The Art of Mac App Icons
- Front Row
This is an icon many Mac users never see, as they start up Front Row with the Apple remote. The wood grain in the chair legs is amazingly detailed, and the red leatherette covering the seats looks comfortable.
We usually see this guitar as a tiny icon in our Docks. When blown up to full size, it's amazingly detailed. Does anyone know what model of guitar this is?
- Photo Booth
I have to wonder if the person in the strip of pictures is the designer. Notice that she takes her glasses off in the third frame.
It's not just Apple designers who take advantage of the 512 x 512 pixel canvas. Here is Panic's Transmit icon in full glory. Notice the tread on the tires, and the cab details -- rear view mirror, shift knob, and steering wheel!
This icon for Picturesque from Acqualia is beautiful. The grains in the "powder", the strands of hair on the girl's head, all show a remarkable level of detail.
- Little Snapper
Someone at Realmac Software had fun with this. Note the writing around the lens? And the back of the icon looks like a display on a camera.
- Prizmo (Creaceed)
At the regular size, this is just a piece of paper with a prism on top of it. At 512 x 512, you can see how the text is distorted by the glass prism. The text? A dictionary description of a prism!
- Autograph (by Ten One Design)
Being a baseball fan, I enjoyed this icon a lot. The yarn used to tie the leather on the ball together is appropriately fuzzy. I wonder who Peter and Jenny are?
- Sponge (by Dare To Be Creative)
I love the detail of this icon at full size. The sponge has a porous look to it, and it's "dirty" from cleaning the window. Classic!
Incredible detail, considering that you can read the title and headings for the blog entries! Who are the mysterious "Turner, J.B., and me"?
Have you looked at the Preview icon close up? The photographer's loupe is phenomenally detailed, and you can see every wind-blown hair on the head of the child.
- System Profiler
OK, what the heck is this chip? 810-54-2136-1 RM-NCE-1 6319-415-1239 Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
- Remote Install Mac OS X
The detail here is amazing. That's a translucent globe, and you can see the continents on the other side! Notice the Apple icon sticking out of the drive?
- 1Password (Agile Solutions)
This icon is so cool. The key has the proper bumps, and the key handle is ridged so you'll be less likely to drop it. And of course, the Safari icon is behind the key and "lock".
- Image Capture Icon
While it's not as detailed as the Little Snapper camera, I like the touches - the lens reflection in the lens, the bumps on the grip, and the real pictures below the camera.
