Apple store back up; Final Cut Pro 7, Logic Pro 9 released

It's always an exciting day when the Apple Store goes down. And it's not even a Tuesday.

Apple has updated Final Cut Studio, including Final Cut Pro 7 and Logic Pro 9. That's good news for artists! Musicians and filmmakers now have something new to play with. Even better, they can do it for less: the suite is now $999, $300 less than the previous version. Upgrades are $299.

FCP 7 includes three new ProRes codecs, alpha transitions, new sharing options including support for iChat Theater, automatic transfer of P2 media and more. Motion 4 includes new 3D shadow and reflection options, and the ever-popular bad film filter. All the apps in Studio have been updated to new versions.

Apple also announced version 1.5 of the Final Cut Server collaboration and asset management environment. The unlimited-license edition of FC Server is also $999 & upgrades are $299..

Full feature list from Apple PR in the continuation of the post.

Pingdom brings Apple Store downtime hysteria to your website

Every time the Apple Store has some downtime, magic seems to happen, especially if it happens to be a Tuesday. Not surprisingly, we get a flood of emails from excited readers a few minutes after the yellow sticky note goes up, letting us know that we better be on our toes when the store comes back up. Follow that with some obsessive site-checking and collectively, that's a lot of manual labor. It's about time we started automating the process.

Pingdom, purveyors of website monitoring services, have produced a badge that puts the status of the Apple Store on your web page, blog, and maybe your dashboard with a web clipping. Pingdom does the work of pinging the Apple Store once per minute to determine its current state, and provides you with an image indicating up or down which is embedded in an iFrame. Simple, but effective.

So, save the wear and tear on your mouse and grab the badge rather than hitting refresh all morning this Tuesday. Pingdom also has a downtime history going, and an analysis of Apple's "marketing by downtime." After all, it is quite a well-planned marketing scheme, if not a growing national pastime for Apple fans.

The Apple Store is down: regular Tuesday morning freak-out ritual.

The North American Apple stores are down. Last week it was Aperture 2 and Apple TV software updates. This week? Post your guesses/odds in the comments. Or tell us to get lives and stop checking the store every five minutes (point taken).

Let's think, is there any hardware refresh that is greatly anticipated? Nah... but now it's back up, and see Brett's post for the details.

Apple Store down

In a shocking turn of events, Apple has taken down the Apple Store in advance of today's media event. I wonder what Apple's web elves are busily updating... only time will tell.

Thanks to everyone for sending this in.

The Apple Store is down... must be Tuesday.

Or is Dawn in trouble? I forget. Anyway, as noted by our loyal readers, the Apple Store site is down this morning (US only at the moment -- the UK store appears to still be up), sporting the Post-it note that strikes glee into the hearts of gear groupies far and wide. Is it new iMacs? A bagful of iPhone accessories? We will know shortly.

Update: Doesn't appear that there were any changes to the product offerings... darn these maintenance outages that are actually for performing maintenance.

Thanks everyone who sent this in.

The Apple Store is down

Ah, the delicate dance that is the few hours before a Stevenote. Apple's web elves are not only busy updating the iTunes Store, it would seem that are updating Apple's online store as well (and not just in the US, we have reports that the Apple store in several countries).

This just builds the excitement, doesn't it?

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Apple Stores round the world are down

Ahh, the online Apple Store is down. Can you feel the excitement. I wonder what Apple's web elves are cooking up for us. Could it have something to do with the WWDC keynote?

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Apple store down

The Apple Store (US at least, all around the world) is down at the moment. Could this mean some cool new product, or just some maintenance? It is probably just Apple's web elves fixing something, but where's the fun in that?

Thanks to all who sent this in!

UPDATE: The Store is back up and it looks like it was just a little maintenance.

UPDATE II: It turns out nothing was added to the US store (or any others for that matter), but the EU Apple stores had things removed. You can no longer get iSights, eMacs or Airport base stations in the EU because they do not comply with stricter environmental laws in the member countries. Thanks to everyone in the comments for pointing this out. More details here.

Tip of the Day

To get an instant map to any address, just go to your Address Book and right click on the address field of any one of your contacts and select "Map Of." The address will then be revealed in Google Maps on Safari. You can do the same if a data detector determines there is an address in an e-mail in Mail.
