A new study released by Applifier says that word of mouth is still the number one way mobile game players find the games they like. That doesn't necessarily mean in-person discussion about mobile games, however, though 36 percent of users did report that hearing from a friend or family member was a major source of games, and 25 percent of users said actually seeing a friend or family member play a game was one way they found out about their favorites. However, 43 percent of users say reading user reviews was the main way they found what they liked to play.

Video is another big game pusher -- 70 percent of users polled by Applifier say that they watched online video about mobile games in the last week, and 45 percent of users said that watching the video had them downloading that same game right away.

Most mobile game players, according to Applifier, download up to five mobile games a month, which is just a little more than one per week. Those games are played for about three hours per week, though obviously that's spread out across the entire week, so most likely little bits here and there rather than three hours at a time. And 20 percent of users, said Applifier, can be classified as "sharers," which means they are more likely to download more games, play more often and for longer and convert to paying users. All interesting stuff. For all of the infrastructure for app discovery built by Apple and others, odds are that you're still hearing about your favorite iOS downloads from the people that you know best anyway.

On Wednesday, Apple sold its 50 billionth iOS app. TUAW was there keeping track of the excitement and monitoring the iTunes store. Many of our colleagues and readers used this contest as an opportunity to stock up on numerous free apps, to test and explore.

Were you one of them?

What apps did you download and which ones do you love? Here at TUAW, most of our choices were word of mouth -- Megan downloaded Moves while I gave the Target app a try. I managed to convince Steve Sande to pick up Enigma.

Sadly, none of us won.

What about you? Did you discover a really great app while trying to win the prize? Drop a note in the comments and share your discoveries. And take part in our little poll. We're curious as to how many times people "entered" with the intent of winning big.

The next time your Samsung Galaxy-toting friends try to annoy you, here's a piece of information you can throw back at them. According to a study published yesterday by investment bank Piper Jaffray, iPhones depreciate at less than half the rate of similar Android devices from Samsung.

Analyst Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray referred to the new index as "a pulse on what consumers are willing to pay for unsubsidized phones in the US." The index compares US eBay auction ending prices for the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II over a rolling eight weeks to create a trend on resale prices.

"The key takeaway from eight weeks of data is that the iPhone is holding slightly more of its value compared to the top two Galaxy phones," according to Munster. The iPhone 5's eBay auction ending value dropped about 11.2 percent in the last eight weeks, while the comparable Samsung Galaxy S III dropped 13.7 percent in value.

The iPhone 4S kept its value the best, dropping only 7 percent during the same time period. The Galaxy Note II did the worst job of retaining its value, dropping a full 15 percent in just eight weeks. Munster expects iPhone aftermarket prices to drop as the release of the next model of iPhone draws nearer.

Study: iPhone retains value better than top Galaxy models originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Wed, 15 May 2013 12:00:00 EST.

We'll find out how Apple's financial fortunes are faring a bit later this afternoon, but for now, there's a report out of The NPD Group showing that Apple now dominates home digital video the way it does the digital music market.

The numbers are staggering: Apple's iTunes Store had a 67 percent share of electronic sell-through (EST) for television shows in 2012. How big is that? The nearest competitor was Xbox Video with a 14 percent share of EST.

The stats were also in favor of Apple for feature-length movie downloads, with the company pulling in a 65 percent share of EST. Xbox Video and Amazon Instant video weren't even close in the competition, each having a 10 percent share.

While Apple's lead wasn't as incredible in the internet video-on-demand sector, iTunes still led the way with 45 percent of the market. Despite Amazon Instant Video's popularity, it has less than half of the movie rental traffic of Apple at just 18 percent.

Russ Crupnick, senior VP of industry analysis at NPD, believes that Apple's early moves in the market allowed the company to dominate the digital sales and rental markets for movies and that customer satisfaction is what's keeping the numbers high. Crupnick notes, "We've seen big-name entertainment retailers lose share, and even close, as their customer satisfaction metrics faded; however, that's clearly not the case with iTunes. Customers are quite happy with the store."

