Want to figure out how much you'll pay to cancel your AT&T iPhone contract? The fee starts at $325 for iPhone contracts after June 1 2010 and goes down $10/month. Use this Wolfram Widget to calculate the termination fee for the current date. After you cancel, you can still use an inexpensive Pay as You Go plan with your 3G or later AT&T GSM iPhone unit.

Cancelling AT&T - Tip of the day originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 13:15:00 EST. Did you know that the iPhone uses US FCC Hearing Aid compatibility ratings? Given a value from one (least compatible) to four (most compatible), the iPhone is rated on a per-network/per-bandwidth basis for both acoustic coupling (standard hearing aids) and inductive coupling (telecoil hearing aids).

The iPhone 4 offers perfect "4" hearing aid scores on the 3G network (850/1900 MHz) and on Verizon's CDMA network. When operating using 2G networks, the iPhone experiences some quality loss, particularly with acoustic coupling on 2G networks at 1900MHz, where it drops from a 3 down to a 2 rating.

Hearing aids and the iPhone - Tip of the day originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 01:36:00 EST. Want to listen to FM radio on your iPod nano? You need to plug in a head set. The iPod nano uses the attached cord as its antenna, allowing it to pick up radio signals. Say you want to dock the nano and play its radio back on speakers? You'll still need to attach a cord of some kind to the earplug jack. A standard 3.5mm audio cable will do the job for you. Look for one that's at least 8-inches long.

Listen to FM radio on your iPod nano - Tip of the day originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Tue, 27 Sep 2011 23:58:00 EST. Want to type the € euro symbol on your keyboard? How you this depends on your region. In the US, the secret combination is option+shift+2. For many (but not all) Europeans, it's Option-E. You can restore your Apple TV both on the unit itself and through iTunes. Choose Settings > General > Reset and click Restore to return your device to its factory-fresh state. If you can't make this happen directly, there's also iTunes. Make sure you have a micro USB cable on-hand (a lot of Bluetooth earpieces use this style for recharging, or you can buy one from a local computer store). Disconnect the HDMI cable and plug in the micro USB to your computer. Launch iTunes. You may need to disconnect power as well -- although TUAW's results on this vary. Once iTunes recognizes the unit, you can select it and click Restore. This downloads (if needed) and installs the latest firmware.

It won't contain a full Lion install, but it can save you if your hard drive goes south. Download a copy of the Lion Recovery Assistant and use it to build a recovery drive from your current Lion install. The assistant works with any thumb drive with at least 1GB of free space. Lion makes it easy to join free Wi-Fi hotspots with landing pages, like those at Starbucks and McDonald's (often offered by AT&T in the US and BT OpenZone in the UK). Technology baked into OS X Lion eliminates the need to use a browser to pass a landing page that stands between you and the Internet.

When you join such a network with Lion, a Finder window will open when Lion detects the landing page's request to accept the network's terms and conditions. You can accept the T&C right from the Finder window (which even offers backwards and forwards browsing buttons) and get connected, all without ever opening your browser. The process is even faster if you've joined that particular free AT&T or BT Openzone wireless network before. If so, your MacBook will automatically join it when you open its lid and the Finder window will pop-up automatically, allowing you to get past the landing page and get connected in one step.

The no-browser way to access free Wi-Fi networks with landing pages is a small feature, sure, but its another one of those little touches that make Lion worthwhile and that makes a Mac a Mac.

How to auto-join hotspots in Lion originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Mon, 15 Aug 2011 13:23:00 EST. While it only affects a few functions now, like AirDrop, your Apple ID will be even more important when iCloud is available. Looking for that handy readout at the bottom of every Finder window telling you how many items are in the active folder, and how much free space is on your hard drive? In OS X 10.7 Lion, it's turned off by default (part of the cleaner, scrollbar-free new UI style). Easy enough to restore it, though: just choose Show Status Bar (⌘-/) from the View menu, and continue on with your fully-informed computing day.

Sick of Lion autocorrecting your slang and your friends' names to "real words?" Disable the autocorrect feature in System Preferences > Language & Text > Text > Correct spelling automatically. Still autocorrecting? If you've got a bunch of locked files in your Trash, the 'really delete?' warnings can be a drag. You can speed up the Empty Trash process and bypass all the warnings (use with caution!) by holding down the Option key before choosing the command from the Finder menu. Notice that the ellipsis disappears from the command name, indicating that you won't be bothered (or checked with) again.

Speed up Empty Trash originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Sun, 10 Jul 2011 11:15:00 EST. The stealthy and powerful Option key strikes again. If you need to quickly switch between audio input or output choices, no need to open up System Preferences and click around. Just hold down Option and left-click on the Sound menu icon at the right side of the menu bar. You can adjust your input or outputs to suit.

Quick-change your audio devices originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Sun, 03 Jul 2011 16:00:00 EST.

If you find yourself inadvertently emailing friends or colleagues at the address they quit using years ago, chances are Mail.app's Previous Recipients list is at fault. It's easy enough to clear out the cruft; just go to Mail's Window menu and choose Previous Recipients. Select the addresses you want to get rid of (Cmd-click or shift-click to select more than one) and then click Remove From List. So long, bad addresses!

Clearing old addresses from Mail's auto-complete list originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Thu, 30 Jun 2011 15:25:00 EST.

It's time to hand off your old iPhone to its new owner, but you definitely want to scrub it clean of all your data beforehand. Simple enough: in the Settings app, tap General, then scroll down to Reset and tap it. The option to 'Erase All Content and Settings' is the one you want; it will remove any trace of personalization and all your installed apps, returning your phone to factory-fresh condition.

Depending on which iOS device you're resetting, the process may take quite a while (older iPod touch and iPhones pre-3GS don't support hardware encryption, so they actually have to wipe all the onboard memory byte by byte). Be sure you're plugged into power or that the device is fully charged before you begin.

Wiping down your iPhone for resale originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Thu, 23 Jun 2011 04:00:00 EST.
