7200RPM drives trouble some MacBook Pro owners with mystery beeps

I've had this same problem for the past few weeks with my 15'' MBP. I'm thinking of taking it in to Apple when I get back from vacation because I paid over 2 grand for this computer, I don't want any malfunctioning parts in it straight out of the box. They'd better replace it for me.

I thought I was hearing things. I don't get the clicking, but every once in a while - not often to be alarming or consistent in any way - I hear this soft beep. It doesn't seem to impact performance, but it's definitely disconcerting.

It is amazing that officially, Apple is not acknowledging this issue... the chances of you getting replaced is 50/50. The thread at Apple's discussion forums is now at a ridiculously long 62+ pages and counting.

So much for Apple's reliability....

And yes, I am one of the affected ones.

Video for this article was my 1st MBP. 2nd MBP has big freeze issues along with click beeps, and guess what? Replacement of the replacement has click beep as well. It's been 5 weeks worth of hassle, with machines I can't rely on. Moving machine to machine is a pain, on top of sorting courier deliveries, returns, and Genus bar trips to have to plead a case.
As was once said - "We are not amused".

Went through three Seagate drives (under warranty) in a Compaq (never again) and finally bought a competitor's drive when the last one cratered and the warranty was out. No problems since.

That beep was always the warning sign that I'd better back 'er up and get out the 1-800 number. The last time it died mid-backup.

Ordered the Macbook Pro on July 6th (2.8Ghz, 4GB RAM, 500GB-7200RPM), opened it two hours ago, and have the same click and beep as on in the video.

Ok, I find this weird. I own a 2nd generation Mac mini (bought in Feb '08), and only this year I have actually heard the same click-beep noise at least once. Since I have last heard it, I haven't heard it again, which was probably in March '09. It was late at night, and all of a sudden, I hear the noise...it was quiet, but it was audiable (spelled wrong). My Mac has had no major hiccups since.

Edit: I have found that my Mac does not have a 7200rpm drive, it is a 5400rpm. But, oh well, it hasn't caused me a problem, the click-beep.

+ 1 for the beeping issue. System also stalls for a sec when the beep occurs.

I have a ~three year old MBP with that same hard drive and problem. I remember when it failed. It started beeping in 2 second intervals and the Hard Drive stop spinning (i think) therefore making it useless. I thought that it was an isolated problem but i see that everyone is having the same issue with the Momentus 7200.4 .

This issue is not only present in new MBP , this also occurs in the older MBP with motion sensors (like mine).

I originally purchased the Hard Drive from Dell and they are kind enough to replace it when it comes in stock. I Just need to get my data from the dead drive. Does anyone have any solutions?

Yep, I'm having the same problem. I called AppleCare and am getting the hard drive replaced, but I'm betting that the same problem will occur, unless it's really only a specific batch of drives that is affected. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