NPD Group: iTunes owns the internet video market originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Tue, 23 Apr 2013 14:30:00 EST. The MBP with Retina display has had a rougher time of things, however, than the standard-issue debutante. Screen ghosting, heat problems, battery deficiencies, and UI lags, this past year has been anything but magical for Apple's flagship business product.

What are your thoughts on the rMBP? Best thing Apple has ever made? Or a problematic product with growing pains? Join in this poll and then share your comments explaining your thoughts.

Make a little more room in the trophy case: the iPhone has topped J.D. Power and Associates' consumer satisfaction survey yet again in the category of wireless smartphones. For the ninth study in a row, Apple has earned the top numbers, scoring 855 on a survey that tracks issues like performance, ease of operation, physical design and various features. Overall smartphone numbers are up as well to around a score of 796, an increase of 22 points over last year. It's pretty easy to ascribe most of that satisfaction to Apple: the company's meteoric growth has definitely encouraged the smartphone market, and even its competitors are pushed to make better products thanks to the iPhone.

Elsewhere in J.D. Power's survey, the company found that despite this higher satisfaction, about two in ten customers are still experiencing software or hardware issues with their phones. Not surprisingly, smartphone users who use their phones a lot are more likely to recommend them to others: customers who spent more than 100 minutes a week on their phones are 14 percent more likely to recommend their specific model than those that spend less time. When you combine that with the fact that iPhone users tend to use their phones a lot more than other brands, it makes sense that so many iPhones come so highly recommended.

For the past 30 years, Fortune has compiled a list of the World's Most Admired Companies. This year, as with the previous five years, Apple took the top spot in the ranking.

The ranking is compiled from results of an annual poll of business executives asking them to identify the companies they most admire. Fortune Senior Editor-at-Large Adam Lashinsky notes that, "For some, the news will come as a surprise. Headlines of late have tended to portend Apple's demise... Corporate admiration, however, appears to outlast the fickle tastes of investors and consumers alike."

Following Apple in the ranking were Google and Amazon.com, followed by beverage providers Coca-Cola and Starbucks. IBM hit the sixth spot as most admired, with Southwest Airlines, Berkshire Hathaway, Walt Disney and FedEx rounding out the list.

The market for dedicated portable game consoles from Nintendo and Sony appears to be shrinking due to competition from iOS and Android tablets and smartphones. Data from IDC and App Annie shows that fourth-quarter 2012 consumer spending on game apps from the App Store and Google Play was greater than spending on those portable consoles.

In the Portable Gaming Report (PDF), the two companies noted that well over 20 billion games were downloaded across the mobile platforms in 2012, and that over a third of app downloads were games.

The report also pointed out a fascinating statistic -- in terms of total consumer spending on games, Nintendo and Apple were almost equal. That Apple could become a major player in gaming in less than five years since the App Store first opened its virtual doors is amazing, particularly when the Nintendo DS and its successors have been around since 2004.

One other key comment from the IDC / App Annie report was that purchases of dedicated game consoles appear to be highly seasonal, with 60 percent of spending in the fourth quarter of 2012 being done in December. Game app purchases, on the other hand, don't exhibit the seasonal variability of the dedicated units.

The folks at Chitika have just released the results of a study looking at iOS version distribution post-iOS 6.1.1. The numbers are quite amazing; all versions of iOS 6 (6.0, 6.1.0, 6.1.1) now account for 83.1 percent of all iOS traffic.

At this point, only about 12.2 percent of all iOS users are still on iOS 5, while approximately 5 percent of total iOS users are using earlier versions of iOS. Once again, this number points out the fragmentation that is rampant in the Android OS world.

Google's numbers indicate that only 42.6 percent of Android users are running devices on Android OS 4.0 ("Ice Cream Sandwich") or 4.1-4.2 ("Jelly Bean"). Android 4.0 hit the market on December 16, 2011, Android 4.1 on July 9, 2012, and Android 4.2 on November 13, 2012. iOS 6 has only been around since September 19, 2012 and has achieved about double the penetration of Android 4.x.

Chitika's chart shows another interesting statistic; iOS 6.1.1 achieved about 1.4 percent of all traffic in its first day of release. The chart uses traffic data gathered on February 11 (the release date of iOS 6.1.1) and 12, 2013.

