Mac OS X 10.6.1 build 10B504 seeded to developers

The InterWebs were buzzing last evening with word that Build 10B504 of Mac OS X 10.6.1 Snow Leopard had been seeded to developers. This build appeared about a week after the initial 10.6.1 seed, which was allegedly seeded to developers only three or four days after 10.6 hit the streets.

What's interesting about this build is that it addresses only two documented issues -- the occasional crashing of Desktop Services in Finder, and excessive "dyld shared cache" messages in the Console.

Many issues that Mac users have experienced since installing Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard can be attributed to third-party software incompatibilities, but there is common agreement that there are other bugs that need to be addressed in the OS.

So, when will the new Snow Leopard cub actually hit our Macs? Mac OS X 10.5.1 was released 21 days after Leopard's first leap, and Mac OS X 10.4.1 squeaked out the doors at Cupertino a mere 17 days after Tiger first growled. It wouldn't be surprising, then, to see the first "dot-release" of Snow Leopard showing up in Software Update in the next week.

Whenever it happens, we'll be sure to let you know.

I hope the update fixes MobileMe galleries in iWeb. Friends and family now go pages with framed error messages.

I hope they disable the "press the play key to launch iTunes" feature. It is really annoying... iTunes is not the only software using these keys.

You guys missed the big one: they also updated Flash to the latest version in this update. Because 10.6.0 still have a version of Flash with security issues.

That one was addressed already in the previous seed 10B503.

I've been an Apple user since 1980. I own apple stock. I just had to get that out of the way, so everyone doesn't think I'm some hater....

but if any other company did some big hoopla about how their new product is better and refined, then released a bug patch 2 weeks later, there would be a lot of mocking and complaining.

I don't own any Macs or Apple stock, and I think you're being a bit unfair - all new software has bugs, and if they're able to turn around the patches this quickly then that's good news as far as I'm concerned. It's quite obvious (from the general response to Snow Leopard) that's there nothing *that* seriously wrong with it, just the usual niggles that they're dealing with in a timely fashion, that seems fair enough to me.

As a long term Microsoft user I can tell you that when they do some big hoopla about how their new OS is better and refined, major problems are found within days of release, and patches for those problems take several weeks if not months. Is that better?

EVERY windoze release has had patches within days of release. There is just no way to account for all the variables in beta (for any OS). Heck Linux has patches out the same day sometimes, but that is in perpetual beta.

Thanks for finding that out for me before I upgraded. I'm waiting on the 10.6.X patch that makes FrontRow work on my Mini as well as it does in 10.5. In the meantime, I'm sticking with Leopard the First. At least I only paid $30 for the new OS.
