Yummy FTP (finally) sees an update
Yummy FTP has been my favorite FTP client for quite a while. I had become so used to seeing it every day that I hadn't even realized it hadn't been updated since 2007 May, 2008. That makes today a big day, as version 1.8 is out with a deluge of new features. While it still lacks the S3 support that Transmit and Interarchy have, it's solid, fast and offers all of the advanced configuration I need with a very reasonable price tag.
Highlights from the 30+ new features include an Open In Terminal command (which can set up an SSH session, log you in and cd to the selected directory for remote folders), improved Quick Look features for local and remote previews, advanced file diffs and a greatly improved remote delete/duplicate scheme. As fast as Yummy FTP has always been for me, the idea of downloading and re-uploading a folder just to make a copy borders on insanity. I can't believe I've been doing that since 2007.
Quick tip for Yummy users: the bookmark folder in ~/Library/Preferences/Yummy FTP/Bookmarks looks (and works) great in the Dock, displayed in Folder view, especially if you organize your bookmarks hierarchically.
Yummy FTP handles FTP, FTP SSL/TLS and SFTP, and offers filtering, remote editing (with TextMate project support), auto-recovery, folder sync and more. It's available for a 30-day trial from Yummy Software, and you'll note on their site that there's a limited-time coupon ('ONLY15YUM') for a $15US license (normally $28US). That's a pretty good deal for some powerful FTP software.

Agreed. What do these others offer that Cyberduck doesn't?

Stability.

Stability, yes... usability, double yes... and a host of features I never found in Cyberduck (which was so painful to use, I deleted it years ago). I'm a big fan of YummyFTP, and am really liking the update!

i applaud cyberduck for being a free app... and for all of the work that has been put into making it... but its just flat out not for me. im a power user, and that thing just doesnt cut it.
really liking yummy though... pretty slick. think i found a replacement for transmit. although it kind of sucks not having it automatically sync via mobileme. but i can manage a remote script to back it up to idisk or something.

@MICRODOT
version 1.8 supports Dropbox syncing of Bookmarks as well as MobileMe iDisk. The latter requires iDisk sync to be enabled. The ReadMe file (available from the Help menu) documents how to do this.

Cyberduck is so slow on every Mac I've run it on. It was worth paying the cash for Yummy, the support is great!

What does it have that Transmit has. Transmit has not really been updated for a long long time.

Thanks for the glowing mini-review, Brett :)
I just wanted to clarify that in fact the previous public release of Yummy FTP was 26th May 2008, not 07. I know it's been a long time, but not two whole years! :)
And actually in the meantime, I have been releasing public betas - if you're interested in these, un-check the "Ignore betas'' checkbox in the Software Update panel of the Preferences.

I will make a change on the date, my memory must be getting foggy in my old age, or something like that. And I'll definitely stop ignoring betas :).

... and I forgot to mention that regarding your tip, the entire Bookmark hierarchy is already displayed off the Dock menu from Yummy FTP itself. No need to add the Bookmark folder yourself :)

I actually like to use it as a launcher for Yummy FTP, so it still serves a purpose. I just pop down and click the bookmark I need and jump straight to it, without launching first. Works for me :).

The last version of Transmit is really getting old but the fact that we can't import their bookmarks into other apps make the switch to another application rather difficult...

It's unfortunate that Panic encrypted their bookmarks/favorites with a proprietary method since version 3 (version 2 bookmarks will import into Yummy just fine, btw). I did mail them asking for a way to decrypt v3 info, but I never received a reply. It's a good way to keep their customers from jumping ship I guess. Perhaps if more of their actual customers asked for a plain text export (or something) they might be willing. Who knows... worth a try?

I remember emailing them about a year ago, just a few days after buying transmit, but never received an answer... They can basically ignore their customers since the bookmarks and not usable by any other piece of software.

How many bookmarks do you guys have?
How long would it take to transfer them manually?

What on earth is wrong with Cyberduck? I consider myself a power user and it meets my needs perfectly. It's well worth donating to.

I prefer YummyFTP's user interface over Cyberduck.
