iPad jailbreak demonstrated

This didn't take very long. Above is a video demonstrating the so-called "Spirit" jailbreak of an iPad. Note that the software breaks iPhone OS 3.2, currently only available on the iPad. It also works with iPhone OS 3.1.3 for the iPhone and iPod touch.

In the video above, the user gets root access to the iPad and launches the Maps application. iPhone owners typically jailbreak their devices to use other carriers. Of course, the 3G iPad scheduled to be released this month will be sold unlocked, but it's 3G frequencies will be limited to AT&T in the US.

Good work, MuscleNerd. You're fast!

Do yall know if it'll ever be possible to make it were you'll be able to get free 3G all the time/any time? I'm not as tech savy or on the know as much as yall seem to be and was just wondering cause that seems like it's one draw back :/

3 days now that is quick. Well guess there is a big market that probably wants this ASAP anyways.

Yup. But there are some (like me). Traveling overseas without an unlock is a b*tch.

No, most people do not jailbreak to use other carriers. Most people UNLOCK to use other carreirs.

Jailbreaking is the process that allows you to run unofficial software on the device.

Clearly the writer isn't familiar with the scene.

Canada - you know that place where they had the Olympics this year? Yeah, that's a different country than the US, and all the major carriers up there use the same 3G frequencies as AT&T.

It's = it is. There's no apostrophe when indicating possession.

Jailbreaking is not the same as unlocking. Jailbreaking refers to defeating the security features on the phone to allow unsigned code. This can be used for anything from homebrew, non-AppStore applications, to pirating software. Unlocking refers to hacking around the carrier lock in the phone's baseband. To unlock, you typically need to jailbreak, as otherwise there's no way to run the unlock code.

The distinction is important, as (for example), iPhone OS 3.1.3 has been jailbroken for some time - but there is no unlock for the associated baseband.

An iPad jailbreak makes somewhat less sense than for the iPhone (no unlock to perform, and no "non-approved" apps at this point), and will most likely be used primarily for piracy. It's not the only use - I'm sure some enthusiasts will love SSH access and running a web server and such on their iPad, but most folks are just going to pirate apps.

As for the frequency issue with AT&T, no software change will affect that - the radio in the iPad/iPhone is not capable of using T-Mobile 3G frequency ranges.
