Google announced yesterday that during the holiday season, it is sponsoring free Wi-Fi at 47 airports around the United States, as well as on every Virgin America flight. According to CNN, those who choose to take advantage of this will be urged to set Google as their home page, or receive an offer to download Google Chrome. Google has also suggested that those utilizing the free service should donate the money they would have otherwise spent on airport Wi-Fi to a worthy charity.

Full details, including a list of airports, a contest and the charity drive, can be found at FreeHolidayWiFi.com. To connect on a MacBook, MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, simply make sure your Airport is turned on and look for the available networks at your airport, then launch a web browser to complete the connection.

Other free Wi-Fi deals for the holidays include Yahoo donating a year of free Wi-Fi service to Times Square in New York City, and Microsoft's Bing search engine joining forces with JiWire to offer free Wi-Fi at JiWire hotspots that opt into the program -- provided that you run a search using Bing first.
TUAWGoogle to deliver free airport Wi-Fi for the holidays originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 11 Nov 2009 18:30:00 EST. This is roughly 9 percent of the company's workforce. The news comes on the heels of Electronic Arts' decision to layoff 1,500 workers and a reduction of 600 from Adobe back in December. Adobe had purchased Omniture in September and reduced its workforce by 9 percent at that time.

The cost of restructuring for Adobe will total between $65 and $71 million, the TechCrunch article says.

The layoffs come just after Adobe announced that Flash Professional CS5 will be able to turn Flash projects into iPhone apps. The company has also recently released a version of its Photoshop.com Mobile app for the iPhone [iTunes link].
TUAWAdobe layoffs strike home, 680 to lose jobs originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 10 Nov 2009 23:30:00 EST. The $5 Shazam Encore (link opens iTunes) offers faster, unlimited tagging of music. A new mode designed for your car will tag whatever music is playing over the radio if you have your iPhone or iPod Touch hooked up to a car adapter. There are also recommendations based off existing tags, the ability to search Shazam's database, and more.

This new feature set does come at a cost to new users of the Shazam free app. New users can now only tag five pieces of music per month. The VentureBeat article adds that existing users of the free app can still tag with no limits.

It is with great sadness that I write you at home to your Gmail account to inform you that I am intending to sell your ring on Ebay and we will part ways. You see, ours was a mixed relationship to begin with. You have your Windows 7, your Linux, your original Android phone from T-Mobile in the UK. I have my iPhone, my iMac and everything good that's Apple (and even a few pieces that aren't).

That's why I know it'll never work out between us. According to a recent study from Retrevo, iPhone owners believe that a "cool gadget" makes a person far more attractive than the measly doctorate you've spent years studying for. Every time we are together, I can't help but shudder over the fact that your Android phone is not of the latest generation.

So forget the four years of history between us, the months of separation due to our being in two different countries, and the fact that you are a wonderful, kind, sweet, and intelligent man with a bright future ahead of you. I have someone else I think the world of, and it is my iPhone. Now if you'll excuse me, I must go watch adult material and post up an ad at Match.com for someone with a 3GS.

Much love,
Your dear departed Megan

For me, however, the upgrade was an improvement to an adequate piece of hardware -- when it chose to work. By mid-afternoon, I was listening to classical music being streamed over Internet radio, and I was very happy with the Apple TV for the most part. The flagship new features -- iTunes Extras and iTunes LPs -- were finicky and hard to work. Trying to navigate through iTunes Extras was akin to herding cats. When it works, it's fantastic. When it doesn't, you want to hurl something at the wall.

I'm quite the opposite of fellow blogger Steve Sande when it comes to the Apple TV. I chose the device over getting cable back in February. I promptly did the hacks to open up the USB port and utilize Boxee (with Hulu) and XBMC. Please note that these hacks will be wiped when you upgrade to 3.0.

I frequently use it because it became the perfect home for streaming content from first an external hard drive, then my new iMac. I'm an anime fan, and used the chance to rip my DVDs to my hard drive and have all the episodes in one place. It's very nice not to have to get up and change DVDs after every 3-4 episodes. I also stream YouTube content and play music over it.

