Some Macbook Pros are updated along with iWork '09

Apple pushed out a couple of software updates late this afternoon. One is for regulating the fan speed under heavy loads on older MacBook Pro laptops.

The other is a more general 42.7 MB update for iWork '09. This is the second software revision for the word processing, spreadsheet and presentation package. The update says it improves reliability when saving some iWork documents. It also fixes some issues when Keynote sessions are played back multiple times.

Update: Users of Apple's pro video editing, photo and audio apps will also see the ProKit Update v4.5, which "improves reliability for Apple's professional applications and is recommended for all users of Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Express, Aperture, Logic Studio and Logic Express."

Your software update option under the Apple menu should get you one or all updates. The MacBook Pro update is a firmware update, and it will start up automatically after a download. If you don't see this update, your laptop doesn't require it.

Here are the included update instructions:

To update the SMC firmware on your MacBook Pro:

Your computer's power cord must be connected and plugged into a working power source.

1. Quit all other open applications.

2. Click Restart in the MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update window and wait for your computer to restart.

The SMC firmware update starts automatically. A status bar indicates the progress of the update. During the update your computer fans will run at full speed, but will return to normal once the update completes.

Important: Do not interrupt the update.

Your computer restarts automatically when the update is completed and opens the MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update.

3. Click OK. The SMC firmware is now up-to-date.

If these instructions appear on your screen again, the SMC firmware update was not successful. Repeat steps 2 and 3.

Thanks to Matt for the MacBook Pro tip!

I have a late 2008 MBP Glossy! Software update showed smc firmware.

istat pro shows temps before update were.......during basic web browsing, low res Hulu in small window.

60 degrees cpu, 64 cpu diode. Fans were always at 1999/2005 rpms. Except when training America's Army, then they were up to 4500 rpms

After smc update...

59 degreees, 60 cpu diode, fans still at same range, however they seem to go up too 3000-3500 if watching full screen video lo/hi res on Hulu.

But, even though the cpu is a degree cooler theoretically, and the fans are spinning faster when needed, the case and keyboard are HOTTER TO THE TOUCH, much more uncomfortable to use now.

I'm thinking about doing a clean install, and software update all again EXCEPT the newest smc firmware. Any thoughts?

Since applying this SMC update, my cpu is reaching crazy temperatures. While importing some avchd in iMovie my processor high an all time high of 91*c.
I'd much prefer noisier fans and cooler cpu. Maybe this is apple's way of making me buy a new computer.. burn out my cpu.

I have a 1st gen 17" Core Duo MBP with ATI 1600 and the fan regulation is so poor that when converting video or rendering 3D (CPU load near full) iStat Pro would report the CPU temp at over 90 C. Sometimes it would overheat and reboot.

I took it in for warranty service and all the Apple Store people could do was replace the fan, which didn't solve anything. So I installed Fan Control in my System Preferences and set up the fan speeds myself, and now it runs perfectly. I think Apple must have biased the default settings for quiet operation, but they screwed up - these MBP's obviously need to apply the fan more liberally.

The current firmware update is not available on my MBP. I'm very glad Apple's on top of this.

The firmware killed my June 2007 MBP. It downloaded ok and asked to Restart. Then after restart I only get a black screen. I reset PRAM, removed the battery and reset SMC, changed the harddrive - nothing, not even the white screen or a bong. It is now sitting at the Apple Store awaiting a new motherboard.

Not to deter anyone... I just thought I'd mention that this unfortunate event happened to me.

Same thing happened to me after a previous OS upgrade. There are plenty of threads about it on the Apple site. Good news is they should replace the card for free even if out of warranty.

Late 2007 MBP. The firmware update appeared for me, but after downloading, it didn't auto start up as the instructions said it would.

Went into the Utilities folder to do it manually. Update went fine. After restarting, the app didn't confirm that it was successful like the instructions said it would.

In System Profiler before the update: SMC Version (System) was 1.16f8.
After the updateL 1.16f11.

Early '08 MBP. Firmware update installed by download. All seemed fine until re-boot resulted in vanishing Airport card. (not listed in hardware & not working via screen controls). 'Net check showed others with same problem, tho not related to recent firmware update. Airport reappeared after restart with OSX disk in CD slot. No re-install initiated.

the new SMC Firmware Update 1.3 does NOT fix the sleep issues caused by 10.5.7 (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2005687).
