TUAW Liveblog of the Apple 'Back to the Mac' event

By now you've probably read our predictions for today's Apple event, and we're sure that you've dusted off your crystal ball as well and come up with your own good ideas about what we'll see and hear today. Now it's time for the TUAW gang to provide you with a play-by-play and commentary of what's going on at the event through our liveblog. For those of you who are working in offices where you're not allowed to watch streaming video, we'll give you a detailed report on what's happening, even if Apple is streaming the event (so far, they haven't announced that they are).

We'll also be entertaining your questions and tweeting highlights on Twitter. Follow us on @tuaw and @tuawlive, or send your questions to us via @ask_tuaw.

Will there be news of a revised MacBook Air? How about Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion?" Perhaps the focus might be on iWork '11 and iLife '11, or cloud-based storage and apps as part of a more cloud-based MobileMe. Maybe we'll see a fusion of iOS design elements into Mac OS X, or an App Store for Macs.

Regardless of the news that we hear in the next hour or two, it's sure to be interesting, controversial, and even (in some cases) frustrating. There may be devices that ship today, but some things we hear about might not make it from Cupertino for another year.

We have a guest blogger providing TUAW with content from the event today: Sam Levin from AppMinute, who joined me a few weeks ago on TUAW TV Live. TUAW coverage of today's 'Back to the Mac' event

It's Wednesday, October 20th, and that can only mean two things: it's my wife's birthday, and there's an Apple event going on today. TUAW won't be covering my spouse's 55th birthday, but we will have plenty of coverage of all the news that comes out of the "Back to the Mac" event.

As Dave noted earlier, we now expect a QuickTime stream to be available for the event, so you should be able to watch along with us.

We'll start our liveblog coverage at 9:45 AM PDT (12:45 PM EDT) today. TUAW editors and bloggers Victor Agreda, Mike Rose, Erica Sadun, and Dave Caolo are joining me to provide commentary and reports as the news comes through. Sam Levin from AppMinute is our man on the street at the event, keeping us posted with his take on what is happening as it's happening. As with all of our liveblogs, we welcome your comments and questions in the live chat.

At 12:30 PM PDT (3:30 PM EDT), Mike Rose and I will be hosting a special early edition of TUAW TV Live. We'll be discussing the announcements from the event and sharing our opinions, and you can join us in the chat.

Apple FY10 First Quarter results conference call liveblog

Apple announces its fiscal year 2010 first quarter results today at 5 PM ET / 2 PM PT, and TUAW will be liveblogging the event.
Apple's first quarter was the quarter ending December 31, 2009, including the always-important holiday buying season.

You can join in on the call several ways. First, you can listen in on the streaming audio from the event by opening www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/earningsq110/ in your favorite browser at the appointed time. Second, come back to TUAW at about 4:50 PM ET / 1:50 PM PT and sign into our liveblog tool CoverItLive to add your questions or comments.

Live chat tomorrow: Application Development for the (mythical) Apple Tablet

From a developer's point of view, what do these rumors mean? Is it enough to assume that App Store products will "just work" out of the box on a new device class? Will adherence to Apple's resolution independence design principles allow well-built iPhone applications to adapt to new window sizes? Or are there greater concerns of memory, processor, and the overall user experience that need to be taken into account?

On Friday, TUAW will chat with Craig Hockenberry and Daniel Jalkut. Hockenberry is the senior software engineer for the Iconfactory, a software and design house that ships both Macintosh and iPhone products. Jalkut, formerly of Apple, is the founder of Red Sweater Software (aka the "MarsEdit" people). Both Hockenberry and Jalkut bring multi-platform Apple development expertise to the table for our discussion of possible hardware directions and how developers can proactively prepare their place in a new market.

Join TUAW for Apple Q4 earnings call liveblog at 5 PM EDT today

Time flies when you're having fun -- it seems like it was only a few weeks ago that we were enjoying the Q3 earnings report from Apple, Inc.

Well, today the wizards of Cupertino are on the phone again with top Wall Street analysts to report how the company did during the fourth quarter (July - September, 2009). Many analysts are expecting Apple to continue its recession-defying high wire act, with an analyst poll by Thomson Reuters Financial showing an earnings forecast of US$1.42 per share. That's 13 percent over the same quarter a year ago, and higher than Apple's own forecast of US$1.18 - US$1.23 per share.

iPhone OS 3.1 adds new features and functionality

One of the first surprises out of today's Apple event, other than Steve Jobs appearing on stage again (!!!), was the announcement that iPhone OS 3.1 and iPod touch OS 3.1.1 were available. We're still waiting for the download to complete, so this won't be a hands-on review, but we do want you to know what the new features of 3.1 are:

Improved syncing for music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and photos
iTunes U content organization
Redeem iTunes Gift Cards, codes, and certificates in the App Store
Display available iTunes account credits in the App Store and iTunes Store
Save video from Mail and MMS into Camera Roll
Option to Save as new clip when trimming a video on iPhone 3GS
Better iPhone 3G Wi-Fi performance when Bluetooth is turned on
Remotely lock iPhone with passcode via MobileMe
Use Voice COntrol on iPhone 3GS with Bluetooth headsets
Paste phone numbers into the keypad
Option to use Home button to turn on accessibility features on iPhone 3GS
Warn when visiting fraudulent websites in Safari (anti-phishing)
Improved Exchange calendar syncing and invitation handling
Fixes issue that cause some app icons to display incorrectly

There's now also a App Store Genius function, which will recommend Apps based on your purchase history. The Genius of Apple also extends to iTunes, which will now create up to 12 playlists for you based on what's in your library. You can now purchase and download ringtones from your iPhone, and organize apps in iTunes.

Apple's security info page will be listing the security content of the OS updates shortly. The new versions include 10 security fixes, including patches for SMS vulnerabilities, Exchange passcode lock workarounds, and Unicode character spoofing flaws.

There's nothing quite as fun as an Apple earnings call!

Along with a lot of financial gobbledygook, disclaimers, and carefully-phrased "forward-looking statements", there are also pointed questions from top financial analysts. On occasion, Apple may even bring forth Steve Jobs to enliven the call.

Today is the day for Apple's 3rd quarter 2009 earnings call. Our very own Mike Rose will be leading the team on a liveblog of the event before ~~rushing off to~~ a Wednesday appearance on Fox Business News, where he holds the title of "The Unofficial Apple Analyst." You can also listen in on the festivities, as Apple will be streaming audio of the event.
