The App Store unofficially breaks 100,000 approved apps
It's another milestone (unofficially) met, as Apple has passed the 100,000 threshold of approved apps in the App Store, according to App Shopper. If you're unfamiliar with App Shopper, they list all of the apps that are in the store, tracking updates and price changes. As of this writing, they're listing 101,847 apps approved for sale and 93,118 actually available. We imagine Apple will make an announcement when the latter number officially hits 100,000.Just last month, Apple announced that there were upwards of 85,000 apps available for purchase with sales figures in the billions -- 2 billion apps sold in fact, though there's no word on the mix of paid vs. free.
Despite the (often significant) bumps in the road, the App Store continues to grow at an incredible pace.

Until the App Store hits 1,000,000 apps, I don't really see why this is such a big deal to you guys. If I made one million apps, I would be perceived worldwide as a godly figure. But 100,000 apps from a variety of developers? Could be better. Much better.

I think it's more marketing than anything else. It's when you compare the number of apps to the other mobile "app stores" that the point is made.

Fart apps are less than .01% of the apps on the store. And what's really funny is that even other app stores that have far, FAR fewer titles have fart apps. How come you're not complaining about those, Jordan?

10,000 fart apps? Just because I'm feeling curious this morning, I decided to search the app store for "fart". I figure, even if NON-fart apps use it in their search description, if the end number is more than, say, 11,000 or so, it'd still be a good rough idea of how close to 1 in 10 fart apps really are.
A short search later and I ended up with 417... which includes all the apps that, woefully are unrelated to farting or fart noises at all. :( In any case, an online conversion calculator (so you can check the results) yields a percentage of 0.417%. So DEFINITELY larger than .01% but just a hair short of 10% (1 in 10).

Jordan - You're willing to admit your fake statistic is fake? That's awfully generous of you. Tell you what, how about you prove how many fart apps there are on the iPhone? How about you just do it without making excuses? Go for it, we'll wait.
When you fail to prove that there are 10,000 fart apps on the iPhone, we'll all have a good laugh at your expense and you can go back under your bridge.
As far as how many there actually are, you would have a hard time finding 50 of them just from searching, not that you've ever actually tried. And while 50 is still more apps than almost every other "app store", it's not exactly 10,000, is it?

Funny, loaded up iTunes and I got 392 apps on that search keyword.
Still, that's quite a bit, granted of the 100K apps, 50% of them are likely context changes to the same base app (i.e. theme, songs, message generators, travelto apps, etc...). And that's the misleading thing when you advertise volume of apps:
For instance, MoLinker, Inc has **9 pages** of the same app with different content! It's the same base app (travelto), but one for Florida, one for Boston, etc... basically different content. IMO I would no call them separate apps. BUT to the appstore, it's counted as 1755+ apps or almost 2% of the appstore!
Then there's the copy public info and charge 9.99 apps: e.g. Dictionary apps--there's 9+ pages of those too, most duplicates of .... cough... public information! That's like 5% of the appstore...
It's truly misleading such that volume counts don't say anything about the quality or usefulness of the apps.
Not to ping Apple *hard*, as Android and Palm do the same, but Apple is heavily marketing app count as the #1 metric of how good the store is....

is it possible not to just whinge like a little spoilt brat and actually add something meaningful to the conversation. i don't know how many are really crap but i have plenty to be happy about on the app store and that's all that matters to me.
