Net Applications numbers show growth for Mac browsers
If you're looking for a bright spot in the Mac market share numbers after the recent dips, Net Applications has your back. The May survey indicates an uptick in Safari's share of browser usage -- up to 8.43% from 8.21% in April, and 2% higher than a year earlier. Firefox continues to be the big 2nd banana to leading browser choice IE, with a 22.5% share. It's not yet clear how the IE8 release will drive browser adoption.Operating system numbers (which aren't definitive, but provide a reasonable indicator of usage) also show a slight rise for Mac OS X (9.81% from 9.73%), also more than 2% over the year-ago allocation.
On the mobile side, the survey company notes that Android browsing usage started out with the same adoption curve as the iPhone/iPod touch, but has since fallen off that pace. Coverage of the Palm Pre starts soon.

This is not surprising since I'm currently using an HP Mini 2140 with Windows 7, and Safari as the browser. It seriously is the best browser for windows, and I feel it looks and runs better on my HP mini with the intel atom 270 and 1 GB of ram running windows 7, then it does on my 4 core 2.66ghz mac pro with 7 GB of ram and OS 10.5.7.
On a side note I'm holding out that Snow Leopard will bring with it some improvements.
Safari is pretty quick and is my preferred browser. I'm also excited about the upcoming geolocation features in Safari for iPhone http://www.tuaw.com/2009/06/01/safari-browser-3-0-for-iphone-is-gps-aware/ , but I don't think Safari will ever take 2nd or 1st place until Apple builds up a developer community a la Mozilla (plugins, extensions, themes, etc.) AND seamlessly integrates iPhone Safari use to Mac Safari use. My personal website isn't especially different from other blogs concerned with politics, technology, topics requiring more thought than beancounters allow for.
Even mid-day, 12+% safari browser share, 20+% OS X share. These numbers go up significantly when the evening logins from the U.S. land.
It totally shouldn't be too hard for them to analyze usage by time of day. I wonder if they make their data sets available to the public...
