iPhone apps we crave

Well, Merlin, you did ask.

Having listed some imaginary iPhone apps he'd like to see, Merlin Mann asked the world: "What's the iPhone app you crave?" Hmm, let me see now - I've got a little list.

  • Avant Go: A fantastic portable newsagent, in which you could download whole chunks of your favourite magazine and newspaper web sites for offline reading. I used to read dozens of articles in Avant Go on my train commutes in and out of London, back in the days when I commuted. It was an absolutely essential app and I'm very much looking forward to it - or something similar - arriving on iPhone.
  • Yojimbo or Notational Velocity for iPhone: See yesterday's rant. If this, or something like this, isn't right round the corner, I shall eat my router.
  • TextMate or Bean: This is dependent on Apple opening up Bluetooth to other devices in a future software update. If I could use a full-size external keyboard to quickly write text, I'd want a decent editor to write it in.
What iPhone apps are you craving? Let us know in the comments.

MacTech's 25 most influential, version 2007

MacTech has released their MacTech 25 for the second year in a row-- it's a list of the top 25 most influential people in the Mac community (as selected by the community itself), and it reads like a who's who of people doing great stuff : John Gruber, the suave-looking Aaron Hillegass and Brent Simmons all make return appearances. This year they chose everyone who's ever programmed for MarsEdit (as Daniel Jalkut is happy to say), not to mention both co-founders of Rogue Ameoba, Paul Kafasis and Alex Lagutin.

Who's missing? Anyone from Apple-- MacTech specifically left them off the list to make sure they didn't hog the Spotlight, so to speak. They say that Apple employees are allowed to be put in the Honorable Mentions section, but as far as I can tell, while Leo Laporte, David Pogue and Merlin Mann all made it, no one from Apple actually did. Better get cracking on those influencing techniques for next year, guys.

Party with TUAW at WWDC

Monday, June 11 is going to be a big day. Oh sure, Jobs and Co. are going to lay some heavy fun stuff on us in the morning. And that afternoon the blogosphere will implode, and Engadget will liveblog the whole thing. But the night will host the very first second official TUAW meetup.

What better place to mull the latest iPhone announcements, or chuckle over the Finders-of-yon than San Francisco's own House of Shields? I hear tell Merlin Mann has made an appearance at the venerable watering hole, so who knows what other Mac masters might appear? *(Please note, I've no idea if Merlin will even be on the West Coast next week.) Anyway, House of Shields is about five minutes from the Moscone, so we're hoping no one is troubled by travel issues.

You can see an invite of sorts over here on Upcoming. Since the place is pretty much a bar, I'm thinking you'll have to be 21 to attend, sorry folks (consolation prize info coming tomorrow). The party starts at 8pm, and we've got a few drink tickets for the imbibing. Giveaways start at 10pm. We hunt Zunes for sport at midnight.

Merlin shows us the Quicksilver comma trick

The ubiquitous internet gadfly, and productivity guru, Merlin Mann recently launched yet another online venture: The Merlin Show. The first five episodes have nothing to do with Apple (though they are interesting), however, the latest episode covers a TUAW favorite, Quicksilver.

Merlin shows us how ,armed only with Quicksilver and the comma key, you can save a few moments queueing up tasks you want done on multiple files at the same time. Watch the short video and learn a thing. You'll thank me later.

My Dream App voting round 2

The second round of voting is under way over at My Dream App. Vote and let your voice be heard! Plus, when you vote you get a free copy of Mori, Hog Bay Software's document organizer.

This round's judges are the cream of the crop of Mac bloggers including John Siracusa of Ars Technica, John Gruber of Daring Fireball, Merlin Mann of 43 Folders. Oh, and somehow yours truly got invited to be a judge. Go check out the apps and vote for your favorite.

My favorite idea so far? Blossom, I've never seen an app like it and I sure hope it gets some votes.

43 Folders on timing apps

Are you an alpha geek? Do you need to schedule every activity on your Mac with military precision? Well then, Merlin Mann is probably some sort of god to you. Therefore it stands to reason that you would be interested in his take on Meridian and Flextime which are two timing applications.

I am not nearly driven enough to use either of these apps, I just don't have the time (that's a joke, son).

6 semi-obscure Quicksilver plugins from 43Folders

Merlin Mann, who won't rest until everything is done, has listed 6 plugins for, TUAW favorite, Quicksilver that you might not be aware of. There are a few that I hadn't heard of (and I thought I knew everything) so head on over to his post and check 'em out.

Word of warning: constellation menus have been known to cause nausea.