Chitika: All versions of iOS 6 now account for 83.1% of iOS traffic originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Wed, 13 Feb 2013 15:45:00 EST. Normally as February and March roll around, our minds start drifting towards iPads and OS X. Until this past year, when Apple seemed to reset its iPad clock in October, we saw new hardware ticking by each Spring. Late Winter is also usually the time we hear the first meows of Apple's newest OS X cat.

	So what about this year?

With iPad shifting to pre-Christmas updates, will we see a refresh? And with Federighi spearheading a joint iOS/OS X restructuring, have we seen the last of the felines? Is it time for OS Xi? Will this be the year that Apple moves past traditional OS X and AppKit and introduces a grand unified operating system along the lines introduced by Steve Jobs in October 2011?

Over the past few years, Apple has been perched atop the list of the 20 most trusted companies for privacy. The list, published annually by the Ponemon Institute (link to PDF), is based on a survey in which participants are asked to name companies that they feel can protect the privacy of their personal information. This year, Apple is out of the top 20 in the 2012 Most Trusted Companies list.

It's not too far down, ranked at No. 21, but the company is quite a distance from the No. 8 ranking it achieved in 2009. In 2011, Apple was ranked in the 14th spot; now it is below Mozilla (makers of the Firefox browser) and sharing ground with Google and Facebook.

So what companies made it to the top of the tree? The most trusted companies were American Express, HP, Amazon, IBM, and the US Postal Service.

Apple has made some moves to improve user privacy. Apple Insider notes that Apple updated iOS last year to require user permission when apps tap into contact information. This happened in the wake of an incident in which the Path social networking app was found to be uploading address book data to its servers without permission.

Apple falls from the privacy trust tree originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Tue, 29 Jan 2013 12:00:00 EST.

According to Apple, "Pages '09 is both a streamlined word processor and an easy-to-use page layout application. It allows you to be a writer one minute and a designer the next, always with a perfect document in the works."

Pages '09 was last updated on December 4, 2012. It is a vital, active and very much alive product, even in the early days of 2013.

In the years before online distribution was practical, Apple operated in a world of CD and DVD distribution. Every year or two, they'd issue a new iLife or iWork release, appending the year to mark it out as a refreshed product.

Disc is dead. Isn't it time for Apple to drop the year branding? After all, they've already moved past that kind of version-specific issue with newer apps like iBooks Author. In its second release, iBooks Author 2 is promoted on Apple's site simply as "iBooks Author." No "2." The version is irrelevant.

What do you think? Should Apple walk away from its year branding? Drop your vote into this poll and then join in the comments with your thoughts.

All models of the iPhone accounted for 53.3 percent of all smartphone purchases in the US in the 12 weeks ending November 25, according to research from Kantar Worldpanel Comtech.

That's good news for Apple, as the figure is the highest it's ever been in the US, rising more than 5 percentage points from the 12-week figure from October. Android, at 41.9 percent, and RIM were the the losers in the US. The Windows Phone platform is now in third place, grabbing a little over 7 percent of all purchases in the study time period.

While the marketshare news is positive in the US, things aren't as nice for Apple in Europe. Android phones account for over 61 percent of all smartphones sold in Europe's top five markets, with Apple trailing drastically at just 25 percent. Developing markets are also iPhone-unfriendly. Android phones sucked up sales in both Brazil, with a 60.7 percent share of the smartphone market, and China at a whopping 72.2 percent.

While Apple is certainly selling the most tablets thanks to the wild popularity of the iPad and iPad mini, it did not receive the highest scores in a tablet satisfaction survey run by TechHive.

Surprisingly, Asus scored at or near the top of all satisfaction measurements for the Google Nexus 7 (image above) that it manufactures. Next in the rankings was Samsung, which earned high scores for its Galaxy Tab range of tablets.

Apple took third place with its tablets, earning top marks for speed, battery life and responsiveness of the touchscreens. iPads were also lauded for ease of use. Apple also received the top score for reliability, with only 4 percent of owners reporting any significant issue in the first two years of ownership. A full 12 percent of owners of other brand tablets experienced issues in the first two years.

