Gobble up this deal on 1Password Pro touch
To celebrate Thanksgiving, Agile Web Solutions is giving thanks to its customers this week in the form of a free iPhone app. Previously $7.99, 1Password Pro touch [iTunes link] is completely free until December 1st.Whether or not you use the excellent Mac edition of this app, which was recently updated to version 3.0, 1Password touch is a great addition to your iPod touch or iPhone. Essentially a password manager, this app stores login usernames and passwords, wallet information like credit card numbers, software license keys, and secured notes behind one or two levels of protection (depending on how sensitive you deem the data). With cut and paste functionality, as well as a built-in web browser, it's a great way to simplify logging into password-protected sites or even making online purchases. Of course, to get the most out of the mobile version, a copy running on your Mac is a must. With it, you'll be able to sync your information between the devices.
The standard app is great and all, but since both versions are free for the time being, you might as well grab the Pro. Extra features include folders for better organization, the ability to copy multiple fields to paste elsewhere, and a unique switching mode to quickly copy and past info into Mobile Safari. In addition, there are some Pro-only features on the way including MobileMe and WebDAV syncing (I can't wait for that!), and Favorites.
If you already have the regular touch edition, make sure to back up your data before removing the old app and upgrading to the Pro version. Those with the Mac application can rely on Wi-Fi syncing to ensure the latest info is on the computer, however Agile has instructions on its site for those without. Once you've removed the standard 1Password touch and installed Pro, you can restore the data.

A while ago I bought Wallet for the Mac and iPhone and they work pretty well, they sync through MobileMe and everything. Does anyone know of any reasons that I should consider switching over to 1Password?

Because 1Password is awesome. Updates to the software are done so often, that it can be annoying, but you can be comfortable in the fact that this is top-notch software that is some of the best if not most secure offerings out there.

They really are a lot alike, but the new 1Password 3 has a cool feature where you can basically access your passwords wherever you go (provided you have the agile keychain on a flash drive or a web service such as dropbox) and use the app through your web client. Very cool feature.

While I love 1Password for Mac the 1Password Pro Touch constantly crashes the desktop app on wi-fi sync.

Hi, Zach. Sorry for the trouble you're having. You should definitely not be seeing crashes during sync. You can email us your Diagnostics Report, and this will help us track down the issue more quickly. You can generate the report from 1Password by clicking the Help > Troubleshooting > Diagnostics Report... menu item and then attach the report to an email to support@agile.ws.

OK - this is me maybe being a bit TOO paranoid - if that is possible. What is to prevent this app from taking, say my bank account number along with my password and sending it to someone, say even the app creator? This is one reason I have not used Quicken, iBank, etc., because I do not know the folks on the other end of the apps. It seems like a big risk to me to enter my VALUABLE information into the app that COULD be sent to someone at 1password, who could then use it to wipe me out.
Before you laugh at me, I have worked in correctional services (jails and prisons) for the last 22 years... you would be *SHOCKED!!* at what they can do and have done!

My guess is that Apple reviews that type of thing and wouldn't permit it.

I got ripped off by 1Password!
I bought their software last year.. I made all my passwords complicated and secure, and backed them up on their online system. I then went to India and while I was there 1Password shut down their online system which then effectively locked me out of my bank, email, everything.. it was extremely inconvenient!! I had to borrow money just to survive three more months!
On contacting 1Password with my problem they completely ignored my situation and were of absolutely no help at all!
Dont waste your money. I have tried both 1Password and Roboform. I am very happy now with Roboform... Roboform also has a free iPhone app that syncs really nicely and works great... AND Robofom is cheaper! Its a no-brainer for me!

I'm sorry again for the troubles you experienced with the my1Password web service. This service was an early stages of development and we tried our best to make it clear that people using the service were testers and should not rely on it for mission critical situations.
After months of testing, we decided to discontinue the service, and we wanted to cancel it right away. However, we knew people were using the service so we announced it would be closed by the end of the year. You can see in this thread that we announced the closure in October 2008:

When the closure date came up, I decided to extend the scheduled closure by a few more weeks just to be on the safe side. After 3 months I had hoped everyone had another system in place. Unfortunately you obviously did not get this notice nor the email we sent to all the my1Password testers, so you didn't know the plug was about to be pulled on the service.
I apologize again for all the trouble and we will do our best to make sure nothing like this happen again.

I purchased 1password for $69.95, and found it wouldn't really meet my particular needs. Not any fault of the program itself, I'm sure it works as advertised. I just wanted to point out that the return policy was honored and my money was returned without much fuss. If you're going to buy this program, it's my experience that if it doesn't meet your needs you can get a refund.

The $69.95 is for a family license which covers 5 users in the same household which means this can be as low as $13.99 a person if all 5 are used. Furthermore, 1Password is licensed per user and not per Mac like some software. Therefore, each person can use it on multiple Macs which brings the cost of ownership down even more vs. per Mac licenses for each user. :)
