Writer's tools: WriteRoom wreally wrocks {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Aug 5th 2009 12:27PM I love WriteRoom. I think it's important, always, to distinguish between writing and word-processing. WriteRoom is great for writing.
I wanted to note that WriteRoom can toggle between full-screen and a smaller (black text on white) window with the Escape key. So if you really, really need to look something up online while writing, you can.

They won't do anything if you're unhappy with Firefox's scrolling, but Aronnax's Firefox themes might help with appearance:

These are the most beautiful Firefox themes I've seen.

Sep 4th 2008 12:18PM In WriteRoom, you can switch from and back to full-screen mode with Escape. (Very helpful when having to look things up.)
TextExpander is terrific, and makes it easy to do simple HTML in a text-editor, esp. with its clipboard. (Easy to copy a URL and make it a link.)
This three-part series will be helpful to many people who've switched or who are thinking of switching to a Mac. There's life beyond Microsoft Word.

Sep 2nd 2008 2:21PM Three cheers for Bean, which has become my everyday word-processor. Its creator, James Hoover, is very receptive to suggestions. For documents involving greater fancification, Pages is great. (I made up "fancification.")
I share your reservation about Mellel — the design isn't inviting.
Pages will open .docx — I can't say though how well it handles a complicated .docx file.

Get a "manila envelope" sleeve for your MacBook Air {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Jan 17th 2008 3:37PM I understand the stealth factor, but I'm not sure that I'd want a case that could be mistaken — even for a moment — for something as ephemeral as an envelope.

Jan 4th 2008 4:35PM Anyone know how to stop the Quicksilver Shelf from popping up when Quicksilver starts up? All of a sudden, that's what's happening on my MacBook. The Blacktree forum, which holds a post about this question, is unavailable. Thanks.

Nov 14th 2007 10:27PM Re ImageWell: Thanks, guys! I can't get drag and drop to work, but it's easy enough to open a second image in Preview and copy and paste into ImageWell.

Nov 8th 2007 5:41PM Thanks, Mat and Brakki. I tried The GIMP on a Linux machine but could not drop anything to show up when dropped onto the enlarged canvas. I'll try the .pdf merger.
Ask TUAW: iMac Gaming, QuickTime broadcasting, flash drive encryption and more {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Nov 7th 2007 10:05PM An embarrassingly simple question, I'm afraid. But I'll ask:
I needed to join two scans of newspaper columns into one image, and I couldn't figure how to do so with ImageWell, iPhoto, Preview, or Seashore. I could have done it in Pages by lining up the two images and doing a screenshot, but the result would've exceeded the size of my screen. I ended up having to use MS Paint (sigh). What I need is a program that allows me to add some empty space to an image (by dragging an image's borders outward) and then copy and paste in another image and move it into place. Any program recommendations? Or is there a way to do so in one of the programs I've mentioned? Thanks!

Analysis: iWork and Office for Mac {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Aug 26th 2007 1:32PM Sad to say that there are still lots of people who think that you must have Office to read .doc files. (I know some.)
But I still think that the future will be less Office-centric. If I can work with iWork, Google Apps, and OpenOffice.org (in Ubuntu), I feel no need for Office on my computers.
Help with USB problems {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Aug 26th 2007 1:13PM Any suggestions for speeding up the ejection of a USB memory-stick? I wait and wait, and I still get the warning message. I've looked online with no success. Could the slowness be related to BlueHarvest (zapping Trashes and .DS_Stores)?
