T-Mobile supporting iPhone? Yep

It doesn't sell them. It doesn't promote them. Apparently, however, T-Mobile will support them. The Consumerist is reporting today that a recent change left iPhone users on the T-Mobile network without voicemail. Worse, when someone tried to call an iPhone on the T-Mobile network, the system sent a blank text message. Unless the iPhone user had an unlimited text account, those little messages were costing money.

Several customers contacted Executive Customer Support and got a phone call that acknowledged the problem, and gave the customers a 1 month service credit.

T-Mobile, through a representative, said "T-Mobile, though they do not offer the iPhone, (but) they are committed to supporting users on their network who have them."

True to their word, within a day or two the problem was fixed.

Wow. Just wow.

I'm moving to the States and want to get iphones for me and my husband and we want to go onto t-mobile...
1) Is there any point getting a 3G iphone if I'm using it on t-mobile? Should I just get a regular iphone?
2) What is "data" etc.
3) Can I use the iphone with "data" if I'm on t-mobile?
4) What do you think the best family (for 2 people) call plan would be if using the iphone (with data etc.).
Please tell me any of the pitfalls to watch out for.
thanks

Hi Guys. New to this, but was wondering if anyone can give me any insights about the iphone and T-Mobile. I recently got the first generation i phone, successfully unlocked it and i am now using the phone without any issues. However, my data plan is not working. i previously only had the Samsung katylst which can get internet (but i never uses it). I bought the data plan for $19.99 a month, however it is not working! From what everyone is saying it seems like i could call T-Mobile and ask for support while letting them know i have an iphone, but I’m a little hesitant about this as i feel it is illegal. Does anyone know why i might be experiencing this problem of not getting online?

As a T Mobile customer care representative, I can tell you that you DEFINITELY can call in and get support for the phone. From what you've described, you probably have the wrong web service, the one that works for the Samsung Katalyst is not the right one to work for a smart phone like the iPhone. (just ask for Smart Phone internet, they'll set you up)

also, the correct apn for the phone is internet2.voicestream.com

I've been with TMobile for over 10 years, and they're great. I would like to buy my wife a $99 iPhone for our anniversary in a couple of weeks. How can I get that "unlocking software" you talked about? And how much does Internet and email access cost a month?

Well,

There is a downside to all of this: they have now put in code on their network to detect the iPhone (or potentially non-TMobile smartphones) -- and they are now preventing these phones from using the $9.99 100MB Web plan.

They of course claim that the phone isn't compatible with the plan -- but they manage to do this by presenting you with a web page on the phone itself (and of course, the phones worked with these plans just fine until this week).

Its totally bogus that "slower" phones get 100MB of data for $9.99 -- and yet they force "faster" phones to use their $24.99 plan.

This would be like your ISP charging you for your connection based on how fast your computer ran....

And, this is an accurate comparison -- b/c connecting the iPhone to the $9.99 data plan meant using the older WAP network (completely by-passing the upgraded Edge/3G network). So -

Why can't I choose a slow connection with my fast device? Its just not worth the extra price (for my 1st gen iPhone, I can't take advantage of 3G -- why should I subsidize the network).

These guys get away with murder in my opinion....

I have the $9.99 Unlimited Data + Unlimited Text plan on my iPhone. When I called CS to have them switch my G1 data plan to the cheaper plan, they told me no. So I asked the rep to remove the data plan from my account, drove to a Starbucks, logged on to their hotspot, set my device as a cheap Nokia and I've been enjoying cheap, unlimited data ever since.

LOL its pay 34.99 to T Mobile to get a data plan with unlimited web and text, or pay AT&T $50 for the same. Sure, its a lot of money, but its already less then you'd pay the competition.

It's funny. We've got a business contract with AT&T only because we want the iPhone. When I mentioned to a T-Mobile rep a few months ago that this was why I was with AT&T, he was pretty quick to say that he could buy us out of our AT&T contract and support our iPhones - but he did concede that we would be stuck on EDGE, which really doesn't do great things for us, which is why we stuck with AT&T...the only reason!

T-Mobile is the reason why I don't own an iPhone. Better customer service and better price = my money at T-Mobile.

We called TMO a couple of weeks ago because the iPhone kept receiving a blank text message after listening to the voice messages. They transferred us to the "unsupported phones support team", and were extremely help. They said it was a known issue and apparently something keeps changing (I suspect it's the the "carrier updates" we constantly get from iTunes) which makes the iPhone having issues with their network.

Who knows... But an "unsupported phones support team"!? Sounds awesome to me.

I have a G1 and I have had mine since the launch date. I am awaiting the "cupcake" update and after trying it out I will be making some decisions about whether or not to get an Iphone. I have wanted an Iphone for awhile now but after making the switch from Sprint to T-mobile I am hesitant to switch to ATT for a phone. My customer service with T-mobile is great which is a big deal to me coming from Sprint. Sprint customer service was HORRIBLE. I had them for years and eventually switched cause I couldn't take the rotten C.S. anymore. T-mobile's network is not as strong for data (I'm still waiting on 3g in my primary area that was supposed to be here months ago) but is fine for calls. I would love to have 3g on a T-mobile Iphone but it looks like that isn't coming anytime soon. I guess after reading others comments here I will give an unlocked 2g Iphone a try because T-mobile's a keeper. I can't wait till Apple's exclusive contract with ATT is over.

Useless post. Anything surprising here? This obsession about anything has to do with iPhone is just too much.