Here's a look at some of the new features:
Continue reading I heart my Apple TV, but as for 3.0 ...

TUAWI heart my Apple TV, but as for 3.0 ... originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 30 Oct 2009 18:00:00 EST.
A new terms of service agreement has been posted up for iTunes users to approve when purchasing songs, movies or apps -- but a read of the summary reveals that Apple TV 3.0 software is on the way. Thus far, all we know is that the update will include support for iTunes LPs and iTunes Extras. A quick check of my Apple TV reveals no update has been pushed to the devices as of yet.

It was a beautiful port of an existing desktop game and one of the cases where the iPhone version blew its desktop sibling out of the water regarding graphics and playability.

That's why, with a genuine cry of dismay, I read the very sad news from Maciej Biedrzycki, co-founder of Codeminion Development Studios, that StoneLoops! was pulled from the App Store today thanks to complaints from MumboJumbo, creators of rival game Luxor. Charges levied against Codeminion include copyright infringement, "confusing customers," stealing the look and feel of Luxor and their source code.

One of the most ironic facts? Codeminion offered StoneLoops! to MumboJumbo initially. The company declined to pick up the game and did not cite any sort of copyright infringement then.

In addition, the original StoneLoops! desktop game was released three years after the first Luxor game to little fanfare. However, when it came to the iPhone port, StoneLoops! was several months ahead of Luxor. It was enjoying immense popularity when Luxor finally debuted in the App Store in late August. It was only then that MumboJumbo launched its complaint against Codeminion.
Yes, both StoneLoops! and Luxor have similar formats, bonuses and goals, but so does Zuma from PopCap Games. One imagines what would happen to time-management games if PlayFirst decided to go after every Diner Dash clone, for example. There is room for both games on the App Store, and I hope Apple reconsiders its decision. If not, PopCap better gear up for a battle against MumboJumbo should it decide to port Zuma to the iPhone.
Legal issues? What legal issues?

Psystar has announced that it plans to license its virtualization technology for OS X to third-party vendors despite its continuing legal issues with Apple. The Psystar OEM Licensing Program, designed to allow Intel machines to run Snow Leopard -- actually, certified machines from Psystar running the company's Darwin Universal Boot Loader -- can support up to six operating systems at a time in a single piece of hardware.

"Once a product is certified, consumers can purchase it off the shelf or through standard channels and when labeled Psystar Certified would allow the installation of Snow Leopard simply by inserting the retail OS X DVD," Psystar said in a press release issued today.

The cost of this licensing program is not available at this time.

Apple and Psystar go to trial in January 2010.

Grid View, which allows you to see multiple images and forms all at once

Simple List field

Library folders

New security options including database passwords and encrypted fields

Group e-mailing

Customers who purchased Bento 2 between August 30 until October 14 can upgrade for free. A family pack of five licenses is $99. An upgrade to Bento for the iPhone and iPod touch [iTunes link] to resolve any compatibility issues with Bento 3 will be available soon.

Bento 3 requires OS X 10.5.7 or above, and can be run on G4 (867 MHz or faster), G5 and Intel processors. 512 MB of RAM and 1GB of available hard drive space is recommended. Our planned look at the camera feature on the iPod nano got delayed by a household medical emergency, as described in one of our nano example videos above. It did give me a bit more time to go a little more hands on with the nano video camera, and the end result is satisfactory. You're not going to buy this nano for the camera; it's just a bonus feature. Will it be the deal breaker over buying a nano versus another iPod, an iPhone or even a Flip? It all depends what you want out of it.
The video above was shot indoors using the nano. It was actually my fourth attempt at taking an indoor video because if you want any luck with the nano's camera, you've got to have decent lighting. This shot was my first attempt with the camera, and you can see the difference the lighting made.
As mentioned during the keynote, Apple is looking to take on Flip mino with the new nano. As such, we decided to see not only how the nano compares to the Flip, but also to an iPhone 3GS. Continue on reading to see how these shots turned out.

