Apple releases 3.1 beta for iPhone SDK

Apple has released a 3.1 beta for the iPhone SDK. Both the SDK beta and firmware are available for testing and development to paid members of the iPhone developer program. As pre-release software, any details about this new release remain under NDA.

A pre-installation advisory and beta release notes are available as per Apple's usual release strategy. As before, you cannot use the 3.1 SDK to create applications for submitting to the App Store, so if you plan to download it be prepared to create a separate installation directory.

The new release comes just on the heels of the public 3.0 firmware. Its full-dot-number indicates that it contains more than just minor bug fixes (a relatively minor revision would probably be listed as 3.0.1).

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

considering that the pre and new nokia have flash, and a majority of websites still use flash for videos, i think flash would be a natural progression. Unless you like only being able to watch youtube videos, which i dont. Waiting for 90% of websites to start using new code for videos would be just as bad as waiting for the iphone to support flash. I think flash will come before all websites support that, although it will probably only be on the 3gs.

3.1 has broken the ability to download a full audiobook to the iPhone. It now loads a single random chapter from each audiobook.

Here's hoping they fix the iTunes AOL account issue in 3.1!

I have 3.0 with updated carrier settings which allow me to use tethering and has MMS activated. I get the little camera button and it begins to send the picture and then gives the error you guys spoke about earlier. I have been having a few errors with 3.0 in fact my iPhone now skips when I get a text message or e-mail which has been driving me crazy. I'm still on a 3G with the slower speed so I am hoping 3.1 will address this.

Tethering works fantastically and now that I've actually gotten to use it I would probably pay a decent amount extra for the service. Although I hope I don't have to.

I am sure flash is coming, but I'm sure it won't just be a software upgrade, they'll release a new iPhone for that.

I don't think it will ever come to the iphone. Too many games in the app store could easily be replicated on Flash for free, and we wouldn't want to have that now, would we?

Funny MMS works fine for me on O2 in the UK... AND I'm sure it works well in all the other countries that got MMS in OS 3.0.

I'm sure MMS on AT&T will coincide with the launch of 3.1 but I doubt it will have anything to do with the firmware release.

My iPhone has had strange signal dropout problems and frequently loses signal altogether in my cubicle at work where I used to get a consistent 2-3 bars.

Also I've noticed that screen lock sounds sometimes get a little "8-bit" at times and my dock that came with the iphone has been telling me lately that the accessory was not made to work with the iphone and prompts me to put it in airplane mode.

All since upgrading to 3.0!

I used to consistently get five bars in my office (I used to brag about it to my family members using T-Mobile), but now I'll turn the iPhone on and typically only see two or three. Every now and then it will shoot back up to five bars again, but it isn't solid like it used to be. The really peculiar thing is that I've been running OS 3.0 since beta 1, but I'm just recently starting to see this problem.

Also, I kept getting that accessory not made for iPhone prompt every time I plugged my iPhone into the USB cable that came with my iPhone Bluetooth headset. I finally got fed up with the error message and not getting any sound out of the phone when it was plugged in and unplugged everything. Just for kicks, I connected it all back up and I haven't had the problem since then. :D

3.0 bricked my iPhone (non-jailbreak, original firmware) so maybe I'll have it back from repairs just in time to brick it with 3.1!

Seriously though... I am not surprised a major update is around the corner so quickly. :(

I third hope for Flash NEVER coming to the iPhone -- there is absolutely no need for it, particularly with what HTML 5 is bringing to the table.
