First Look: Memeo Send with special deal for TUAW readers
Do you need to send large files to clients or friends? Sending those big files through email can be a problem, since sometimes the receiver's ISP limits the size of files that can be received. It's slow and expensive to send files on external hard drives, USB flash drives, or DVDs through express mail shipping methods. If you've ever tried to explain the simplicity of FTP to someone who is less than computer-savvy, sending huge files through FTP becomes a problem.Enter Memeo Send, which was announced today. The application is free to download (you can also send or receive files from a web browser) and with your free download you are given the opportunity to set up 3 file deliveries. At the end of that time, you can purchase extra deliveries for about US$1 each. If you don't need to send files very often, you won't pay much -- Memeo Send is strictly pay-as-you-go.
Read on for more information, including a special offer to the first 400 TUAW readers who use Memeo Send.
I had a chance to test the application and service, and it works very well. After a fast download and installation, you can use Memeo Send to create a free account. Once the account email has been validated, you can drag and drop packages of files to send to recipients. Using an encrypted connection, the files are uploaded to Memeo's servers.

The upload wasn't exactly speedy, probably limited by the maximum upload speed for my cable modem connection and the fact that the file being sent was already compressed data. I started the upload and went to bed -- I wasn't about to wait for seven hours or so for the file to be uploaded. In the screenshot below, you can also see that the Delivery Status bar shows that the recipient had already been notified. That's a slight bug, since the notification email wasn't actually sent until 4:27 AM (7 hours, 35 minutes later) when the file transfer was completed.

I had some problems receiving the download file. First, although my "recipient" email address was in the system, I had never entered a password, so I needed to do a password reset. This would be very confusing to a novice user. Second, after logging in with the Memeo Send client software, the receive page (see below) noted that the "download was resuming" but it never actually started. After starting the Memeo Send client software two more times, the download finally began. Downloads were much faster (it took about 45 minutes for the 2.7 GB file), which is what I'd expect given the difference in maximum upload and download speeds on my cable modem service.

Special Deal!
We love giving away stuff to TUAW readers, and Memeo has provided a wonderful offer. To the first 400 readers who use Memeo Send to go beyond the built-in 3 delivery credit limit, Memeo has provided 50 free delivery credits (value of US$49.50). Taking advantage of this deal is simple; when you've used more than your free 3 delivery credits, Memeo Send will ask you to buy more. Enter the coupon code TUAWSEND in the proper area when you're buying those credits, and you'll be charged absolutely nothing for the next 50 delivery credits.

Memeo in spanish means "i Pee myself"
This might be a great service. Really.
Regarding an issue with less tech-savvy people, I tried to send my friend an MP3 file using Dropbox's public folder. He clicked the link to the MP3 file. Then QuickTime happily opened in the browser to play the file.
He didn't know how to save the file.
He was like, "I see a thin silver bar with a little triangle button on it. What should I do?"
I was, "You're running Firefox, right? Try right-clicking."
He: "The 'Save' thing is grayed out" (non-pro QuickTime)
I: "Try the File menu. You should see something called 'Save' there"
He: "What Save? Tell me the exact name. I don't know what Save to click!"
........
This went on and on until I booted Windows in Parallels and told him what the name of the menu was.
So I'm looking forward to seeing Memeo in action ;-)
I have to say, I find using the File Transfer feature of Skype to be both convenience and fast for transferring last files between myself and other people I know (even multi-gigabyte files). Just start a chat, select transfer file, other side accepts it, and you just walk away. It even does auto-resuming if the connection goes down part-way through the transfer.

Ah, thank you for the response Roberrt :)
Now that you mention it, it does say so on the website. I guess I might need some glasses after all!
Overall a nice little serice/program though... especially if you send big files. At the moment I use Dropbox's public folder for files up to 300MB, mainly because that's the biggest size I currently send to my clients (mostly vector work). But occassionally I have to make a package that exceeds the 1GB barrier quite easily if it's a big package, which would make a move to Memeo's Send a very easy step :)
Can't say that I understand how to set up an FTP-server on my home computer; even though I'm decently tech-minded, I can't seem to grasp the right info on how to set up an FTP-server. Too difficult for me I guess ;)
joram, ftp sucks as a transfer protocol, both because it's an unencrypted protocol (even the password is passed in plain text, if you use authentication), and the ports it uses by default change all the time (you connect to port 21, but the actual transfer is done with a new connection using a semi-random port).
Instead, you should research 'sftp'. It's related to ftp only in name. It's encrypted, fairly straightforward to configure, uses only a single port (so it's trivial to put it behind a router), and there's lots of client software for all platforms that support it.
Received a personal reply from the Director of Marketing apologizing for the coupon code snafu and promising to take care of it as soon as he got into the office less than fifteen minutes after emailing him.
Very impressive.
too bad it's only for OS X 10.5 ! I have 10.4.11
:-(
No you don't need Memeo Send to receive. Web browser or desktop client. I guess we need to highlight that better. =)
Coupon issues are resolved. If anymore issues, just ping me (my address is above)

Something I couldn't find out on their website; do you need Memeo Send to receive files as well?
If so, I don't think all our clients are willing to install a program just to receive files... at least not while things like Yousendit and Megaupload are available to everyone without installing a thing for the receiving end.
you can either use memeosend or a browser to download files you receive