According to Paid Content, News Corp's Rupert Murdoch announced that readers of the WSJ on the Blackberry and iPhone will be charged $2 per week for the privilege of reading news through the respective apps. Online and print subscribers of the WSJ will only pay $1 a week. No time limit has been set yet, but Murdoch says it will be within the next few months.

There's bad news for Hulu lovers as well. Murdoch also said News Corp is considering either a pay-per-view or subscription model for Hulu. "No final decision has been made," Murdoch said via Webcast at an investor conference today. The WSJ itself reports that subscription offerings will roll out for media content before the end of the year, though it was made in a different context from the Hulu statement.

TUAWWSJ to start charging for iPhone content originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 15 Sep 2009 15:00:00 EST. There will be a day in the not-too-distant future when playing 3D games in your browser -- without extra plugins like Flash or Unity -- will be a reality.

The WebGL project, which has quickly made the blogging rounds this morning, combines aspects of HTML 5, JavaScript, and the OpenGL 3D drawing engine in an effort to create 3D graphics that appear right in your browser. Thus far, it's only beginning to show up in WebKit (the engine powering Safari and Google Chrome), but the glimpses as seen in the video above really show the power in these browsers.

While people were still reeling from the fact that the iPod nano, and not the iPod touch, gained a video camera, my trusty 5.5G 30 GB iPod video decided to die a slow, painful death. Over the past few weeks, I'd been hearing the hard drive click of doom, having the iPod randomly reboot while listening to an audiobook, and then had the entire system lock up on me and not unfreeze until the battery had worn completely down. When the last symptom occurred a second time yesterday during the iPod event, I decided it was time for a new iPod and ordered my first nano.

For years, the nano seemed like a good idea, but it wasn't something that fit my needs. My music collection clocks in at a respectable 8GB, and it is growing. I have another 6GB of audiobooks, also growing, and at the time I purchased my iPod video I had another 8GB of TV shows and movies ripped from my DVDs. In the days before the iPhone and iPod touch, the iPod video was just a more practical device for those of us who weren't quite so new to the whole idea of a portable music player. Apple initially targeted the noobs with the iPod mini, and then followed with the iPod nano.

Now that's changed. If you really want to play video on a portable device, the iPhone or the iPod touch is the way to go. If you primarily want to listen to music, the nano is an excellent choice for an everyday iPod. 16GB is more than enough to cover many music collections, and if you need more capacity there is still the iPod classic or the larger iPod touch models. The current nano can fit my entire library of music and audiobooks, and leave some room for videos if I choose -- except I really don't want to squint at subtitles on a nano.

Meanwhile, Apple is also realizing that they need to change their marketing strategy for the nano. With more than 220 million iPods sold to date and a 73.8% marketshare, the general public is fully aware of the brand and most likely has an iPod. So, Apple is changing tactics and has decided to take on the Flip, a popular and inexpensive handheld video camera that is roughly the size, although thicker, of a nano. New ads promote the "fun" factor of the nano, but overall it's just a solid iPod.

We're splitting our look at the new nano into two parts. Today, we're taking a look at the device itself and a vast chunk of the new features. Tomorrow, we take an in-depth look at the iPod nano's flagship feature -- the video camera -- and see how well it holds up to both a Flip and an iPhone 3GS.
Continue reading Hands-on with the new iPod nano, part 1

TUAWHands-on with the new iPod nano, part 1 originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 11 Sep 2009 09:00:00 EST. We will have an in-depth look at the nano later today, as I'm actually headed out to the Apple Store to get one to replace my aging, dying iPod 5.5G.

[For those who are asking -- as far as we can tell from the spec, the iPod nano will not shoot still pictures, only video. We'll be able to confirm this later today.]
Thus far, we've seen the following price cuts. All prices given are in USD:

iPod nano is now $129 for 8GB and $149 for 16GB.

iPod classic is now $229.

iPod touch is now $189 for 8GB, $249 for 16GB and $279 for 32GB.

There is no change to the price of the iPod shuffle.

These changes haven't completely gone through the site yet. As seen in the screen capture, some parts of the site still list the iPods at their old price.

