Apple posts Airport update

Last week many, many of you reported problems with wifi since the OS X 10.4.10 update. Fortunately, Apple appears to have heard your cries of anguish and has released the Airport Extreme Update 2007-4. Apple doesn't say much about what the update contains but does say it "is recommended for all Intel-based MacBook, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini computers and improves the reliability of AirPort connections."

So, for those of you who had problems, did this fix it?

Thanks, Kender!

OS X 10.4.10 update causing widespread wifi problems?

We already mentioned the audio bug that popped up with the OS X 10.4.10 update (since hopefully corrected). Now reader Josh writes in to say that 10.4.10 also introduced a nasty wifi bug that's apparently causing both repeated connection loss and even kernel panics for a lot of users. There's a long thread on the Apple discussions boards, and independent confirmations from around the macweb. The main workaround so far is to go wired (which is hardly a workaround if you ask me).

If you haven't thus far updated, it would probably be a good idea to hold off yet again until Apple can get this fixed. How many of you are experiencing problems?

OS X 10.4.10 causes audio pops in some Macs

Well of course I would find this right after I updated. I normally wait a bit after Apple System Updates to see if any problems develop among those of you who just can't wait to hit that update button. According to this thread over at the Apple Support forums, quite a few users are reporting problems with the recent 10.4.10 update. Apparently some folks are hearing snaps and pops in their audio playback after installing the update. Perusing the thread seems to indicate that most of the problems are on Intel Macs with external speakers. So if you haven't updated yet, you may want to wait a few days to see how this one develops.

10.4.10 on the way

Reports from AppleInsider and other sources indicate that the next Tiger update, ten-four-ten (sounds like a CB radio code) will be seeding to developers as early as next week. As Erica noted back in March, there's been some question of the exact naming for this update (10.4.9a? 10.4.9 SP1?) and it seems like 10.4.10 is the plan.

With Leopard's ship date in the autumn, some final patches to the current big cat are certainly in order. At my office we're still waiting for a fix on longstanding issues with WPA2 authentication/Proxim wireless access points on the MacBooks/MBPs... perhaps this update will be the one that clears those nagging problems.