While Apple ran a close third place in the tablet category, TechHive reports that the company took top honors in satisfaction rankings for laptops, desktops and smartphones.

Asus, Samsung top TechHive's tablet satisfaction survey originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Wed, 19 Dec 2012 13:00:00 EST.

A survey of over 1,000 U.S. consumers was published today by Morgan Stanley and AlphaWise, showing that although sales of the iPad mini are cannibalizing sales of some of the full-size iPads, concerns over the trend are "overblown." That was the opinion of Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty, who said that the numbers show that Apple's risk over cannibalization by the mini is "manageable."

The numbers she's referring to indicate that 47 percent of iPad mini purchasers are new to Apple, which is slightly less than the 56 percent number for the full-size iPad. There were other positive signs for Apple; the survey showed that about the same percentage of potential buyers -- 50 percent -- plan on purchasing an iPad over other tablets as they did in December 2011. The news isn't as rosy for Amazon's Kindle Fire, which saw a 5 percent drop in respondents planning a purchase.

Microsoft's new Surface tablet is apparently interesting to 12 percent of the respondents, while Samsung's tablets showed a 7 percent rise in purchase intentions over December 2011. Google's Nexus tablet also showed a solid rise of 6 percent, while all other tablets saw a huge drop in interest from 24 percent last year to only 5 percent in 2012.

Morgan Stanley: iPad mini cannibalization "overblown" originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Mon, 17 Dec 2012 15:00:00 EST.

Despite the demise of the high-profile iPad-only newspaper The Daily this past week, the Alliance for Audited Media (formerly the Audit Bureau of Circulations) found that 87 percent of US magazine and newspaper publishers have an iPad app.

The AAM's survey, which can be viewed in full here, shows that while iOS apps are in the lead right now, publishers are creating content for a growing number of platforms. Close to 70 percent were creating native apps, while 67 percent were creating web apps. Magazines were much more likely to use native apps, while newspapers were split on using native and web apps.

As expected from the move from paper to digital, paywalls are becoming a common way for newspapers to monetize their content. A full 48 percent of newspapers responding to the AAM survey said that they have a paywall, something that was totally nonexistent just a few years ago.

With all of the growth in digital magazines and newspapers, over 97 percent of the respondents to the survey still believe that they'll continue their printed editions in the next five years.

Survey: 87% of US magazines, newspapers have an iPad app originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Mon, 17 Dec 2012 12:30:00 EST.

Here at TUAW, we just received our 5 billionth review request for a new iPad keyboard system. More and more, makeshift solutions attempting to turn iPads into laptops is a "been there done that" for me.

Is it "too Microsoft" to ask Apple to come out with a proper convertible notebook/tablet, a duo for the new decade? After all, Windows 8 hasn't exactly been redefining the user experience. That's something that Apple usually does.

There are, admittedly, problems with the proposition:

You can already "kind of sort of" get work done on iPads -- more than ever, now that software is expanding for the touch-based office, Bluetooth accessories are ubiquitous, and onboard dictation means you don't have to hunch over a desktop to get things done.

OS X isn't meant for small screens or touch interfaces. You probably don't want to be running Xcode on an iPad mini.

Even though many technologies for iOS and OS X are converging, the underlying basis for sandboxing the file system are still far enough apart that running both OS'es on a single unit would be a smidge difficult. Not impossible, but difficult.

The raw power needed to compile efficiently would price a convertible out of the market and it would probably have to weigh as much as a Macbook Pro to get any real work done.

On the other hand, wouldn't it be awesome if a tablet really could do full desktop-level creation work, be able to dock to monitors wirelessly, be able to operate in tablet mode, and provide all the power of Apple's top systems in a tiny package.

By the way, I'd also like sparkles for my rainbow pony unicorn.

None of these technologies are unachievable, although ports, storage and battery life would provide strong design challenges, not to mention balancing weight into the equation. And, of course, the bigger question is would a frankentablet sell?

Are we heading towards a unified device solution? Or is the triumvurate of desktop / laptop / tablet due to continue for the foreseeable future?

You tell us. Vote in this poll and then join in the comments.
