iPhone 3GS users report slow or inconsistent Wi-Fi connections

A number of iPhone 3GS owners have reported slow and inconsistent data speeds, along with widely varying amounts of signal strength, when using Wi-Fi.

Users note that signal strength can fluctuate between one and full bars even when standing right next to the router or when a computer nearby shows a constant signal. This goes along with a commensurate reduction in speed. Even at full signal on both the computer and the 3GS, one user reports getting a maximum of 3Mbit downloads on the iPhone while getting nearly 7Mbit downloads on a MacBook using the O2 network. The fluctuating signal strength problem has affected me since I brought home my new iPhone 3GS.

The other, more widely reported problem is a sizable speed decrease in the iPhone 3GS as compared to the iPod touch and iPhone 3G tested under the same conditions. In one case an iPod touch garnered download speeds of 4579ms and uploads of 1363ms, while the iPhone 3GS showed only 1360ms down and 160ms up.
Both problems seem to be more acute using an Airport Extreme/Time Capsule network than a third party solution. For one user, running the same speed test, a Netgear router provided twice the transfer speed and half the latency of an Airport Extreme.

Apple has addressed some user complaints with replacement units. This, however, hasn't solved the problem, even after one person replaced his phone three times. A non-verifiable source has suggested that this has not been corrected in the beta builds of the upcoming 3.1 software.

Most widely reported is the difference in transfer speeds between the 3G and the 3GS.

Michael Krasner has been following this and uploading movies documenting the differences. In his video he is using AT&T DSL in Florida and his Airport Extreme's radio mode is set to 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) with two Airport Express' extending his network.

Have any of you new iPhone3GS owners been experiencing this?

I updated to O4 last night... all looked fine at first. However I listen to streaming radio across a wifi access every day, and guess what - yep - today that doesn't work...I am less than a foot away from the wifi box (which hasn't changed) and I have intermittent and loss of signal - to the point that I am now about to restore to the old os...bad news Apple...badly tested...

:-(

We're definitely seeing an issue with the 3GS performing much worse than the 3G on our 802.11g network. Various network operations take 8 to 30 seconds for the 3GS, instead of under a second for the 3G.

I have a D-Link DI-524 router and have finally fixed the connection to my iphone 3GS. I went into my router settings and turned off wireless security. On my iphone I went to my wireless network settings and picked "Forget this Network". I then selected my network again and confirmed that a browsing connection was available. Once confirmed I went back into my router settings and turned WPA-TSK back on and set a password. The phone then asked for this password which I entered and it has all been good since.

Slower download speeds on WiFi (Airport Extreme) than 3G. :(
Uploads are 2x as fast on the WiFi (~300kbps) than 3G

I upgraded to the 3G S and I noticed a lot slower buffering on the YouTube videos compaired to the 3G. Like I had to wait 10 minuets just to make the videos play the whole way thru... I really hope that the 3.1 update fixes this

That's because your MacBook Pro uses Wireless N network, which is considerably stronger than the Wireless B/G network that the iPhone utilizes.

I was having poor performance on my iPhone 3GS (purchased 2 days ago) as compared to my 1st generation iPod touch. Latency was about double and download speeds 1/2 that of the touch. Now, tonight, I cannot see my wifi network (Airport Extreme) nor my neighbors (Netgear) while the touch sees them just fine.

I have to restart my 3Gs to get my home network back up to speed after a few sessions of use. when laggy it wont connect to the internet even though its showing 1-2 bars while sat next to the router. turning off and on seems to be a tempory fix only.Back on now full bars and quick browsing, wonder how long before i need to turn off the phone?

Final update - on research the Netgear site has a point release (1.0.4.2) to the WNR834Bv1 router. After applying this point release the iPhone3Gs appears to work just fine.

Of the six items in the release notes the only one that appears to apply is the following cryptic notation...

1.Removed SIP ALG.

All other mentioned fixes have to do with the interface.

So the lesson here is - it may not be the newest device in the network - it could be something else that is not compatible with the newest device. For those experiencing problems with WiFi and 3Gs take a moment and be sure that you access point is running the latest firmware from your manufacturer. No guaranteed results - but it worked for me.