Thanks to Scott and Max for the tip!
TUAWApple quietly cutting iPod prices ahead of event originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 09 Sep 2009 05:30:00 EST. We've already speculated about it once, but Yoko's words caused the Twitter feeds to immediately jump alive with fevered speculation that maybe, just maybe, tomorrow's finally the day.

I'm with Steve Sande.
Alan over with iPhoneXpert.com sent us in a tip on getting your Logitech mouse to work again after installing Snow Leopard. I didn't get a chance to try this out until my copy of Snow Leopard arrived last night. My keyboard/mouse combo of choice is the Logitech Wave Cordless Desktop (a fantastic combo that is well-suited for Mac users), and the OS upgrade did break the specialized configuration set up for them.

Logitech has not updated its drivers -- usually bundled with its Logitech Control Center application -- for Snow Leopard yet, and an upgrade to the software will take some time, Alan reports. In the meantime, you can work around this issue by doing the following:

Re-download Logitech Control Center 3.0 if you do not still have the installation package on your machine.

Unzip the download, then right-click on the installer package. Select "Show All Contents."

Navigate through the package to the Contents folder, then the Resources folder. There, you'll find the Logitech Control Center.mkpg. Double-click on it and install it.

Once your system has rebooted, you'll find that you regain full access to customizing your Logitech mouse (and it works for keyboards as well.) It even carried over all of my customized keyboard button settings from Leopard, so you shouldn't have to go through much hassle to reconfigure your equipment. The only thing I had to readjust was the scroll speed on my mouse.

If you have Exposé as one of your mouse/keyboard button settings, copy (do not move) the Expose.app file from /Applications/Utilities to the /Applications folder. Then Exposé will work properly again.

Thanks for the tip, Alan!
TUAWSnow Leopard: Get your Logitech mouse & keyboard working again originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 01 Sep 2009 16:00:00 EST.
Those wanting to be in the program are asked to submit how they best use The Hit List in their daily routine. From those entries, 10 people will be selected for the beta. Full rules are disclosed on Potion Factory's Web site. All entries must be received before September 21.

The iPhone version of The Hit List comes not a moment too soon. As indicated by the software's Google Group, users who adopted the program over the past year were migrating back to other GTD applications, such as Things, due to the lack of an iPhone app. As a fan of The Hit List, I was doing my best to hold out and see if an iPhone app would come along. I'm very happy not to be disappointed.

TUAWPotion Factory seeking beta testers for The Hit List iPhone originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 01 Sep 2009 15:00:00 EST. There's a notebook for that.

App Sketchbook is a pretty nifty notebook for iPhone developers who want to sketch out their products out on paper as part of the brainstorming process. App Sketchbook has three pre-drawn, full-sized iPhone templates per page with ruled lines beneath for notes. A pixel ruler runs alongside the template. You can use them in conjunction with iPhone UI stencils to get your ideas down on paper.

The App Sketchbook is a wire-bound notebook with 100 double-sided pages. It costs $<strike>12.95</strike>USD.

Edit (1:30 PST): Apparently make that $16.95USD as apparently the Web site updated right around the time I made my original post. It's been traumatic for some, having a psychological effect similar to Pluto losing its status as a full-fledged planet.

A great post over at MacFixIt explains the math about determining a file size -- and how the folks at Apple decided to follow the definitions of a "gigabyte," "kilobyte" and "megabyte" as they are commonly used in English (or, put a different way, just like in the metric system). So, a kilobyte is actually 1,000 bytes, and "officially" has been since 1999. Technically, the word for a 1,024-byte chunk of data is a kibibyte. Having kilo-, mega- and giga- SI prefixes refer to powers-of-10 in almost all realms, and powers-of-2 in information technology, was apparently becoming too confusing.

What does that mean in the real world? MacFixIt sums it up best:

"For all intents and purposes it means absolutely nothing! It does not change anything in how the computer runs, or how efficient it is at storing items on the drive. It has not compressed any of your data or somehow altered it to 'free up' any more space. Rather, it just means that everything will be reported as being slightly larger than [it] used to be, with the amount of difference depending on the prefix being used (the larger the prefix, the greater the percent difference)."

