TJ Luoma cut his computing teeth on NeXT computers back in the day when 16MB of RAM and 8MB of disk space was considered a big deal.  He helped to maintain the PEAK FTP archive for NeXTStep and OpenStep software. In 2003 he got his first iPod. In 2004 he broke off a brief-but-unfortunate relationship with Windows 2000 and jumped into the Mac OS X world.  In 2007, his contract with Sprint expired one week after the iPhone was released and his transformation to Mac user was complete when he ditched his Treo for an iPhone.

Alfred, Dropbox, Hazel, and Markdown? All in a day's work

"How does a geek-pastor use a computer?" is a question that I assume a lot of people ask themselves, although they probably don't. But if they did, this would be one answer: I need to make a list of the readings and sermon titles for the church secretary and choir director, so one can make the w...

Automatically unhide the /Users folder after 10.9.3 update

Update 2014-05-17: There is strong evidence via The Mac Observer that this was caused by an odd combination of iTunes 11.2 and Find My Mac, not 10.9.3. Apple even mentioned a related permissions issue in the security release notes for iTunes 11.2.1 So the best fix for this is to download and insta...

PhotoSync's location triggers send iOS photos to your Mac

The best way to upload photos to Dropbox[1] from your iOS devices is by not using Dropbox. Well, not the iOS app, at least. Uploading to Dropbox is slow, and will drain your battery as it uses the Dropbox API to upload. If you aren't on Wi-Fi, it might even eat up your cellular data. If you have a...

Launch your favorite apps as needed with Keyboard Maestro

On Mac Power Users 181, I mentioned that I have a keyboard shortcut for OmniFocus' "Quick Entry" which works even if OmniFocus isn't running. Tom Siko asked if I'd be willing to share it, so here it is. Even if you don't use OmniFocus, this idea can be re-used for any application that you run via...
