At the bottom of the window is the Captures Tray, showing all screen captures. On the right are the markup tools.
Click it to take a screenshot. It sticks to your Mac window out of the way.
In Window capture mode, you see every window that is open on your Mac. Hover over one to highlight it, click to capture.
Here you can see the yellow border that shows up around a window, the crosshairs for making a selection, and the scrollable window capture at the bottom of the screen.
