Safari 4.0.2 released
Fire up Software Update, Apple just released Safari 4.0.2!
As usual, the release notes are extremely informative (laugh), stating:
This update is recommended for all Safari users and improves the stability of the Nitro JavaScript engine and includes the latest compatibility and security fixes.
Looking a the actual security announcement, this is is one update you're going to want to install. One of the security fixes addresses potential cross-site scripting attacks, via WebKit's handling of parent and top objects. The other fix addresses memory allocation for numeric character references, which if exploited, could allow arbitrary code execution or application termination after visiting a malicious site.
These issues affect Mac OS X and Windows XP and Vista, so everyone, download your Safari updates!
As usual, you will have to restart your computer after installation.

Holy crap, yeah, more stability. I have never experienced such crap from Apple as Safari 4. I couldn't browse for more than a few minutes before the shit crashed.

I really really really hate that you need to reboot after installing safari/quicktime updates. It just makes me feel i'm using Windows all over again :(

I get QuickTime needing to restart, the whole OS relies on it, it can't change without restarting. But Safari? Anyone know the explanation?

A Safari update is usually also a WebKit update. Any Mac OS X application could potentially use WebKit. Off the top of my head: Finder, iChat, Mail and TextEdit all use WebKit. That's just the top four.
By the time you detect every application using WebKit and quit it for every logged in user, you might as well just restart.

I agree with Josh re rebooting. It's absolutely possible to patch Solaris & other *NIX systems without rebooting. Why would it be necessary to reboot after updating a mere application?

You have to do a reboot in OS X after any update that has Kernel-level access.
I believe that WebKit, upon which Safari is based, is a .kext (Kernel Extension).
Therefore, this update is far more than just for "An application".
And oh, by the way, there are some updates that even require a reboot of Linux and Unix. (And yes, I know about ksplice).
But ya know, I don't see what the big deal is about rebooting. Afterall, thanks primarily to Apple's incredible launchd, OS X probably has the fastest boot times of any modern OS.
But you will NEVER see OS X require reboot-after-reboot like Windows...

Seriously, what sort of info are you really looking for in the release notes? Fixed but on line 17423 of Main.m where we screwed up in the following ways...

Slashdot no longer has the little relationship bubbles spilling all over the place in comment threads.

I was hoping the fix would properly render the new google calendar widget now available for GMail.
No such luck.

There was a bug with Safari 4 that was causing Safari to crash on the Apple Store when LazyMouse or some other programs (including Apple's VoiceOver) were running.
This latest version fixes that bug.

It would be nice if they fixed the issue they are having with web pages loading VERY SLOWLY. This page took 16 seconds to load.

Can someone check if the search bar in the apple forums (discussions.apple.com) is shown improperly like on this screenshot?

All of you are a bunch of ineXperienced Mac Users. Gimme, gimme, gimme. You should be grateful that, we aren't eXperiencing Microsoft's woes at the moment. Now I see where the weak LINKS are.
P.S.
I've been a devoted to Apple since I first got my Performa 6200, OS 7.5.1. I've dabbled a bit with other Macs, + newer software for Macs. Thru the years I've never had to work so hard on the Mac platform like I do with Windows.
God bless & all a good niter.
