Found Footage: iPhone and Qik go live for New Mexico reporter
Albuquerque TV Reporter Jeremy Jojola recently used a jailbroken iPhone and Qik [iTunes link] to broadcast a story live for KOB-TV. It's a far cry from the big trucks with microwave antennas and satellite dishes that are usually seen where news stories are broadcast.
The audio and video quality isn't perfect, but it shows how fast the technology is moving. Jeremy told me he used the AT&T 3G network for the connection.
We've already reported on the Qik app which was recently updated to allow uploading of video using the 3G network, but so far, the live capability has been nixed by Apple/AT&T. The only way to get the full benefit of live streaming is by jailbreaking the iPhone.
Qik runs on a huge variety of other smartphones with full live capability, even on the AT&T network.

When our parking structure partially collapsed at work, I got my iPhone out and fired up QIK to take some video. It got posted on twitter and made the rounds until someone at a local paper called me and asked if they could use the footage.

That is a very cool article, and good reporting too. The use of the iPhone was a really fun, and good touch to the reporting.

I don't mean to bash, having said that you guys wrote a similar article the day the 3G S came out. Some Florida TV station shot their story of people buying the new iPhone with their 3G S. Are you guys going to write an article about this every time a TV station does this?
Having worked in the broadcast industry myself for almost 20 years, this is really a who cares story since you can't edit the story on the phone. If it was a complete solution it would at least be more interesting. But not enough to warrant a second story.
The iPhone is late to the party when it comes to video recording (by several years), so this isn't revolutionary technology.
Let's not forget the quality of the video (and audio) being recorded by the iPhone is a far cry from what broadcast quality cameras and traditional microphones are capable of.

Does any see the irony in this story here? The story is about group of software developers making software for the iPhone (the cutting edge of mobile devices). Remember what other software developers came out of Albaquerky, that were making software for a cutting edge device for it's time?

To be fair the iPhone does higher quality video than what was considered broadcast quality just ten years ago. And its pretty much on par with the older and cheaper (than what is used in studio) equipment used for things like local sports.
I'd take a iPhone over a betacam deck any day.

Ahh nothing like a Corporate owned TV station broadcasting itself violating legal contracts.
Clear and simple violation of his AT&T contract right there.

Mmm.. I've Qik and a jailbreaken iPhone but I'm not aware of any way to stream live from the iPhone. Could somebody enlighten me?
I've 3G Unrestrictor, but as far as I know it doesn't enable "live streaming".

You have to get the qik app from cydia, not the app store. Then you can stream live.
