File under "This won't last": new white MacBook benchmarks faster than unibody model

In a thorough review of the new speed-bumped white MacBook, Macworld notes an intriguing fact: the 2.13GHz model of the $999 entry-level laptop actually outperforms the base unibody model. The magazine's benchmarks show a 4 percent advantage for the new white MacBook over the $1299 2GHz aluminum laptop; the white model even outlasts the next-generation machine on battery life by more than 30 minutes.

Unless you absolutely have to have the new industrial design on your laptop and you're willing to pay an extra $300 for the privilege, it does seem that the new white model is the better buy... for now. A performance gap like this is a strong hint that the unibody models are due for a processor bump sometime soon, if only to restore the proper order of things: faster should equal more expensive. Right?

And what about the problems with the white MB 's enclosure? All of my friends that have this white model experience that the body cracks where it touches the top of the screen in closed state. ??

Oh, and the environment stuff as well. I'm no greenie but besides what I mentioned above, and the cost difference of refurbished, and not wanting to own a white plastic MacBook for another few years... I think this 2.13ghz is great value for first time Mac users but, if you can afford it, a little more for a refurbished MacBook Alu 2.0ghz is well worth the money. 5% less CPU speed is nothing much compared to faster GPU, etc. etc.

I got a refurbished Macbook Alu 2.0ghz at 15% or so off the usual retail price.

Why I went Aluminium:

I was tired of "babying" my previous White MacBook Core Duo. Cleaning, protecting, possible cracking. LED Backlight: a world of difference. Absolutely incredible industrial design: good resale value, solid feel, pure Mac experience without worrying about this or that "physical" quirks like the white plastic stuff. Multitouch trackpad. DDR3 RAM makes a difference for graphics which was important for me (see Macworld GPU benchmarks). 9400M using DDR3 RAM (because it's shared) is faster than 9400M using DDR2 RAM.

@Brisbane, Australia peoples: Go to the Robina Apple Store, or call AppleCare toll free. Them cracking is well known issue and should be covered globally, especially if you still have AppleCare on your MacBook. All the best.

If it were black, I'd be all over it. In any case, this model is absolutely the best deal ever on a Mac laptop.

Tuaw has been a little slow lately with posting stories. The first day I read this I came here to find nothing... Maybe they need more writers or something?

anyway; I have good feeling that Apple is going to refresh the unibody macbooks at WWDC, which is fast approaching.

Again, when I switched, the only hard-sell I got was buying the unibody. If updating the white MacBook was done primarily for education sales and the truly frugal, then I see why it continues to soldier on.

I feel unaffected by this upgrade and am satisfied with what I purchased. Notebooks get updated all the time, I guess it's because Apple has a smaller product line (vs. say HP) that it seems to effect the end-customer more.

This is not uncommon with Apple releases. And it was far worse when they did the first intel switch with some PPC and some intel CPUs. When you had a mac mini available one day with a G4 1.5 MAX cpu speed, and then the next day they have the core Duo intel available you wonder what the hell happened to your money

Why is it surprising that a 2.13Ghz processor is faster than a 2.0Ghz processor?

I'd happily pay the extra $300 for the much sturdier construction... the aluminum frame alone would probably last me another years worth of computing compared to the polycarbonate ones.
