It's that special time of year when we celebrate our mothers (of course, if you ask Mom every day is Mother's Day), and Apple is cutting us a break! You can now get 20% off of iPhoto books when you use the promo code LoveMom at checkout.

This promo code is valid for iPhoto or Aperture users in the US and Canada and is good until May 11, 2008. Apple recommends that you order by April 30 for standard delivery and May 4 for express delivery so that you get your book in time for Mother's Day.

You can read more about this promotion on Apple's website.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Apple extends iPhoto book/calendar discounts

Filed under: iLife, Apple, Deals, Holidays
You may recall us posting about Apple's winter iPhoto promotion. This promotion provides 20% off of books and calendars. This promotion was set to expire on February 29, 2008; However, according to Macworld, Apple has extended this promotion until March 7 (giving you a couple extra days to stock up on calendars and photo books). A recent thread on the Apple Discussions board prompted Apple to extend the promotion due to errors that users were experiencing during checkout.

The codes for North American users are:

NAWinterBook08 for books

NAWinterCal08 for calendars

We haven't heard if this extended promotion applies to UK users or not, however, if you would like to try, the codes for the UK books / calendar are: EUWinterCal08 and EUWinterBook08.

[via Macworld]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

iPhoto 7.1.3 is ready to go

Fire up Software Update and you'll see iPhoto 7.1.3 which, according to Apple, "...Addresses issues with wire-bound books and cards." While you should be able to turn this off (in the preferences of the Image Capture application), what if you still want iPhoto (or Aperture, Lightroom, etc.) to launch when you plug in your camera or memory card? Capitalizing on the fact that Image Capture lets you choose any application to run automatically, Sam Stephenson over at 37signals has cooked up a fancy AppleScript to do just this. Once set up it looks to see what you've plugged it; if it's your camera it will launch iPhoto, etc.; if it's your iPhone it won't. The script is slightly complicated and must be customized for your particular camera model, but if you want the convenience of auto-launching your image management application for your camera, without the annoyance of the iPhone, it's worth a look.

[via Daring Fireball]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

iLife '08 Support update available

Filed under: iLife, Software Update, Apple
Just in time for Aperture 2, a minor support update has just been issued for iLife '08.
Demonstrate martial arts forms (Record with a video camera, export to frames with Quicktime Pro, import into iPhoto, make a flip book)

There's more, of course.
In the transition from iLife '06 to '08, one of the shifts in iPhoto functionality was the deprecation of photocasts in favor of .Mac web galleries. Sure, your friends and family can still subscribe to an RSS feed of your pictures (and what kind of loving grandparent doesn't want a newsfeed full of Halloween costumes and messy-breakfast snapshots?), but despite the enhanced gallery views in '08, some key features didn't roll forward -- in particular, while '06 photocasts could include original size, full-res picture files for downloaders, '08 web galleries downsized and/or recompressed most photos. Some may not have noticed the degradation in quality, but for the photo purists, including my colleague Jeff L., this was not an improvement.

Today Jeff came by my desk practically jumping for joy. Tucked away in yesterday's iPhoto update to 7.1.2, where you'd least expect it, is a slender button on the web gallery dialog box: "Show Advanced," and we all know that means good things for Jeff and his poor pictures. There are two new options in the Advanced section: a checkbox to hide the title of the gallery on your .Mac galleries page (handy for those who have a photography 'hobby,' nudge nudge say no more), and a choice between optimized and actual-size photos for downloading. Huzzah!

If you've got a web gallery that could benefit from higher-quality download files, try the new setting and let us know your results.

Thanks Jeff

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

iWeb 2.0.3 update

In addition to releasing the iWork update last night, the updated status on MacBook Air and Apple TV today; Apple just now issued an update for iWeb '08. This update is for iMovie '08 (version 7). Here's what Software Update tells us:

This update addresses issues when publishing movies to a .Mac Web Gallery, improves overall stability, and addresses a number of other minor issues.

I am personally looking forward to this update, as I have experienced some bugs in the user interface that has caused me to restart occasionally. You can download this update for iMovie 08 by visiting the Apple downloads website, or by checking Software Update.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

iPhoto books and calendar discounts

If you want to "cash-in" on all of those after holiday sales, look no further than your Mac's desktop. When he selected "Your shopping will be delivered on 07-11-2007 between 21:00 and 23:00" and tried to Create new iCal Event from that text, Leopard created a calendar event for July 11th, 2007.

So to check this out, I went ahead and mailed the same text. After receiving the letter, I then selected it and choose Create New iCal Event. Sure enough, it also created the July 11th date.

