Mac laptop glossy screens hazardous to your posture?
Well, we're still not sure our iPhones are safe to use, and now comes word from Australia that our brand spanking new glossy screens might be hurting us as well, through bad ergonomics. An HR advisory from Queensland University of Technology suggests that:
"Reflections and glare on high gloss monitor screens and their relation to the angle of the monitor screen, could cause the operator to adopt awkward postures when viewing the monitor screen and using related equipment. These reflections on the screen can be from internal and external sources such as the overhead lighting and/or position of windows.
Awkward postures adopted by the operator may in turn lead to an injury."
Of course Apple has moved to high gloss screens on every laptop except the 17" MacBook Pro, and the matte screen option on that laptop costs an extra fifty bucks. The iMacs are also only available with glossy screens.
Of course there are other health hazards associated with having Apple equipment, such as a tendency to have panic attacks or heart palpitations when you learn you can't update your iPhone cheaply through AT&T. At any rate, there is one advantage to those glossy screens. You'll be able to clearly see your pained face as you try to stretch into position to avoid those reflections on those mirror-like screens. So there.

i've got a 15" glossy laptop next to a 23" matte cinema display. colour consistency is surprisingly decent across the two after calibration, and both are crappy to look at when there is bright light coming in the window.
i'm sure there are people for whom the difference is more pronounced; so by all mean, go ahead and lobby for the matte option to be brought back. just don't bother telling me my little laptop's screen it is categorical shit. its not going to hurt my feelings, but it may cause me eye strain from all the rolling my eyes will be doing. :P
glossy screens=unprofessional.
I dont know a single Professional Designer or photographer, or anyone working with color sensitive material that would prefer a gloss screen.
Apple, seeing lots of consumer customers, has left us professionals in the dust.
sad.
"If you find this minute thing to prevent you from buying a mac, you weren't really interested in a mac."
Trolling, are we? Well, it worked.
The screen - the final step in enjoying the computer (like speakers in a high end sound system) is hardly a 'minute' detail.
I haven't purchased a new MacBook Pro yet, but here's an option I've been looking at for the glossy screen made by RadTech.

I've had good luck with some of their products over the years (all my laptops have the Screesavrz, which also function as a wipe for the screen.) There is even a video on the site on how to install the filter. Doesn't look that difficult.
This won't fix the glare problem, but here's a solution to having the screen at a better eye level. Try the Griffin iCurve which elevates the laptop about seven inches. Here's a link:

With the iCurve, you will also want to buy an external keyboard.
you have to remember Apple wants to cut cost as much as possible. majority bought gloss screens so they moved out of selling matte screens. There are plenty of third party products to buy (cheaper than apple) to reduce the the gloss. If you find this minute thing to prevent you from buying a mac, you weren't really interested in a mac.

June 15 2009 at 8:53 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI was in the market for a new iMac, but over a year ago I jumped at the chance to buy a new (yes, new, with warranty) late 2006 matte iMac 24" when my local store was selling off their old inventory.
Glossy screens are simply horrible. I have a very bright and sunny home and write for a living. I checked out the newer iMacs but glossy is *the* worst design decision ever. I can't go squinting (headaches!) or draw the curtains to use an effing computer.
If the times comes to replace this iMac (which will not be for a long, long time), I will probably go for a mini (if they're still around) or a Mac Pro (money permitting) with a separate large matte screen.
Let's hope this fad will have passed by then.
I have a 17" macbook pro with a matt screen. I noticed that the picture is not as sharp as on the new macbook that my husband is considering.
I will suggest that he buy a polarizing filter.
We had not thought of that. I wonder if it will reduce the sharpness of the picture.
Another reason to support our effort to bring back the matt screen option:
