Found footage: Android tablet prototype running (and crashing) Flash

Adobe is showing off Android-based prototype tablets at the Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco. Zedomax has a pretty gushing review of Flash's performance on these tablets, calling it "rather incredible technology." There's no mention of how the battery life in these prototype tablets suffers while playing Flash video, though. In his "Thoughts on Flash," Steve Jobs noted that using Flash on the iPhone effectively halves its battery life.

What's far more interesting, and far more hilarious, is that although Zedomax claims Flash works "flawlessly" on these tablets, there's certainly evidence to the contrary. In the video above, the Android tablet reviewer is showing off the Flash functionality. Just as he says, "Good thing I didn't buy an iPad, because this one does Flash," the browser crashes. "Whoops," the reviewer says, gamely trying to carry on with his review in spite of the crash. [Never mind that he's demoing Flash by playing a YouTube video, which of course the iPad does just as well. –Ed.]

As an interesting side note, the same reviewer says that these Android tablets are "basically a giant Android phone." So, if you hate the iPad because "it's just a big iPod touch," please remember that, in the interest of not sounding like a fanboy, you are obligated to hate the Android tablet (whenever it actually gets released) for the same reason.

If you read the actual review from the guy who posted the video, he directly says that it did NOT crash -- he just hit the Home button by accident. No need to speculate, he says this flat-out in the article.

Nothing to see here, move along...

The only problem I have with this article is that it's basking in the glory of Flash crashing when both iPad and iPhone apps are just as susceptible of crashing apps from time to time. Kind of pot and kettle type stuff.

Fact is that NO electronic device is without its faults. They crash, they hang, they freeze, they stutter, it happens. And while this site is clearly aimed at Apple lovers there has to be a certain amount of respect for the "other guys". What I do think is stupid is that he's showing off YouTube like that doesn't work on the iPad. Show off an all Flash site like HBO.com or theFWA.com (the museum of Flash-based websites). Not freakin' YouTube you moron.

But I digress. The bigger questions about this device is power consumption and reliability. Can I run YouTube, Vimeo, HBO.com and ComedyCentral.com videos at the same time without the thing catching on fire in my hands? And will the battery be dead in 5 minutes if I run all of this at the same time? What about plugging in a jump drive? How much power will I lose if I'm doing all of that AND have a jump drive connected? No matter what you say those things eat power and the more memory on the stick the more power it needs to stay active.

It really doesn't really matter if the device can run Flash. The question is can it run Flash just as well (or bad) as a computer and still offer a smooth user experience like the iPad? My money's on 'no'.

@beenyweenies, seriously either you work for adobe or you are flat out the dumbest @sshole i've ever seen. Or you are another one of those wannabe winbloze flash "app developers" that is butthurt that he needs to get a real computer and learn a real programming language to make money on apples store. scolding people for not having their "facts" straight when you haven't posted one factual thing yet.

@Level5 Dude, it's clearly an app crash. You even hear the guy make a surprised sound when it quits. Flash has its uses, yes. But it has yet to be refined and streamlined and is currently just a bloated piece of overused garbage.

BWAA HA HA HA!!!! Flash SUCKS!!!!! Even Adobe knows it. That's why they refuse to try to fix it and make a viable iPhone/iPad version. They know that it sucks too bad to work! HAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Well gee, if Gruber shouted it from the depths of Steve Jobs' bowels, then it must be true! He is, after all, a totally unbiased source...

By the way, apps crash on my iPad all the time, mobile safari being chief among them.

Good thing the browser on my iPad can crash by iteself, without the need for flash. I'm glad TUAW pointed that out.

I've had the thing less than a week, and I'd say it crashes once a day.

This on top of the WiFi issues.

When you look at Mobile Safari and say a small flash ad there is just no way that flash can display the file then zoom in and change size the way straight HTML and CSS can. It just simple as that. I can remember when Adobe hated flash before they bought it. They talked it down all the time SVG was their answer to Flash. Then they purchase Macromedia and OH Flash is just "Great". Plugins in a browser are security holes and flash is a real big one. Don't get me going on Flash for applications if a developer is so lazy as to not want to learn native application development I don't want to buy their C**P.

Why dont you name a few of the security holes you're referring to? Specifically, why dont you tell us which security holes it has that javascript and other web technologies dont suffer from?

Never mind, we all know you wont respond because the anti-flashers are almost universally repeating crap they read from Jobs or Gruber or some other vague source that never lays out specifics because they are bunk charges. Go read symantec's 2009 security report, you'll see what I mean.