It's not a new issue at all for people dealing with changing clothing sizes, especially for women. What used to be a size 12 back in the 1950s is considered a size 6 today. And a kilobyte weighing in at 1,024 bytes yesterday is now 1,000 bytes today.

It's worth noting that you will see different file sizes reported when moving items between Snow Leopard and earlier systems, and the amount of free space on removable drives will appear to fluctuate -- but byte for byte, you've got the same amount of space in each case.

The Telegraph from the UK reports (via Paid Content) that after more than a month in limbo, the music-streaming app Spotify for the iPhone has been approved. Spotify is to Europe what Rhapsody is to the U.S. -- and we even took a look at Rhapsody's iPhone offering just a couple days ago. Spotify will allow access to the service's full catalog from the iPhone, create playlists from it -- and allow offline use of those playlists. The YouTube video above gives insight into exactly how the app works. It is available for paid subscribers only. A subscription costs £9.99 per month or £119.88 per year.

The approval of Spotify certainly opens the door for Rhapsody's app and other potential software that allows duplication of iPhone functions -- or it could be yanked ala Google.

TUAWApple approves Spotify app originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 27 Aug 2009 17:50:00 EST.
NPR News app was developed by Bottle Rocket Apps, the same folks who brought us Gas Buddy and a number of other well-executed iPhone apps. And, NPR News does not disappoint.

When you open the app, you're presented with a layout similar to other news apps. You have top stories, more offerings beyond that, and then a newscast where you can listen to a brief update of the top news of the hour. Along the bottom is a toolbar toggling among news, NPR's programs, a comprehensive listing of NPR stations nationwide with the ability to listen to your station of choice. For that, I tried out WUAL -- broadcast from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama -- my alma mater. The stream loaded quickly and I was listening to WUAL from my iPhone at a Barnes & Noble in Phoenix, Arizona. Pretty sweet. It's one of the things that I loved from Public Radio Player, and I'm glad to see this feature on the official app as well.

Under the Programs heading, you can add stories to a playlist or be taken to its podcast listing in the iTunes Music Store except for programs where you can select individual stories rather than the overall broadcast. If a program is currently airing in your local area while you're perusing the offerings, tap on the "Select Station" icon to pick a station to listen live. While in both program or station mode, the menu expands to expose a volume control if you tap on the arrow right above the time indicator.

Other than the lack of some programs, the only other big drawback to NPR News is the inability to scrub back and forth in a program. It's especially hindering if you have to stop the program for any reason because you'll have to go all the way back to the beginning.

NPR News is a free download and definitely worth checking out.
Edit (7:55 AM PDT): Some programs such as "Marketplace" aren't available because they are not produced by National Public Radio, according to Andy Carvin with NPR in our comments. These programs are available when you tune into a station live, but are not listed under the NPR programs section. He also added that scrubbing and sharing features will come in the 1.1 edition of the app. Thanks for the clarification, Andy!
The Mac OS X 10.5.8 update is now available through Software Update. Among the listed features are resolution for compatibility issues when joining AirPort networks, disappearing monitor resolutions in System Preferences, and Bluetooth reliability.

The update will also upgrade Safari to version 4.0.2, though I'm not sure if that includes those of us still on Safari 3 (I'll find out in a moment!) There are a number of other reliability and compatibility tweaks that are listed here. Security features are available here.

The update is not available through Apple's download site as of yet.

Edit (1:55 PT): I can confirm that this update does upgrade those of you still on Safari 3, like I was, to Safari 4.0.2. The combo update is also now available.

TUAWMac OS X 10.5.8 available through Software Update originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 05 Aug 2009 16:25:00 EST. In a press release, Steve Jobs said the following: "Unfortunately, as Google enters more of Apple's core businesses, with Android and now Chrome OS, Eric's effectiveness as an Apple Board member will be significantly diminished, since he will have to recuse himself from even larger portions of our meetings due to potential conflicts of interest. Therefore, we have mutually decided that now is the right time for Eric to resign his position on Apple's Board."

