TUAW reader Vince Patton provided us with several links to videos that he's uploading to YouTube. Patton's father had saved a VHS tape of a talk made by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak to the Denver Apple Pi computer club at the Colorado School of Mines on October 4, 1984, which Vince uncovered and is digitizing, cleaning up and uploading to YouTube for posterity.

Among the gems on Patton's YouTube channel is Woz leading the attendees in the "Pledge of Apple Allegiance," which you can watch below. Another fascinating bit shows Randy Wigginton, Apple employee No. 6 and a key member of the original Macintosh team, telling the story of how the Finder software couldn't even copy a disk just four hours before the deadline for shipping the initial Mac software.

Many thanks to Patton for doing such an incredible job of preserving these wonderful pieces of Apple history.

Hey, it's Friday! Besides Tim Cook going on a media tour recently there's not much going on, so let's reminisce. I grew up with an Apple II and this video playlist of old games for the venerable platform had me watching in awe as someone with more skill than I deftly played through games like Aztec and Castle Wolfenstein.

To this day those creepy, scratchy Nazi guard voices haunt me. To cleanse your palate, try some lemonade.

And below is a video of the Computer Chronicles talking about the "upcoming" Apple IIc and IIgs. Good times, great oldies.

Besides current content, his channel is full of videos featuring his 1984 Macintosh 128K. He has a quick tutorial from earlier this year that showcases MacPaint and a more recent video of an Iron Man design created on a Starkintosh with StarkPaint.

The Next Web has a fascinating link to a video documentary about Steve Jobs's time at NeXT that gives you some further insight into how he worked, and his determined and sometime volatile personality.

The NeXT episode was filmed by John Nathan for a TV series called Entrepreneurs produced by WETA in Washington D.C.

Some of the most interesting sections are Jobs pressing Joanna Hoffman at the 11 minute mark. Hoffman was one of the original members of the Mac team. His interaction with staff about delays in shipping at 15:33 is also a peek into the Steve Jobs worldview. You can watch the video clip below.

Jobs introduced the NeXT computer in 1988 after he left Apple. In 1996 Apple bought NeXT, Jobs returned to Apple, and the rest, as they say, is history.

The Onion, one of our favorite sources for fake news, has done a talking heads analysis of whether the unemployed should buy Apple computers. In typical Onion fashion, they miss the point -- on purpose.

The consensus? Of course the unemployed should buy Apples! You can do graphic design and look cool at Starbucks. The only person with a semi-reasonable point winds up getting tossed off the show for knowing nothing about the problem.

As one analyst mentioned: "I didn't know that we'd be drinking the Apple Kool-Aid here." For a good dose of said Kool-Aid, check out the video either on the free Onion app, or on the next page.

Continue reading Should unemployed Americans buy Apple gear?

According to TwinCities.com, Robert Stephens, resident of Minneapolis and co-founder of Geek Squad (now owned by Best Buy), was driving to work when he witnessed a rather large gas explosion. Without hesitation, Stephens grabbed his iPhone 4 and started recording the event whilst driving towards it, "...to see if anyone had dialed 911 yet."

Once Stephens had captured the source of the explosion, he drove to a nearby parking lot, transferred the footage from his iPhone to his iPad 2 (we recently covered how to do this using Apple's USB Camera Connection Kit), edited the footage, added a map, subtitle and voiceover describing the incident and finally uploaded the film to YouTube and iReport. Stephens then tweeted (with a few stills) permission for others (including the media) to use the footage, and before long, his breaking news was getting coverage on CNN and MSNBC.

Stephens says, "It was iPhone to connection kit to iPad to iMovie to CNN," apparently all within around four minutes.

According to Stephens, had this all occurred prior to the release of the iPad 2, he would simply have uploaded the raw footage from his iPhone, but since he had the iPad 2, he was able to do all the editing using Apple's new iMovie app for the iPad.

Stephens admits he's no journalist, but thanks to the the iPhone and iPad (and iMovie) he was able to make a rather slick "citizen-journalism" report with a professionalism akin to the pros.

Check out the full video after the break.

