Found Footage: TweetDeck for iPhone gets a major makeover

The press release I received tonight said it all: "TweetDeck for iPhone -- now with added awesome." I use TweetDeck on my Macs, but had used another competing app for tweeting from my iPhone. After this update, which is the first major upgrade to this free Twitter client, I may have to reconsider!

The features in TweetDeck 1.1.1 [iTunes Link] have been given a squirt of goodness, with these new features added to the mix:
  • Video tweeting via integration with 12seconds (record video and send to Twitter or Facebook using 12seconds platform)
  • Facebook integration (updates, FB columns, wall posts, etc.)
  • Landscape composing (for those with stumbly thumbs)
  • Trending Topics to see what's happening RIGHT NOW
  • Save Draft for later
  • Bit.ly support
  • And some additional goodies...
As with the Mac and Windows versions, the TweetDeck for iPhone user interface makes great use of columns, each of which can show a different feed, direct messages, or mentions for multiple accounts. Be sure to watch the video above, and if you're still looking for an iPhone Twitter client, give this fun freebie a try.

I've been decently happy with TweetDeck, changing over when it was first released. This latest update? The best thing is that both photos and text take just seconds to upload rather than the iffy 20-24 seconds it had taken.

TweetDeck even with it's reliance on AIR is hands-down my favorite desktop client, and I've used [and paid for], but I keep going to TweetDeck on the iPhone only to be disappointed time after time. It crashed 4 times while trying to set it up, and at varying steps in the process which made it hard to blame one step that I could skip in order to proceed, one of which was that unlike the desktop app, you are required to allow TweetDeck to update Facebook [if you so choose to add FB access at all], or not be allowed to continue, which was also one of my crashes...

Once set up, I did like that there were decent options, and the ability to finally add multiple twitter accounts, though the MySpace account in the desktop version is not included, admittedly not a huge deal, but notable nonetheless. The look of the Light UI option was nice, but it does feel to me like it was tossed in as an option after other twitter apps included it. In the end I find that it's with reservations added to my roster of twitter apps for the iPhone that will actually remain on my iPhone [if it remains crash free]. If TweetDeck adds push notifications, It'll be my primary twitter app for the iPhone too.

My problem is tweetdeck only opens 100 post in the column and there is no MORE button?

I'm going to go ahead and get this out there. TweetDeck sucks compared to Tweetie. Its ugly, bloated, and rushed. Really? You give a UIAlertView for commenting on Facebook posts? Really? Take the extra 2 hours and craft a view controller for it, or better yet, do it the *actual* right way and integrate it into your compose UI, which btw is ridiculously complicated in TweetDeck on iPhone. You've got about 10 buttons on one UIToolbar. You are doing it WRONG! There are better ways to provide all these features. Tweetdeck on iPhone could be amazing, in fact the columns UI is pretty innovative, neat, and even fun to use, but the rest of the app is just garbage.

Fight me.

I'm in total, utter agreement. Air kills it for me on the desktop (and now that I'm at Mashable I have to follow Twitter shit like you have no idea) and interface kills it for me on the iPhone.

Thanks for saying this Christina...

Y'all, we already got Flash -why the fuck do we need yet ANOTHER nested engine like Adobe Air?

Here's when I'll use Tweetdeck:

- When it's a native Mac app
- When it doesn't require an account on their server (my Twitter activity is none of their goddamn business)

I dunno. I gave up on Tweet Deck after it continuously and without reason forget people in my groups. I do love Tweetie though. Worth the money.

However, I'll use whatever client is the first to get lists. My allegiance is fleeting.

I love the new white theme. It is so clean, no other twitter app is like it, they all look like any stock apple app with the lame blue title-bar and black bottom-title-bar. This is different.

I completely agree. I'm loving the new light color option. Looks very slick.

I have long been torn between Tweet Deck and Tweetie and even paid for Tweetie even though TweetDeck is free. This is great news and may but Tweet Deck over the top for me. I manage 5 accounts and the column view is just an amazing innovation. Thanks for the update!

I hope the new version has added an "Open link in Safari" option, because the built-in browser for viewing links is slow, buggy and crashy.

Nothing worse than accidentally touching the link in Tweetdeck, when you meant to copy/paste it to Safari. Because when you follow the link within tweetdeck, you're going to have to endure some sloooow times waiting for it to finish screwing it up, so you can go back to the tweet, find the link again, and copy/paste it to Safari.

Yes, there is now a "Safai" button in the built-in web browser, to open the current page in Safari.