Do you think Schmidt stepping down had anything to do with the events of last week? Or, like our own Sang Tang suggested three weeks ago, was this a predictable consequence of Google's move into the OS space with Chrome and continuing competition between iPhone and Android? The California store will be in The Shops at Mission Viejo, a complex that already has an Apple Store. The Arizona store, according to the Associated Press, will be located in Scottsdale Fashion Square (shown at right), a little less than nine miles from Scottsdale Quarter, where Apple opened its fifth Phoenix-metro store last month.

"Hurray," I thought sarcastically after hearing about the Scottsdale store. "Just what I always wanted in my city -- a Microsoft store."

It's not surprising why these two locations were chosen. There's a lot of money in both areas, and a lot of existing Apple stores. It would be a notch in Microsoft's belt to draw traffic away from these highly penetrated areas.

I've already told my fellow TUAW comrades that I'm willing to brave visiting the store when it opens, just to see how it compares to its Apple counterparts. I've already asked for hazard pay. But, after, I think I may just need to stop by my local Apple store to appreciate the guys who drove Microsoft to do this in the first place.
TUAWFirst two Microsoft stores pretty close to Apple counterparts originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 30 Jul 2009 06:00:00 EST. But, there are a few holes and the program certainly doesn't do everything.

Basic layout
When you launch the iDisk app, you'll see most of folders that you normally have access to in your iDisk, plus any other folders that you might have created. What you won't see are the Backup, Sites, Software and Web folders that are normally in your iDisk. You can access these folders by enabling them through the software settings. Pressing the edit button will allow you to delete any user-made folders you've added to iDisk, but you can't create new folders.

Along the bottom are buttons for the iDisk itself, recent files viewed, files that you've chosen to share and public folders you've subscribed to. The settings screen is pretty basic, but leads to one of the gems of this piece of software -- an extremely documented help section that goes over every aspect of the app.
No, really, they're not kidding. The supposed netbook, which appears to be an iPod touch on steroids, is part of Apple's 2010 lineup, AppleInsider claims. Most of the article details the ebb and flow of stories regarding an Apple tablet for the past four years.

Will there finally be an iTablet? We're not quite sure. Like the rest of you, we'll have to wait and see what 2010 brings. As discussed around the TUAW water cooler today, there are so many similar devices now on the market that Apple is perfectly poised to make a grand entrance and revolutionize the industry -- just like with cell phones. As pointed out, "2010" could easily translate into October 2009 or December 21, 2012.

Part of me wants to check with Chicken Little to see if the sky is falling. It seemed somewhat far-fetched -- after losing the prototype, Danyong supposedly had his apartment illegally searched, and he was reportedly treated roughly by Foxconn security personnel.

But on Tuesday, Apple released a statement to CNET acknowledging Danyong's death without providing any additional details. "We are saddened by the tragic loss of this young employee, and we are awaiting results of the investigations into his death," Kristin Huguet told CNET. "We require our suppliers to treat all workers with dignity and respect."

This is not the first time that Foxconn's treatment of its employees has come into the spotlight. In 2006, Chinese reporters alleged that the company was not following labor laws, and the company subsequently admitted it. Apple's investigation at the time revealed some issues, but found the company mostly in compliance with its supplier responsibility standards.

There is incredible pressure from suppliers to retain business from high-profile companies -- like Apple -- who not only attract a lot of money, but prestige as well. Knowing how highly Apple values secrecy in the product development process, manufacturing concerns fear the loss of business if a leak can be pinned on them. For an NSFW but surprisingly insightful take on the tragedy, take a look at today's post from Fake Steve Jobs (Dan Lyons).

As reported in the Wall Street Journal, Chinese media is blaming Foxconn's management for Danyong's death. Given the information available, however, it does not appear that Apple was directly involved in this case. The case has been handed over to Chinese police for further investigation.

TUAWDeath of Foxconn worker puts supplier back in spotlight originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 22 Jul 2009 18:30:00 EST.
Etsy seller pixelthis has turned the panels of retired Macs into clocks. pixelthis has already sold one clock made from the side of a G3. The seller currently has a clock made from the side panel of a G4 for $59USD and from the front cover of a G4 for $57USD. There are other unique clocks including those made from hard drives, circuitboards, bicycle wheels and old records.