When we posted the banned iPad 2 video, a number of commenters wrote about a funnier one. Let's see if you think they're right. This parody introduction of the iPad 2 comes from dandobi and contains some salty language which is definitely not workplace friendly. It answers the burning questions of how to pick a song for an iPad 2 commercial, why the Smart Cover isn't called the iCover and what all this has to do with Wolverine.

Take a gander after the break and let us know if you think this one is better than the previous instance.

Last night on the Colbert Report, Stephen was beside himself with anticipation for the iPad 2. A desperate Colbert complains that Apple wouldn't send him one "through the TV," despite having the technology. After all, Colbert notes, its A5 Dual Core Processor allows the iPad 2 to "Not run Flash nine times faster."

You'll find the video after the break. Take a look and get ready to chuckle.

With all the buzz of anticipation of the iPad2 expected release on March 2nd I thought it would be fun to put up a couple of videos circulating the Internets on just what to expect.

The first one by Exkild is a full and detailed explanation of all the new magical features of the new 27" device. My favorite part of this 6:45 tour is expaining the new features in iTunes which will automatically download good music, delete bad music and if it finds a song by Justin Bieber, it self-destructs.

The second one is a 1:45 action movie opus made by Evan Larimore, a guy who is really into movies. A huge iPad2 with the eye of HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey descends from space and wreaks havoc in the hand-held style of Cloverfield.

Take a look. They're bound to give you a chuckle or two.

Continue reading The silly season: Two fun, fan-made videos of the iPad 2

The silly season: Two fun, fan-made videos of the iPad 2 originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Fri, 25 Feb 2011 18:30:00 EST. Yes, back before Apple and Verizon became best buddies who worked together for years to create the ideal iPhone experience for VZW customers, Verizon was aiming for the jugular with the "There's a Map For That" and "Misfit Toys" ads poo-poohing AT&T's network coverage. In fact, things got so tense that AT&T and Verizon sued each other over the claims in those blue and red ads.

Now that everyone's friends again, we've pointed out the fact that Verizon's version of the iPhone, like all the other phones on its CDMA network, will not support simultaneous voice and data; this despite the rumors from last summer that the carrier would roll out VoRA technology to do exactly that. More than a few readers and Twitter followers have said "Who cares? I don't use simultaneous voice and data, and I can't see why it matters."

The answer to "who cares," at least if you go back to late 2009 and the VZW/AT&T caterwauling, is Apple's marketing team. Let's set the Wayback Machine to this delightful iPhone ad, visible in the continuation of this post, and think about sending email while we chat and ordering flowers during a call. Yes, apparently those who cannot remember the past actually are doomed to repeat it.

Continue reading Simultaneous voice and data: there was an ad for that

Simultaneous voice and data: there was an ad for that originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Tue, 11 Jan 2011 15:00:00 EST. The above video shows him painting a portrait of none other than Steve Wozniak, which the Apple founder has started using as his Facebook profile picture. Newman sat with Woz for 3 hours creating the portrait entirely on an iPad, and Wozniak reportedly thinks this is the best portrait of him ever created.

The movie shares Newman's process as he created the portrait. You can see that the very first brush strokes were actually the artist spelling out "Woz" over and over. After that, Newman sketched in huge patches of color and shape. As the process continued, he layered additional touches of color, refined the shapes and added details. We especially like the box of Dots candy to Wozniak's left -- nice touch. Newman's got a great eye for detail, and a project like this really shows off the creative possibilities of Apple's magical and revolutionary device.

Today's example comes from TUAW reader and Duke University sociology professor Kieran Healy, who kept the PowerBook 145B that helped him throughout grad school. As he says in the blog post accompanying the video (after the break), "despite being such a seemingly underpowered dinosaur, it (the Powerbook) nevertheless cold-booted faster than any computer I've owned since." That "dinosaur" had a 25 MHz 68030 processor, 4MB of RAM, and a huge (for the time) 40MB hard disk drive.

Healy recent purchased an 11" MacBook Air, which he put to the test versus the aging speedster. The Air won handily in the bootup race, loading OS X and even a few applications (I saw 1Password appearing on the Air's screen) before the PowerBook finished loading all of those extensions. Enjoy the video, and especially the final shot comparing the size of the two laptops.

