Insomnia Film Festival postponed due to server problems

A few weeks ago, we told you about this year's Insomnia Film Festival -- a contest for high school and college students to create a 3-minute film in only 24 hours. However, eager contestants were greeted with some unfortunate news yesterday when they loaded the Apple Insomnia website.

Apple notes that "due to unexpected challenges" the film festival will be postponed until after the holidays. Many TUAW readers let us know they were unable to register, so server errors could be to blame for this postponement.

If you have already registered, Apple will contact you shortly with the new, rescheduled date. If you haven't registered for the film festival, and would still like to, you can do so on the Apple website.

TUAW On Scene: from the premiere of Welcome to Macintosh

Here's to the crazy ones. TUAW reader Tony Walla got to attend the Wisconsin premiere of the new Mac-doc film that's sure to be a crowd pleaser (depending on the crowd), and he sent us this report.

On April 6th, the documentary "Welcome to Macintosh" premiered at the Wisconsin Film Festival in Madison, WI to a packed theater of about 275 festival goers. Josh Rizzo and Rob Baca, who co-directed and produced the film, were in attendance. Before the film began, attendees could be seen checking email on their MacBooks, MacBook Pros, and iPhones. Even a Newton or two was in the crowd. One audience member even used the iSight on his MacBook Pro to snap a picture of the audience. To the attendees, this was not just a documentary, this was an Apple event.

Rizzo and Baca's goal is to tell the story of the Macintosh experience. "In order to do the Mac experience, you've got to put it in context of the Mac history," notes Baca. Rizzo added, "You can't appreciate where it is today without knowing some of the past and the fact that there is a sprit, a personality. There is a flame that lives in Apple, that lives through some of the products that is dispersed though the creativity of the people that make them."

Welcome to Macintosh documentary to premiere on 4/6

The new documentary Welcome to Macintosh has just been been accepted to the Wisconsin Film Festival, and is scheduled to make its debut on April 6. The film features interviews with a variety of Mac-notables like Andy Hertzfeld, Guy Kawasaki and others, and traces the history of the development of the Mac since before its introduction. I have to admit I'm a sucker for this sort of thing, so I'll definitely be interested to see the film when it's released.

IFC films now available in iTunes Store

IFC Entertainment has just announced the immediate availability of select independent films in the iTunes Store, including IFC's 2007 Independent Spirit Award (think Oscars for indies) nominees. All thirteen films, six of which are nominees for the award ceremony this weekend, are available for purchase at $9.99. The other films are previous Independent Spirit Award nominees, highlighting some of the most critically acclaimed titles in IFC's catalog. Film titles include Me And You And Everyone We Know, The Thin Blue Line, Pizza, Sorry, Haters, Camp, Go Tigers!, and others. Also available are free podcasts dedicated to each of the movies with behind-the-scenes footage and discussions. No word on potential future releases from IFC.

Support doc: MacBook may run warm because rear vent is blocked

First Engadget reported it, and now there's an official Apple Support document explaining the issue: some MacBooks (and Pros) are apparently making it out of the factory with a thin piece of clear plastic ~~blocking~~ covering the rear vent. The article states the obvious: that this plastic is used to protect the notebook from dust while in the factory.

So if it looks like you're starting to get a tan from using your MacBook on your lap too often (which Apple doesn't recommend anyway), you might want to check that rear exhaust vent for any clear, plastic blockage.

How to Create Your Own ILM for Almost Nothing

Victor, over at DownloadSquad, has posted one of the most amazing How Tos. If you are at all interested in DIY film-making, you're going to want to go check it out.

There's a lot of good gems in the tutorial, including a link to Director's Boards, which I didn't know about and Blender, which I've mentioned here before. I also like that the Mac system recommended for the project is a Mac mini. That alone is a pretty good argument against the Macs are more expensive than PCs myth.
