AT&T states more MMS details for Friday
As the AT&T iPhone MMS launch is only one day away now, Engadget is reporting that they heard some launch details from AT&T. Specifically, AT&T has stated that it expects MMS for the iPhone to launch in the "late morning" Pacific time, which would mean it "early afternoon" Eastern time. Also, this update will arrive as a carrier settings update, which means you'll have to connect your iPhone to iTunes to update. These updates are very small and don't require a restart. Just make sure you and your iPhone are ready to update on Friday.

When Rogers in Canada updated their settings file, there was nothing said about a restart - BUT my tethering option did not appear until I restarted the phone. I would suggest that everyone restart after the update.

Sad but true... rarely do I find anything insightful or cutting edge like I used to. Now I find I have usually read it somewhere else first. :-(

How do carrier setting updates work if you have jailbroken your iPhone 3GS and are still running OS 3.0 due to having the tethering hack in place... anyone know?

Follow the instructions on Quickpwn.com. Worked for me. Got my tether and my mms on a 3GS running 3.0.

Agreed

I don't need tethering, but there are a handful of other hacks i enjoy having on my phone that i've been hesitant to upgrade to say the least. i was under the impression that 3GS users were unable to update to 3.1 and still have their phones jailbroken?

I did the workaround to get the new carrier file from AT&T early and I can send MMS from work...but they won't finish sending at home.
Does anyone know what that might be?

I got the carrier file a few days ago... MMS works great on my jailbroken 3.0 and I didn't lose visual voicemail or tethering.

I think a smarter idea would have been to release it this past Monday. Traffic likely wouldn't be as great as releasing on a weekend, it was still summer (not a couple days after summer) and they would have the week to get their poop in a group should something go wrong.
Instead, they chose to release it after summer breaking their promise, on the start of a weekend which is likely to have more traffic, and will make their employees sweat it out on their weekend rather than during the week I guess.
Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Since when does AT&T do anything that makes sense?
REFuZ said 11:30AM on 9-25-2009
The easy answer to that question is that AT&T doesn't staff their phones on the weekends, so there will be no one to hear you scream. aka if a tree falls in the empty forest is there any one there to hear you complain.

Will this force 3G users to update to iPhone 3.1? I've been holding off to avoid the battery issues as I NEED my only phone to actually function without completely discharging the battery.

Most people who work for a living use their cells more during the week. That's why nights and weekends are free, lots of available bandwidth. Weekend texters are mostly teenyboppers.

If it's requiring a download through iTunes how did all these other people wind up randomly getting MMS? Those seemed to be updated OTA.

I wish there was a carrier out there who can handle the iPhone with no problem without crippling it

I use iPushIt (AppStore) for weeks now. Send pictures and text for free. Who needs AT&T MMS ?
