Rumor: Apple TV news on Sept. 9
The rumors are flying around the upcoming Apple press event like bees in a clover field; bees goaded on by Piper Jaffray's Senior Research Analyst, Gene Munster.On Monday, he suggested that the iPhone will be on multiple carriers in the US by next year. Yesterday, he predicted that Steve Jobs himself could make an appearance at next week's press event. Today, it's the Apple TV he's after. Citing short delivery times on the current 40GB model, he suspects that the 40GB model will be phased out and the 160GB model made less expensive.
Even if this does happen, we expect that Steve (or whomever) won't mention it. It wouldn't be the first time Apple made a change to the Apple TV immediately following a press event without having said a word.
For now, keep buzzing, little bees.
Update: Jim Dalrymple at The Loop has poured cold water on Munster's Apple TV prognostications. Dalrymple reports "very reliable sources" denying any introductions for non-music products at the 9/9 event.

Hmmm, don't know if I would.
Everyone's probably thinking it would be an amazingly thin, 46" 1080p LCD with a full-on Mac Mini and Blu Ray built in . . . .
But if the iPhone is any indication, it'll be a 720p Plasma with a DVD drive, Apple TV functionality, and will only play shows Apple approves. It'll cost $7,000 to start, but will drop to $3,000 after 4 months. 6 months after the price drop, they'll come out with a bigger hard drive version, that also has blu-ray, but you'll have to sign up with DirectTV for 2 years to get it. They won't go 1080p until 2012. Also, the program guide app will be rated 17+.

It wouldn't be the first time either if the changes to AppleTV (v1.0>2.0 anyone?) were more or less the main topic of the keynote, so I don't understand what this 'expectancy' is based on.

The AppleTV plays music and has access to the store, so your point is moot.... especially if the "cocktail" rumor is true and there is multimedia content included with albums. What better way to watch that media on a larger screen than the AppleTV?

Never mind prices, lets get it's software updated so the menu look more attractive and it is more responsive. Menu's look so ugly compared to alternatives.

Purely subjective. I think the menus look great, and hope they don't change a thing (well, maybe the fact that you can cook your dinner on top of it...)

The menus are boring and uninspiring. Not to mention the lack of other useful features that others, such as WMC, have. And does it work yet? Last I tried it would only work half the time.

Not before time. When you consider that you can now buy a PS3 Slim for the same price as the entry-level Apple TV you can see just how much work needs to be done on the Apple TV to make it competitive and attractive. I'd really like one for the movie rentals and HD TV Shows service but the price is absolutely bonkers when you consider how little you get.
The Apple TV is currently about 2-years out-of-date and needs either a kick in the pants or to be kicked into touch. Right now the current offering is just embarrassing.

Can you change the title to SPECULATION, not Rumor? There is really no evidence to base this off of, its an analyst making claims about random bits of information.
He might as well say, there COULD be an announcement for a new mac too.

Let's hope they do something quickly. Sony's PS3 is now only $299 and it can do EVERYTHING that Apple TV does, as well as access Hulu, BBC iPlayer record, rewind and pause live TV.
Let's also not forget that Sony offers completely free access to a library of music videos and the console plays games, DVDs, Blu Ray, connects to your computer to stream media, has a full web browser and will soon also be offering digital comics.

Yes, but PS3 isn't tightly integrated with iTunes like Apple TV is. I would still buy an ATV because of how easily it can access my iTunes library, plus even more importantly it updates play counts and times. Much of what I do in iTunes uses smart playlists that rely on that information.

I'd be happier with mine if they just put the darned files into the playlists I synced them from. They all end up in 1 HUGE list. For goodness sake move the playlists as well as the files to the box!

My understanding was tha the current version does support playlists. I have a friend who has an ATV and he told me he found that to get the playlist to appear in ATV you have to enable an option somewhere in the setup menus. Also, you have to specifically tell iTunes "Sync these playlists to ATV" too.
