Apple forces Stanza to nix USB book sharing

Those who enjoy USB book sharing their ePub and eReader files in the current version of Stanza [iTunes link] will want to avoid the 2.1 version of the software, currently being distributed in the App Store. The update notes reveal that Apple apparently ordered Lexcycle to remove the USB sharing ability. Unfortunately, Lexcycle is forbidden from explaining why they were told to remove the feature.

To me -- and this is pure speculation -- this is Apple's equivalent of giving Amazon the finger. Amazon acquired Lexcycle back in 2009, and that this could be part of a series of moves by Apple to drive people toward the iPad and the upcoming iBooks software. I wouldn't be too surprised if Apple found a way to ban the wonderful Kindle app [iTunes link] from the App Store at some point in the future. Is Apple becoming the next Tammany Hall with Steve Jobs its "Boss" Tweed?

For now, to avoid losing USB sharing, remember not to do a bulk upgrade of your apps and avoid any future Stanza updates.

If these features aren't going to ever be in Stanza, can we at least have an iBook app for the iPhone?

What Iam said. Apple is wearing my patience thin.

In the short term, even if Stanza is newly lacking USB sync, one could still use DiskAid or similar and copy directly to ~/DCIM/Stanza.

This really frustrates me. I use USB sync, putting my documents in the central DCIM location, as my standard way to move files to the app, and I always have. This is stuff like PDF files or Microsoft Office documents for work, finances, study, etc.

Referencing a central location (such as the DCIM folder) for all files is a huge deal. It means I can use two different apps to read the same file (such as Good Reader, PDF Expert, Quickoffice, etc). If I'm in Good Reader and I want to view a doc file I can. Or, I can leave Good Reader and use Quickoffice to edit the same doc file better.

This is something any decent OS can do. iPhone OS is weird since you don't have a normal file browser where you "open with". But the functionality is still there as long as you can open any file in a central location (ie, the DCIM folder) from inside any app.

Not being able to do stuff like this really cripples the iPhone OS.

This is bullshit. This is the same stunt apple has pulled with Google voice and lattitude. I have Stanza, and I actually upgraded. You know whats worst? Having your previous app (you know the last version) automatically sent to the recycling bin after you've updated without your knowledge. Once deleted, there's no way to go back. Real slick apple. Nice move. Talk about breaking innovation. You tell stanza to remove usb book sharing or get forced out of the app store. You decide. This continuous control over the their products will result in defeat as no will purchase any products if they feel restricted to all the things you can possibly do with them.

If apple thinks taking away functionality from one device will drive customers towards another one they are so wrong..

Open it up a$$h0les.

Once i buy a device and somebody is smart enough to create an app you did not think of. let me use it.
keep going and you'll lose all of you more advanced customers.

Jailbreaking the ipad will be so much fun..
