iOS 4.2 for iPad, iPhone, iPod touch ready for download

As promised by Apple, iOS 4.2 is now available. Head on over to iTunes and download the latest and greatest iOS firmware to date. iOS 4.2 brings a huge number of improvements to the iPhone and iPod family and finally brings the iPad into the 4.x fold. It's a terrific update, and one, we think, that's been worth the wait.
Let us know in the comments how your upgrade went, and how you like the new release.
Direct download for iPad here. Shows as build 8C148.
Direct download for iPhone 4 here.

trying to download latest ipad update. Itunes gets all the way to the end, then says download incomplete check security settings or try again. This has been going on for about a week. I downloaded using the direct link provided in this forum, and now I can't install it. I know where the download is and I can see it but Itunes can't. I am running a PC with windows vista installed.

anybody find any other easter eggs?
Downloaded update...failed on first shot...did complete restore and it worked.
Found out after that my card reader no longer works with the camera kit. Worked night before but after update said something bout device requiring too much power
This update sucks. I have a 3GS and other than Air Print I don't see any advantages for me. I can't change fonts in notes, I can't Find my iPhone and I don't see Air Play so what good is it?
November 23 2010 at 8:49 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe font settings are under the general Settings. Scroll down and you'll find it between Photos and Store.
The only benefits I see I've gained (for my 3GS) are:
- respond to calendar events. Used to be able for exchange calendars but not for Google, etc. This is actually really nice.
- fixed the audio over USB for in-car playback. Also a huge plus.
Nice to have:
- Find text search.
Meh new features (for me):
- AirPlay: not set up in any way I can use it.
- AirPrint: no compatible printer (and not planning on upgrading unless it dies).
WTF Apple, why isn't this available for the 3GS:
- Find my phone
Hoping iOS 5 finally introduces:
- selectable Location in calendar events (launching Maps or, better yet, using a map view).
- multiple signatures in Mail.
- custom ringtones (not missing the new ones at all since they seem useless for this purpose).
- Improved notification mechanism.
- Dynamic lock-screen (showing mail message count, weather, etc.)
And, I forgot: AirPlay appears on the right side of the player controls. It might only show up if it detects devices you can send media to. I saw it at home (letting me choose an Airport Express - although I have no speakers connected to it) but I don't see it now.
November 23 2010 at 9:45 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've really been looking forward to the ability to AirPrint from my iPad - just to find out that the ability to print wirelessly to shared printers has been removed in the final release of iOS 4.2 according to http://justanotheripadblog.com/ios/airprint-has-dropped-shared-printers-in-ios-4-2-release/
Does His Steveness really think that everyone will go out and buy a HP-printer to be able to this?
So disappointed...
Not happy the mute button change doesn't really work.

November 22 2010 at 10:24 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyJust ran a full backup on my iPad this weekend to be ready should 4.2 come out this week. Despite that, and syncing again today before downloading the update, iTunes has now been "backing up iPad" for over 2 hours, and the thermometer bar is only about 1/3 of the way across.
Using USB 2, only have about 25GB on data on it.
Anyone have any idea what the !$#@#$%^*%@ iTunes does this all the time? I get these hours long "backups" sporadically, but far too frequently.
Rewrite iTunes from scratch please!