--

If you want to have a hot and steamy exchange with your sweetheart via AIM on the iPhone, you might want to think again -- if you have an unlocked <strike>or jailbroken</strike> phone.

CrunchGear reports that Till Schadde with Equinux has discovered an iPhone bug where AIM messages could be sent to random people without you even knowing it. Schadde discovered this when he was notified that a message he had sent to his iPhone version of AIM got intercepted by someone else. That person proceeded to contact Schaddle, sharing the screenshot shown at right with him. Schadde posted the screenshot and detailed the bug on Twitter after testing it once more from his computer.

The bug is being blamed on iPhone 3.0's push notification and seems to be limited to unlocked/<strike>jailbroken</strike> iPhones at the moment.

Edit (12:20 PT): Schadde has tweeted that he was contacted by AOL via phone this morning, and they are currently investigating the issue.

[Via CrunchGear]

TUAWiPhone push on unlocked phones sends AIM message to unintended recipients originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 21 Jul 2009 10:15:00 EST.
Daisy Disk is the perfect example of one of those tools that should be built right into OS X.

It's the latest in disk visualization utilities -- software that scans your hard drive and lets you know which files are being hard drive hogs (in my case, World of Warcraft - no big surprise there). But, it's the added features that turn this from basic to "wow, why didn't Apple develop something like this?"

Once you initiate the software, you'll see a list of mounted drives on your network that you can scan. I scanned my main drive. It took less than four minutes for it to go through the 120GB drive and display everything in a circular graphic that does remind you of a daisy wheel.

Each section of your drive is color-coded for its specific purpose. The closest parts to the center of the graphic are the root levels. Going further out will net you very specific details on file sizes. Clicking on one section move it to the forefront and let you see everything on that level. When you get down to the files themselves, tap the space bar to preview the file. Then, right click to expose those files in the Finder, then do what you wish with them. Then, click on the inner circle to go back out to the level above. For smaller files and folders, it's better to use the list on the side rather than try to pick things out of the wheel.

Doing this enabled me to find large files that I hadn't seen in years, including a folder of old backups from 2006 that got carried over from my iBook. Deleting those netted me 7GB of space. The only feature really not working properly is the preview portion. When I tried playing .M4V video sources, I was rewarded with a grey screen. Regular .AVIs were fine.

DaisyDisk costs $19.95USD and requires OS X 10.5 or higher. You can do a full-featured download for free, which gives you a great taste of what it has to offer. For those wanting the same sort of tools, but for free, give OmniDiskSweeper or GrandPerspective a try.

TUAWEasy visualization with Daisy Disk originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 14 Jul 2009 08:00:00 EST. The original tutorial, written by Brandon Trebitowski, was apparently compiled and submitted by Peter Sheen of BlaBlaIncTech and placed on sale for $.99USD on iTunes in late May.

Trebitowski revealed the theft through iCodeBlog yesterday, and Jonathan Siegel got in touch with us regarding the situation. As response has gotten out through iCodeBlog, there has been a backlash through both BlaBlaIncTech's site and the App Store. As a result, around 4:45 Pacific Time, the game was pulled from iTunes.

In an attempt to contact someone from BlaBlaIncTech, I headed over to the site to find no contact information except for a support chat that was spammed with nearly 15,000 comments regarding the theft. While I was writing up this post, BlaBlaIncTech removed the link to its guestbook from the front page of the site. Ten minutes later, the game was gone from the App Store. Ten minutes after that, all mention of iTennis was gone from BlaBlaIncTech's site.

TUAWLifted tutorial code winds up in $0.99 App Store tennis game originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 09 Jul 2009 20:45:00 EST.

Flexibits has just released Cameras, an application designed to manage multiple camera hookups on your Mac. With Cameras, you can direct which programs launch when you connect any number of photo-related devices to your computer; including digital cameras, the iPhone or a digital media reader.

