The Soulmen have put together some great screencasts showing how to make the most of the features of Ulysses. They're accessible from the built-in help function.
If one level of backups isn't going to be enough for you, you can set a huge number of levels and even have backups made automatically.
This tiny screen is always visible in the corner of the main Ulysses window, showing a running count of the number of characters, words, paragraphs, lines, and pages of text you've written. Great for NaNoWriMo!
The Heads Up Display in console mode gives you all of the info in Document Info, except in an unobtrusive way.
You can search in any document in your project, and see word or phrase in context in the original.
Need to see all of the documents in a project? The document browser lets you see their titles, status, and other tags that you've applied to them.
If you want spell check while you're typing in console mode, you can set it here along with numerous other preferences.
Don't like the default colors or font in console mode? You can change them. Maybe an old green-screen setup would bring back memories...
Highlighting can denote text that needs to be reworked or even erased.
