First Look: Memeo Send with special deal for TUAW readers
Do you need to send large files to clients or friends? Sending those big files through email can be a problem, since sometimes the receiver's ISP limits the size of files that can be received. It's slow and expensive to send files on external hard drives, USB flash drives, or DVDs through express mail shipping methods. If you've ever tried to explain the simplicity of FTP to someone who is less than computer-savvy, sending huge files through FTP becomes a problem.Enter Memeo Send, which was announced today. The application is free to download (you can also send or receive files from a web browser) and with your free download you are given the opportunity to set up 3 file deliveries. At the end of that time, you can purchase extra deliveries for about US$1 each. If you don't need to send files very often, you won't pay much -- Memeo Send is strictly pay-as-you-go.
Read on for more information, including a special offer to the first 400 TUAW readers who use Memeo Send.
I had a chance to test the application and service, and it works very well. After a fast download and installation, you can use Memeo Send to create a free account. Once the account email has been validated, you can drag and drop packages of files to send to recipients. Using an encrypted connection, the files are uploaded to Memeo's servers.

The upload wasn't exactly speedy, probably limited by the maximum upload speed for my cable modem connection and the fact that the file being sent was already compressed data. I started the upload and went to bed -- I wasn't about to wait for seven hours or so for the file to be uploaded. In the screenshot below, you can also see that the Delivery Status bar shows that the recipient had already been notified. That's a slight bug, since the notification email wasn't actually sent until 4:27 AM (7 hours, 35 minutes later) when the file transfer was completed.

I had some problems receiving the download file. First, although my "recipient" email address was in the system, I had never entered a password, so I needed to do a password reset. This would be very confusing to a novice user. Second, after logging in with the Memeo Send client software, the receive page (see below) noted that the "download was resuming" but it never actually started. After starting the Memeo Send client software two more times, the download finally began. Downloads were much faster (it took about 45 minutes for the 2.7 GB file), which is what I'd expect given the difference in maximum upload and download speeds on my cable modem service.

Special Deal!
We love giving away stuff to TUAW readers, and Memeo has provided a wonderful offer. To the first 400 readers who use Memeo Send to go beyond the built-in 3 delivery credit limit, Memeo has provided 50 free delivery credits (value of US$49.50). Taking advantage of this deal is simple; when you've used more than your free 3 delivery credits, Memeo Send will ask you to buy more. Enter the coupon code TUAWSEND in the proper area when you're buying those credits, and you'll be charged absolutely nothing for the next 50 delivery credits.
What's your favorite way of easily sending large files to clients or friends? Be sure to leave a comment below if you use some other method to do those pesky file transfers, and be sure to let us know how you like Memeo Send if you give it a try.

this sounds like something worth trying for the remote workers in my office. i haven't been able to get the COO to give the greenlight on anything else, so this should be worth a shot.

Epic FAIL on memeo's part. They've linked to the PC version of their software.
The Mac version can be found by clicking the "mac" tab above, and searching for memeo send.

Interesting idea but I'll stick to FileChute and MobileMe.

Coupon does not work.
"The coupon entered is not valid for use in this eSeller. You may try another coupon, or proceed without entering a coupon."

Just a quick note from Memeo. You mentioned a slight bug existed because the receiver was notified before the file had uploaded. Actually this should be true. We splice files so that recievers can begin to download while the sender is still uplioading.

I use http://yousendit.com which has standalone app, plugins for browsers and email apps and option to just download or upload from website itself. Also offers different price plans and security options. Don't see that Memel does anything better?

Seriously? $1 for a service you get for free on every corner of the internet?
Let's call it a tax on an exteme lamerness, then it's ok and should be even increased.

Yousendit is great. Besides multiple upload options (and free uploads up to 1gig) they also have a handy iPhone app to see the status of your uploaded files on the go.

Aside from the mac link going to the PC download, I found this very slick and easy to use. (Do people really not know their email password?)
But when I finished my three downloads, clicked on the buy more link and entered the code, I received the following message: "The coupon entered is subject to order requirements that were not met. You may try another coupon, or proceed without entering a coupon."
According to cnet I was the first person to download the software, and I finished the uploads a half hour later so it's hard to believe 400 people beat me to the punch, so I don't really know what to make of it. Has anyone been able to use the code?
Aside from that, it looks like a great product that I can easily see myself using on a daily basis.

Still getting the same message. I'm clicking the buy more icon from the desktop client which brings me to the purchase a ten pack page. Should I be doing something else?
I use both DropBox and have a MobileMe account but I still find that some people are uncomfortable using anything that requires them to stray from email. I think this might bridge the gap better than any solution I've seen so far. It's not for everybody but for professionals who send a lot of files to clients without a lot of computer savvy on a regular basis, this might be just the ticket.

This coupon DID work for me, after a couple tries. Use up all your credits until you're at 0, and then go into Preferences and click Buy credits. A browser window should come up with an online shop. Add the 10 credit pack to your cart, and set the quantity to 5. Then add in the coupon code. It might not work the first try.

Memeo Here. It seems that the coupon code works most of the time, but not always. We are trying one more fix for reliability. Thanks for your patience.

Something I couldn't find out on their website; do you need Memeo Send to receive files as well?
If so, I don't think all our clients are willing to install a program just to receive files... at least not while things like Yousendit and Megaupload are available to everyone without installing a thing for the receiving end.

you can either use memeosend or a browser to download files you receive
roberrt said 10:51AM on 8-12-2009
No you don't need Memeo Send to receive. Web browser or desktop client. I guess we need to highlight that better. =)
Coupon issues are resolved. If anymore issues, just ping me (my address is above)