Cameras installs a preference pane in System Preferences. The first time you connect a new device to your Mac and start to sync it, the device will show up in the preference panel. From there, you can choose what that individual camera does when connected. It's a simple, great application for managing different cameras and keeps unwanted programs from opening when you connect them and works well when multiple devices are developed.

Cameras is a free download and requires OS X. 10.4.11 or later.

TUAWManage multiple cameras with Cameras originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 07 Jul 2009 18:30:00 EST. At first, I wanted to think it was my phone. But, my iPhone 3G wasn't even 90 days old at the time of the observation and I'd been able to keep it on standby for several days before it needed a charge. Now, I could barely make it through a 10-hour workday before rushing out to the car to hook it up to a power source.

Aaron Vronko of RapidRepair says that this isn't an isolated incident. The iPhone 3G may now deplete its energy supply in roughly two hours, and the first generation iPhone lasts less than a day. Vronko tells Macworld that the cause is most likely push notification placing a drain on the battery's reserves. The issue has also led to complaints on Apple's support forums.

I've definitely noticed the difference. If I leave myself logged into BeeJive IM while I'm at work, my phone drains much faster than it does if I'm logged out. Regular push mail notification from MobileMe doesn't affect the battery level all that much, even with the high volume of e-mail I receive through TUAW. So, to save on the battery for now, I'm avoiding the push applications as much as I can if I don't have a charger within reach.

Vronko believes that the 3.1 release will solve the battery issues.

It's not the only visual tweak to MobileMe. The Settings icon has received a refresh, and Mail has been changed to look more like its desktop counterpart, showing the count of unread items next to their respective folders.

A look at the status history for MobileMe shows that maintenance was performed late last night on the web apps, resulting in the new look throughout the site. Other changes to MobileMe include:

The Help menu is now accessible from the toolbar.

Mail forwarding and replies now retain original formatting.

All messages on MobileMe can now be searched from the iPhone or iPod Touch.

Automatic album creation from the iPhone or iPod Touch with version 3.0 software.

iPhone 3GS users can publish video to MobileMe.

iPhone contacts maintain ringtone associations after syncing with MobileMe.

Option to merge contacts and calendars on first sync.

Turning off sync will enable users to still keep a copy of their data on their device rather than wiping it.

Not long after I bought my first personal Mac in late 2004, I stumbled across an article that mentioned Ulysses, a text editor geared toward creative writers -- essentially the marriage between a word processor and project management software. It allows you to have all documents within a writing project at your grasp. As a journalist and author, Ulysses was a dream come true, but expensive. Costing more than $100 at the time, it didn't fit into a journalist's salary.

I wound up using CopyWrite for a time and was fairly satisfied with it until I read in a forum that people were having luck with a program which, at the time, was called Scrivener Gold. I gave the free beta a try and was blown away by the program's potential. When the full-fledged release of Scrivener came out in early 2007, I bought a license as a birthday gift for myself.

Scrivener pulls all the things needed for a complete writing project -- be it writing a script, novel, research paper or newspaper/blog articles -- together in one location and has so many features that even after nearly three years of use, I don't think I've fully explored all that it has to offer. I recently started work on writing my first graphic novel, and have really gotten the chance to flex Scrivener's muscles.

TUAWFriday Favorite: Scrivener originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 26 Jun 2009 18:00:00 EST.
Mel gave you the instructions for how to set it up... but dear reader, we're going to go in-depth into the features of using MobileMe's Find My iPhone to see how well it works in locating and securing your phone from a remote location -- including performing a voluntary wipe.

Locating where your phone is via map
When you bring up the Find My iPhone page in MobileMe, the first thing you will see is a map giving the approximate location of your phone. As indicated above, my phone is somewhere inside of my apartment. Because the map is powered by Google, you can toggle it among plain map, satellite, and hybrid views of the location. However, the feature won't give off an exact address. So, if you happened to leave your phone inside of a shopping center complex, you'll still have to visit each store to track down the phone.

Read on for more into Find My iPhone's features ...
Continue reading Find My iPhone: If only I could find myself so easily ...

TUAWFind My iPhone: If only I could find myself so easily ... originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 17 Jun 2009 23:30:00 EST.
