
Most interesing is what missing from the list. Namely, the processor. So far, there are no solid rumors on what this could be, so it's really anyone's guess. We think it's safe to say, however, that Apple will release new iPhones this summer. Those who purchased original phones two years ago will have their contracts expire in June, just around the time that iPhone OS 3.0 and WWDC will drop. Here's to this summer!
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

So why wouldn't all iphone users be able to upgrade, like last time?

Because the original iphone was not subsidized. So there was no reason for them not to. If they let 3g owners upgrade they would lose all the subsidized income from the remainder of those peoples 2 year contracts.

The first-gen iPhone WAS subsidized. Recall Ballmer laughing like an idiot saying how it's a $500 phone, fully subsidized.

I expect all 3G owners to get the discount. So long as they've had their 3G phone for 1yr.
edddeduck said 12:18PM on 4-15-2009
I think they will be able to depending on your country and contract. I would be amazed if O2 don't offer an upgrade option even if you have a small cost attached to it.
Offering new hardware for a longer contract after 12 months of an 18 month contract is standard in the UK and I think O2 would get a lot of bad publicity and lost customers if they decided to treat the iPhone differently to the other high end smart phones like the N95 etc
Nearly all providers in the UK offer these kinda deals to "keep loyalty" and nearly all phone deals in the UK have a subsidized phone cost. In fact the original iPhone was one of the only one's without a subsidized deal and got lots of flak for it.
That being said never say never :)

@ Chad,
Steve Ballmer really doesn't know what he is talking about. The original iPhone was NOT subsidized AT ALL and did not have an attached contract commitment like the 3G.
However, it will be interesting to see what happens with it all. Apple and ATT surely don't want to alienate 3G adopters.

Do they normally have a 'WCDMA' power amplifier? Forgive me if this is a dumb question...

I have held on to my 1st gen since the beginning. I'm super excited for this. My battery is at about 80% of it's original life now. But there is no point in paying apple $80 for a new battery when I get a new iPhone in a few months. This is going to be explosive, I can already tell. But yes, te above comment is right, AT&T will let any previous iPhone user upgrade to a new version of the iPhone nomatter when you started your contract. Because I have had the option to upgrade to a 3g since they came out, only a year into my original contract.

Your statement is only half correct. AT&T allowed iPhone users to get the discount pricing after only one year when the iPhone 3G came out because the iPhone was not subsidized. You paid full price for it. So while you had a data contract, you didn't have any restriction on handset upgrades. You could have switched to a blackberry and gotten the new customer pricing as well.
The bigger question is how AT&T is going to handle it this year. Most phones don't come out with significantly updated ones every year like Apple is doing with the iPhone. I can't imagine Apple & AT&T doing the "if you bought the 3G then you pay full price for the iPhone '09" route, as it would be a huge loyalty hit. But I can understand AT&T not wanting write off another $300 after only 12 months. That's the million dollar question I thinkl

i dont see how it would cause them an issue, as long as they add another 2 years to ur contract. i'm sure thats exactly what they'll do. of course this worries me, as by the time, the 6th generation iphone comes out, i'll have like a 6 year contract left with at&t LOL

@DJFriar
"Most phones don't come out with significantly updated ones every year like Apple is doing with the iPhone."
Nokia does exactly that with the N Series, sometimes it's multiple releases a year. Admitedly they have 3 different line of the N Series (N7x, N8x and N9x) but theres usually one of each a year. RIM do the same thing with Blackberry's. Whenever they can, they release new hardware take advantage of new technology.
Apple are doing the same thing. Don't like it? Don't upgrade. I've had my Nokia N80 for about 2 years now, and there must have been about 5 different N Series releases , yes I would like to have a newer phone, but unlike businessmen/women who either make so much they can upgrade at the drop of a hat, or have company phones which they can have upgraded easily. These people are the target audience for smartphones such as the iPhone or Blackberry's, and those are the only people that Apple really have to satisfy, there target audience. Consumers who buy iPhones are just extra sales for Apple.

So... CDMA = other carriers? I would love to have this with Alltel

WCDMA != CDMA
Jim C. said 12:44PM on 4-15-2009
WCDMA = UTMS = AT&T 3G
So, no... a WDCMA chip doesn't mean there's a CDMA (Verizon / Sprint / Alltel) version in the works. It just means that it'll support AT&T's 3G network.

Agreed - no need to even comment really, just move on to the next post. TUAW is always the first Apple/Tech site I go to in the morning and I don't care if they're a day late in churning the rumor mill. Have you just been refreshing TUAW for the past 30 hours waiting for this story to come through so you could make your (useless) point?
Besides, it's much better than a place like iphonealley which, from what I usually see, rips things almost verbatim from our friends here at TUAW and other sources.

Any chance the next iPhone could play back 720p video, and even better output it? I don't want to deal with two different resolutions for podcasts.