Continue reading MacBook Air versus PowerBook 145B video smackdown

MacBook Air versus PowerBook 145B video smackdown originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Thu, 09 Dec 2010 14:20:00 EST. In this video (check it out after the break), Steve Jobs gives a demonstration of a NeXT computer. You'll remember that Steve formed NeXT in 1995 after being ousted from Apple. Years later, in 1996, Apple purchased NeXT after Steve's return. Much of the current Mac OS X system is built on the OPENSTEP foundation.

You needn't look too closely to see the predecessors of Mac OS X, like the dock, the services menu, the home directory and windows that display their contents while being dragged. It's also interesting to hear Steve put the Mac down on a couple of occasions. For a nice illustration of how NeXT features became a part of Mac OS X, look here.

Looking at this, one could argue that Steve's dismissal from Apple was the best thing that happened to the Mac OS.

Over the holiday weekend, we noted that the Glif is now available for ordering (although it's not shipping quite yet). The iPhone 4 stand / tripod mount gadget is a triple threat: functional, attractively designed and the owner of a great backstory.

The Glif guys wanted to share the experience of producing their product, so they released a short video covering the injection molding process out in South Dakota. If you're a fan of the Science Channel's hypnotic How It's Made show, you'll dig this clip. It's embedded in the second half of this post.

Again, congratulations to team Glif on taking their idea from the napkin stage to physical realization.

Thanks to Dustin for the heads-up.

Continue reading Found Footage: Injection molding process for the Glif

Found Footage: Injection molding process for the Glif originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Tue, 30 Nov 2010 06:00:00 EST.
Watching Richard tear apart his baby was a bit unnerving to me. I recall opening an iMac G5 about five years ago to swap out a noisy power supply and fan assembly, and I still shudder to think about that.

Richard was armed with the proper tools: a set of Torx screwdrivers, tweezers, a pair of suction cups for removing the glass screen and the restore disc for Mac OS X. He also had a handy tool nearby in the form of an iFixit teardown guide for the iMac displayed on his iPad.

Richard noted that boot times are almost three times as fast for the iMac after the heart transplant, and the video (after the break) shows it launching in just over 20 seconds. That's still not enough to make me take apart my iMac. Enjoy the video, if you can stand to watch that beautiful iMac being dissected.

For all you trivia buffs who may not know the real story, TV Deck has posted a short video where the Woz explains exactly how Apple got its name. An amazing thing is that Steve Wozniak didn't really know himself until recently. The quality of the video isn't the best, but for all you completists, this is today's geeky cocktail party conversation starter.
A sort of 3D may be coming to an iPhone or iPod touch near you through a new gadget using technology that was developed in 1842 called Pepper's Ghost. Jistsuro Mase, a Japanese artist has created i3DG which converts a 2D images into three layered images that are displayed on three planes using a snap on contraption containing three 45-degree mirrors. The images must be specially designed to be split into three parts, and i3DG then reconnects them for a near 3D effect that can be viewed without glasses. You've probably seen Pepper's Ghost if you've been to a Disney Park, since it's heavily used in The Haunted Mansion and the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror to make characters look like they are appearing out of nowhere.

In the picture above, for instance, the woman is on one screen, while the rest of the room's objects are situated on various other screens. Using see-through glass, all of the images combine into one image, which (if you were looking at it in real life) would then translate into 3D. The effect can be very impressive, as long as you understand that nothing can move from the front to the back since all there is to work with is three layers. The video after the break will show you just how good it can be under the right circumstances.
Update 11/30/10: It's a fake. Mashable reports Frank popped the question according to script, if Kasey didn't catch the ring they'd have tried again another day. It was an attempt to create a reproducible formula for making viral videos.

On October 24th, after a two year relationship, Frank decided to propose to his girlfriend Kasey in romantic Central Park, found in the heart of New York City. Lots of people have done this, but never as geeky. Frank got a bunch of techie friends together to pull off this one-take event. Employing musicians, playing Kasey's favorite song, a famous bridge, a rowboat, a bunch of iPhones running custom apps and a MacBook Pro to mix it all together, Frank popped the question.

The result was a big "Yes!" and a video that looks like it came out of the credits of Trainspotting. It's a fun three-minute watch which raises a question: what would have happened if Kasey didn't catch the ring?

Update: They would have tried again the next day.