Next I popped over to International settings and selected the Formats tab. There I switched from using US date formats to UK ones. To do this, I selected United Kingdom from the Region: pop-up menu.

Upon returning to Mail, I once again created a new iCal event using the same letter. Well for those folks, a little birdy told me that the Quartz Composer file for this effect can be downloaded here (download link). Just pop it into your /Library/Compositions folder, restart iChat and it should be available as one of the video effects. This file was apparently taken from one of the earlier developer builds of Leopard.

If you want a different take on the same idea, there's also a fan made version over at Mac Rumors.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Pomoto 1.0.1 plays better with iPhoto

Filed under: iLife, Software, Cool tools, .Mac

Pomoto is basically a replacement for iPhoto's .Mac web albums, designed to take your iPhoto collection and put it on the web with as little trouble as possible. Like FlickrExport (although this is a separate app, of course, not a plugin), it looks like a pretty smooth way to get all the cool stuff in iPhoto out where everyone else can see it.

The latest version, 1.0.1, includes support for iPhoto 7 Smart Albums and Events, better "privatization" of private Albums, and "more robust photo loading," which I'll leave up to you to decide. Since Pomoto publishes your photos for you, it's really an app tagged into a subscription service, so it costs either $3 a month or $30 a year. If you really like the .Mac photo publishing features, but don't need all of .Mac, it's definitely worth checking out.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Another FlickrExport 3 sneak peek: photosets

Filed under: iLife, Software, Internet Tools
FlickrExport is one of my must have Mac apps. This little plugin for iPhoto, or Aperture, makes it a breeze to export photos from iPhoto/Aperture to Flickr. Getting your photos on Flickr is only part of the joys that FlickrExport offers up, it also makes tagging your photos very easy (and this is coming from a lazy tagger).

Fraser Speirs, the developer behind FlickrExport, has posted a sneak peek at Flickr Export 3 on the Connected Flow blog. This screencast shows off FlickrExport 3's advanced set creation abilities. I, for one, can't wait to get my hands on this version of FlickrExport as I make tons of sets on Flickr, and this will save me lots of time.

No shipping date has been announced for FlickrExport 3 and update details are not known, though you can get a license for FlickrExport 2 right now for iPhoto (£12), a lite version for Aperture (free), or Aperture (£12).

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Google Picasa Web Albums Uploader updated for iPhoto '08

The Mac folks over at Google have announced the release of an update to their Web Albums Uploaders for their online photo sharing site Picasa. The single download actually contains two packages. One is a plugin for iPhoto that adds compatibility with iPhoto '08 and automatic conversion of iPhoto keywords to Picasa tags. The other is a standalone drag-and-drop uploader application. In both cases, under the hood there are more substantial changes involving automatic updating and a new Picasa API. In any case, if you're a Mac Picasa user you'll want to check this out.

Update: Unfortunately, it looks like Google forgot to change the download link and it still points to version 1.0 instead of 1.1. The actual download can be found here.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

HACK: Enable adding calendar events on your iPod touch

Filed under: iLife, iPod Family, Hacks, How-tos

Hackers Nicholas "Drudge" Penree and Tony Hoyle have figured out an easy fix that allows you to add calendar events to your iPod touch. You'll need read/write access to your touch and a full jailbreak but once you do, all you need to do is add the following two lines to the N45AP.plist file inside your Core Services' SpringBoard app.

<key>editableUserData</key>

<true/>

The plist is found at
/System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/N45AP.plist

Update: Reader Andi notes that you need to put the editableUserData under "capabilities" not under "root" in the property list.

Update 2: If you'd rather use a text editor rather than the property list editor, convert the file to text-based xml. At the Mac command line, you can do this by issuing plutil -convert xml1 filename.plist. To convert back use binary1 instead of xml1.

%Gallery-8511%

Permalink | Email this | Comments

iWeb 2.0.2 is available

The folks at Apple have had a busy day. iWeb 2.0.2 is now available, with the following changes:

"This update to iWeb addresses issues with upgrading iWeb 1.x websites, and fixes some common publishing problems, and supports general compatibility issues."

I haven't experienced any issues with iWeb. Compatibility with layered Photoshop PSD files (and over 100 other file formats too), Core Image-driven editing, Automator actions, iSight and iLife integration and a heck of a lot more await, and it's certainly a compelling option given that a licence costs just $59.

If you're wanting to get a quick look at the features in Pixelmator (and our very own screencast didn't whet your appetite enough), then in conjunction with the launch of the app, well-known screencast producer Don McAllister of ScreenCasts Online has produced a brief screencast that takes a look at the basics of the application.

Pixelmator requires OS X 10.4 Tiger, with a Core Image-compatible graphics card recommended.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
