Installing Ubuntu 8.10 on a Mac {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Oct 30th 2008 10:04PM You missed one of the easiest ways to install! If you have Windows on your Boot Camp partition, simply put the Ubuntu CD in the drive while running Windows and select the option to install on Windows. This will install Ubuntu on a virtual drive within Windows, but allow you to "Dual-boot" within the Windows Boot Camp partition. So when you start your Mac, you first choose Windows, then select Ubuntu in the next menu that comes up. The advantage of this is that you will essentially be running Ubuntu natively on your Mac (with some disk performance degradation due to the disk being virtualized), so you can use the fancy 3D stuff. And it's super simple to uninstall as well. This "Ubuntu-within-Windows" option originated from the Wubi project. Google it to learn more.
AT&T: free iPhone wifi is coming at some point {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
May 11th 2008 7:15PM Yes. That would make more sense. One can always hope...
AT&T: free iPhone wifi is coming at some point {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
May 11th 2008 7:12PM "way of differentiating the AT&T network and giving customers another reason to choose us over a competitor."
So they will have competitors now? Does this mean that the iPhone is going to be opened up sooner rather than later?
Perian 1.1. released {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Feb 7th 2008 1:15PM Um, after I install Perian 1.1 and click on the Pref. pane, it tells me that I can't use it on a PPC Mac. Is this Intel only?
How do you sync multiple Macs? {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Oct 12th 2007 4:02PM I use Foldershare (free, www.foldershare.com) to sync my computers. This can be used to Sync a PC or Mac (or any combination). It works automatically and almost instantaneously (no scheduling needed - things are always kept in sync because the client monitors file changes in real-time). I just wish it worked with Linux, too.
Ask TUAW: Open With, AFP, iTunes with cell phone, escaping iPhoto, and more {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
May 23rd 2007 8:30AM Regarding Gene's question about mounting external HDs, I have been using a donationware program called SharePoints for years. It works great for this. Check it out: http://hornware.com/sharepoints/
Regarding James' question about syncing two computers, I use the free software Foldershare at www.foldershare.com. Just install this software on the computers you would like to sync, then tell the software which folders to "pair up." The great thing about this software is that it will synchronize your computers wherever they are - even over the internet when you are away from home! It also does everything automatically and instantly. As soon as I edit and save a Word file, the changes are synced. I never have to worry about manual syncs or hourly syncs that could still cause me to lose data. Best of all, it's free, and it also works with Windows machines (I'm currently syncing my iMac with my Thinkpad - works flawlessly).
Beta Beat: Cha-Ching! 0.4 {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Dec 9th 2006 10:18PM I think this app looks great and will be exactly what I need once the import/export features are in place. Also, the price is right at $14.95 (although I was able to pick it up for free as part of a certain Heist - I was very excited when I saw that this was the prize).
Found Footage: Zune upstaged by a Shuffle {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Nov 14th 2006 5:35PM The best line of all came at the very end of the segment, when the anchor pointed at the Zune and said, "Why don't they get some decent design people to make things look better? I mean, it's clunky. It's clunky." I'm sure he repeated that just for emphasis.
Engadget's relaunch giveaways: Nikon S7c WiFi camera {Engadget}
Sep 26th 2006 5:26PM I'll go with Ansel Adams.
Hacker installs Core 2 Duo chip in Mac mini, hangs on for the ride {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Jun 13th 2006 6:38PM I agree with the sentiments of the first poster. Don't forget that the Core Duo is still the best mobile processor Intel's ever had. That can't be so bad, can it? Sure, processors will continue to get better. Should Apple wait indefinitely? Of course not. And don't forget that the Core Duo isn't just used in Macs. There are plenty of happy Core Duo users out there (including Mac users).
