The store is down... and back up

The Apple Store is down again. And we are, once again, glued to our monitors, constantly refreshing the display.

Is the Apple Store nothing but a giant, international Skinner Box? Maybe store outages have nothing to do with WebObjects and everything to do with operant conditioning? What do you think? Is Apple trying to take over your mind? Is this a grand evil conspiracy?

Let us know in the comments.

Hmmm. Suddenly we're craving cookies. You?

Update: After roughly an hour of downtime, the store is back up with no obvious changes. Apple was probably just doing some maintenance, possibly related to their new "Compare Macs" option.

I have a solution that will stop people from staring at a sticky while pressing the refresh button. It may be a crazy solution but here it goes…post the article after the store is back up and only if there was a change to the site. Hope this helps.

Really people? Don't you have anything better to do than jump at any mistake apple makes and say that they are "using you", "messing with your minds" or any of the rest of that stuff? Nothing is perfect, so I mean really just leave apple alone. Jeez.

For those who are merely interested in what changed, this line was added:

Fast, free shipping on orders over $50.

@Erica

I agree that the store is down stuff is getting silly.

If anything important actually happens feel free to report that (2 or 3 days after everyone else as usual for TUAW).

The store is down isn't the story. The story would be about a significant change after the store is back up.

If it's not significant don't worry about it.
Have a cookie or two, write out your "the store is down" story-just don't post it to TUAW.

I can only imagine the frenetic checking that goes on during each "the store is down" moment!

The reality is that a short time after a significant change their will be a press release and radio and TV and blogs will report the real news!

To be clear I do enjoy hearing about significant announcements and/or products from Apple.

I don't mind reading news that is 2 or 3 days old. But it's a kick in the teeth when they get the 'site is down' stories out within 5 minutes.

It's like Erica just sits around waiting for the site to go down, rather than looking around for a half decent news story to publish

"It's like Erica just sits around waiting for the site to go down, rather than looking around for a half decent news story to publish..."

That would be true if she actually posted half decent news.

Am I the only person on earth who wonders why Apple is the most well-funded and technologically skilled company on earth which still has not figured out how to update a website without downtime?

I mean, what if Amazon had to go down for 2 hours every time they added products?

I don't think I've worked on a website in 15 years that didn't have seamless staging and production flows.

Knowing Apple, and Steve Jobs, it's for the publicity. It's smart business.

Sometimes if you are making important changes, it's best not to introduce it to a live system. Take the system down, make sure it installs okay, check it, and bring it back up. As someone who supports an ERP, I would beat anyone who tried to update the ERP while live. Even minor updates make significant changes to the back end and front end.

Unfortunately TUAW completely missed the point of the last update, which was the store introduced a "compare macs" feature. It was subtle enough that you had to do, yanno, some work to find it? It appears to be not subtle enough that you might need to bring the site down to make the change. Apparently another site could find it but TUAW could not?

This update might be subtle, or it might be maintenance. Dunno, don't care, lovely fluff article.

Thanks TUAW, once again you post needless fluff and filler for your website. Perhaps I should start a blog solely focusing on all the times you freak out because the Apple site is down.

All that video needs is the loungey music and I'd have thought I was watching Robot Theater on Red Eye.

Operant conditioning? Pfft. There'd be obvious signs if Apple was engaged in any sort of conditioning or brainwashing. Do you really think that would slip by us all?

Now, excuse me. I need to go collect my two iPhones, iPad and MacBook Pro before I head out to the coffeeshop...

The app store is back up, but I haven't seen anything new . . . I think Steve is having a grand ole time putting up that sticky.
