PC tells Mac -- "Get a Mac" ads might be done

Justin Long, who plays Mac in the Get a Mac ads, has told The Onion's A.V. Club that he believes the Get a Mac ad campaign has come to an end. When The Onion asked Justin what the status was on the Apple ads, he replied, "You know, I think they might be done. In fact, I heard from John, I think they're going to move on. I can't say definitively, which is sad, because not only am I going to miss doing them, but also working with John."

The Get a Mac ads have been widely applauded by the advertising industry, winning a Grand Effie Award in 2007. The campaign was first launched in the US in 2006, and Apple then expanded it to Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. The US and Canadian ads starred Justin Long as Mac and John Hodgman as PC. The two have appeared together in 66 television ads to date. The pair has also featured in 10 Web-only ads posted on various Web sites like The New York Times.

Apple has gone spans of time with no TV advertising for their Mac computers before. It's possible that they will be throwing all their ad dollars behind the iPhone and iPad for the time being. However, if Justin Long is correct that the Get a Mac ads are over, it does not preclude that a new Mac ad campaign is in the works.

All the Get a Mac ads can be viewed at Apple's ad gallery.

Gotta say, I'm glad this ad campaign is ending. I think these ads did a bit of damage to the company's image, honestly. People certainly casted Mac users as elitist and smug before these ads came out, but it was a low rumble compared to a crescendo of vitriol after a couple of years of the "Get a Mac" campaign. The fact that John Hodgeman always came off as a sort of loveable loser while Justin Long came off as a somewhat holier-than-thou smartarse was a big, big mistake in this ad campaign.

I think it was also a mistake to spend so much time in these ads making fun of Windows and trying to tell people all the things that are wrong with PCs rather than all the things that are -right- with the Mac.

Apple's next ad campaign should just pretend that Windows doesn't exist at all and focus instead on what the average person can get out of a Mac. Get some of that "magical experience" across in Mac ads the way they do with iPhone/iPod ads, and that'd be a killer campaign.

Well said! David Ogilvy, the advertising guru, always maintained that a great advertisement never, ever mentions the competition directly, because the advertiser should not give free mindshare to the competition. This is why current Burger King ads for the double cheeseburger only refer to other burger joints' double cheeseburgers as "the competition," never by brand name. Granted, "PC" is not a brand name, but Windows sure is.

Plus, as you pointed out, John Hodgman is too funny and lovable, even when he plays up Windows' faults.

I use Windows XP, Windows 7, Mac and Linux (Ubuntu 10.04) every day, and enjoy each equally for different reasons. I think if Apple really wants to boost sales with advertising, it should concentrate on what makes their products great (admittedly, in my opinion): quality hardware with innovative design elements; outstanding operating software; and excellent customer support. Essentially, rather than focusing on how bad the competition is, they should focus on their own excellence.

Also, they should hire Catherine Zeta-Jones away from T-Mobile.

I am with you Joanna .. I think Apple has maybe put too much on its shoulders .. or maybe they just don't care much about the computer market anymore.
Leopard was a joke of a system and pretty far away from what I had expected. Snow Leopard is better, but I still find myself switching spaces to find that alert window again that just disappeared. My battery died after a good year (with me being pretty careful with it) and now the power brick and the display start getting dodgy .. not really the build quality I expected either.

I love my iPhone still .. it is a great product and with the now annouce update it will be up to par with the competition again .. well almost. Hope it comes back from repair soon .. just died on me as well.

I was continually amazed at how they were able to keep working new ideas into place. Granted, the longer they aired the less pantomime-like they became (losing a sweet, innocent creativity they had at first), but they still managed to get chuckles and be original.

btw, TUAW, that link "all the ads" on Apple.com isn't all of them. If you do a search you can find treasure troves that have catalogued them all.

Again, for the 408th time, I'll ask: Why do you come on a MAC ONLY site, Joann? Seriously, every time you post it's to be a troll. If you don't like something, fine, who cares. But coming in here 100% of the time to bash Apple products has no other purpose other than what happens when you shake a bee hive. I hope you get banned.

I liked the ads, but found it interesting that Justin Long uses a PC IRL and John Hodgeman uses a Mac IRL.

Though, a friend/coworker pointed something out to me. I don't know a single PC user who switched to a mac because of the ads. The bigger thing has been the iphone , which has in fact pulled plenty of colleagues into buying a mac as their "next computer."

A good thing, because quit while you're ahead, Apple. Besides, the biggest growth will be mobile device sales, the iPad/iPhone/iTouch. Then it's easy to cross-sell the Mac when you have lines of people gobbling these up.

Also, since Windows 7 has pretty much removed the stink that was Vista from people's mouths (I love Win 7 for the most part), time to move on and compete where the real money and growth potential is right now.

I love these ads, and they are what made me buy a Mac 6 months ago (and loving it since). Don't stop :(

John Hodgeman is a guest on MSNBC's "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" tonight with a special announcement...Hmmmmm.

I am thinking that the end of the "Get a Mac" campaign may be that announcement.

8pm ET/5pm PT.

I thought the multiverses were resolved way back during the Crisis On Infinite Earths, but here I find myself asking just what color the sky is in your world?
