Adium 1.4 beta brings Twitter support and other goodies

Our favorite multi-service messaging client, Adium has issued two awesome updates. For OS X 10.4 Tiger users, or users who just want to use the most "stable" Adium release, the team has released Adium 1.3.4. This version boasts and updated core library and an updated Facebook chat plugin. The Adium blog states that this will likely be the last update for OS X 10.4 Tiger users.
If you're running OS X 10.5 Leopard and you want to get a taste of some new Adium features, the first beta of Adium 1.4 is also now available. The big news with Adium 1.4 is Twitter support! As Megan reported back in March, Twitter support is something the Adium team has been working hard at implementing for quite some time.
In addition to Twitter, Adium 1.4 also supports IRC, enhanced group messaging (independent styles and whatnot) and a slew of other improvements and enhancements. You can check out the whole list here.
I haven't really been able to try out the Twitter integration, because I think I follow too many people (Adium crashed after the 2000 or so Growl notifications went haywire), but it looks like a great way to at the very least integrate all of your messaging profiles in one place.
What are your thoughts on the new Adium beta?

Adium looks great, and works for multiple services, but until it can do everything iChat does: video, voice, and screen sharing, I'm sticking with iChat.

Sweet! Adium is easily the most used application I have, and adding twitter and IRC support is fantastic. I wouldn't mind if they got the video for AIM working, but I use that so rarely that switching to iChat for it isn't much of a hassle.

To make Twitter work properly, I've found that unchecking the "Show people I follow in contact list" prevents the 2000+ Growl notifications hence making Adium play nice with Twitter. Adium, is for "light tweeting" not to replace TweetDeck or other more robust Twitter dedicated apps.

I like it. As said, the Twitter integration is a bit much if you follow too many people, but it's pretty sweet if you're just trying to post a tweet quickly.
The IRC is probably the best new feature, especially with the addition of allowing different message styles between IMs and group chats.

I would rather use this than TweetDeck if it saves me some RAM. Also, no need to have 2 apps open anymore!

Can I add the same person over different mediums into one group and default to a particular medium?

Yes, you can merge the different contacts for the same person into one meta contact by command-dragging on contact onto the other. Then you can reorder the contacts within a given meta contact.

The site is getting slammed for Adium 1.4.
Took several tries but the site showed up (minus any images - css styling only). Looking forward to testing it out.

How exactly is Twitter supposed to work in Adium? OK, so I can get a list of the people I follow, but where do I see their tweets?

Tweets show up in a single group chat window named "Timeline." Each tweet is followed by icons to reply, star or link. So far, it seems to work just fine and will replace my other Twitter clients.

Mine keeps crashing every time I try and log in to AIM. Anyone else seeing this, too?
@freshyill Tweets showed up as away messages on my list, so maybe see if away messages are visible in your buddy list.

Oh Adium. Every time I try to use you, you give me nothing but grief with Direct Messages & file transfers. And it's been *years.*

Sad to see that Tiger is being discontinued... I do not plan on installing Leopard on my G5 anytime soon and I still use it daily even though I have my MBP.

While I too await video and better file transfer (the team has explained why on its blog), I'm thrilled to have it handle more and more of my online chattering needs.
As to Kevin's worry, I ran Leopard on several G4s and had nothing but joy, once I maxed out the machines' RAM (which, these days, is dirt cheap).
Survive and suceed, Adium!

I've played with Twitter integration in Adium 1.4 beta 1 and I've put some initial thoughts about it in my blog at: http://codepuccino.com/metacosm/2009/05/19/first-adium-twitter-integration-thoughts-in-14-beta-1/

Hey remember two years ago when they had examples of video working? That sure was sweet. http://digg.com/apple/Adium_2_0_Coming_With_video_audio_support
I mean come on, the video support ticket has been open for 4 years or so.
