Apple releases preview 3 of Xcode 4
Okay, I might be a little bit fangrrlish about the new Xcode 4 IDE. But seriously, it's really an awesome update to the existing Xcode tools. Yes, it's still majorly buggy and yes, there are still many features missing in action -- but it's such a treat to see how the new tools are evolving into their final form. Today, Apple has released developer preview 3 of the new Xcode 4 suite, which you can download by heading over to the developer.apple.com site. You will need to sign in with your online or paid developer credentials to access the page and the preview dmg. I'm a little iffy about what the NDA situation is with regards to the release (I believe it is under NDA until it leaves beta) so I'll leave finding out about the details (there's a Readme and release notes) to you.

I am a paid developer, but still see the following on download page at https://developer.apple.com/devcenter/ios/index.action#betadownloads:
Snow Leopard Downloads
* Xcode 3.2.4 and iOS SDK 4.1
* Xcode 3.2.4 Readme
No Xcode 4.
I had to click on the "iOS SDK beta" tab on the top to actually see it at the bottom:
SDK 4
Xcode 4 developer preview 3

Hi,
This is excellent news. I have been using XCode 4 on my latest project for a while.
I really love where it is going.
There are some things missing, but with our help the final relased product will be spot on.
cheers
Si
Wish I had the money for the paid program so I could get Xcode 4. I really, really want that unified tool set. Hurry up and release that thing for everyone Apple!

But hey, maybe that's just me.
Jeez, here I was just trying to show lighthearted enthusiasm. No need to be so harsh. Besides, from the comments I've seen even this beta has gotten largely extremely positive feedback.

I have only signed up with the Safari developer program because that is the only one that is free. Do I have to drop $99?
September 02 2010 at 7:09 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYeah, if you want to download it, you'll have to be a paid developer. I'm in the free program which allows me to download Xcode 3, but I can only read a page about Xcode 4 (actually, anyone can read it, I believe).

If you really develop software for a living $99 is not that big of a deal.
I agree, the new Xcode 4 is awesome. Apple did a really great job.
September 02 2010 at 7:06 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAny opinions yet - is it stable enough to develop on?
September 02 2010 at 7:00 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYesterday it was iOS GM Seed + Xcode, today it's Xcode Preview.
People complain about the "wow" factor at the announcement, but I tell you one thing;
It's going to be a good rest of the year between the new hardware, 4.1 official, 4.2 unification/official, etc. Good setup, good pace.
It's a great time to be a geek. I'm right there with you, Ms. Sadun.
P.S. If it's Mrs. Sadun, I thoroughly apologize for the error.
