Roxio ships TiVo to Go for Mac
Engadget and Zatz Not Funny! are reporting that Roxio -- yes, Popcorn, Toast with Jam, that Roxio -- has partnered with TiVo to deliver the long-awaited TiVotoGo for Mac client, built in to Toast Titanium 8. All together, everyone: "Wha?!?"
The new Toast will allow you to browse your TiVo content, play back TV shows, burn to DVD (of course) and also transcode for iPod or PSP. Zatz notes that the included video player appears to have come over from Elgato's EyeTV 2 package, which already features tight integration with Toast. The new version also includes non-TiVo goodness like BluRay support, new audio mastering and conversion utilities, and cross-platform support for spanned disk backups. Toast is normally $99 but there's a $20 rebate in play now if ordered direct from Roxio. I'm sure that some of my colleagues will be running over to the Roxio booth at Macworld to check it out.

So...I can buy a new Macbook (because Toast is no longer within my iBook's capabilities) and then spend another $99...to do what TIVO allows Wintel users to do for FREE?!

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but how is it ok to essentially charge US$99 for the same functionality Windows users get included with their TiVo sub?

The Blue-Ray support in Toast gives credence to the rumor of Apple including Blue-Ray in their future machines. Perhaps there will be a BD-R option available for the Mac Pro in the not to distant future. Perhaps as early as tomorrow. :)

Keep in mind, TiVo isn’t selling this...Roxio is, and the $99 includes all the other Toast functions. For all we know, the TiVo portion is freebie.
Now...before anyone throws darts my way...yes, TiVo should have developed this themselves and offered it to all of us Macheads, just as they did for the PC users way-back-when. Had they put in the effort instead of waiting for someone else to do the heavy lifting, it no doubt would be free.
My guess is that someone at Roxio (likely a TiVo owner?) got fed up with waiting and said “What the hell, let’s go for it.” Can’t blame them for wanting to be paid for their software that now includes a bonus element.
Okay. Off my soapbox and back to real life. (grin)

I thought Windows users still have to buy the program to burn the files, no? They just get the desktop software for free.
Personally, I'm happy with TiVoDecode Manager and my current version of Toast, so I won't be upgrading. I guess they had to release this to compete with the open source version.

I'm kind of glad that TiVo didn't do this on their own -- I used TiVoToGo on Windows for awhile and didn't care for the services that it tried to run ALL THE TIME. Hopefully this will be a simpler, user-centric implementation that I can run when I want to run. Oh, wait -- I already have that with TiVo Decode Manager.
I'm glad that there is some official way for Mac users to get functional parity (albeit not cost parity) with Windows users, but this seems to be too little to late.

Went to buy it off the Tivo site (it redirects you to the Roxio store) and got a 404 error message. I noted on the message the following code for 10% off
404SAVE10
When i finally got to the page to order it the code worked so got the Software & Tivo Glo remote (first 5,000 orders) for the MacWorld/CES discount and 10% additional off for the 404 error came to $89 w/ shipping.

I went to the upgrade page and when I add it to my cart there is a $20 rebate AND a $30 rebate listed in the cart . what are the details for those? the code:404SAVE10 worked on top of that, but I haven't purchased yet...
Is there a separate $20 and $30 rebate, or one or the other?

I actually cancelled my TIVO just over a week ago. I realized how little I used it and with the HD box costing more than a child, it's not worth it. I just went back to the Comcast DVR - even though it can't do HD and you can't schedule over the internet, it does what I need it to do.
I tried the mac client homebrew a few weeks ago for Tivo. It was ok, but exporting over a 802.11b connection is less than ideal.

using it now. one word of caution: at the moment it has a problem similar to what many PC owners have had. If your tivo records the channel change of your cable box, the tivotogo program only transfers up to the channel change (a second or two) and not the program you want to transfer.

I think it is appalling that Tivo is forcing Mac users to buy Toast 8 in order to use the same TivotoGo service enjoyed by PC users for free. Tivo is punishing their subscribers who pay the exact same subscription rate as those who own PCs simply because Tivo is now in competition with Apple. I had planned to stay with Tivo even if Apple expanded their iTV product to include the same type of services and functionality as Tivo... but now I probably won't. Shame on you, Tivo!!!

TiVo burned me twice. First, they sent this happy little note to subscribers on January 9th:
"...P.S. For even more fun at Macworld this week, visit booth #314 and ask our friends at Roxio to give you a demo of Mac TiVoToGo!..."
I actually did go to Macworld and inquired about this demo, but the Roxio people were clueless and tried to sell me a remote and Toast, neither of which I need, for $99!
Second, I contacted TiVo support today to put it to them directly: why should Mac users pay? I was on hold for over 30 minutes, at which point it wasn't worth it anymore.
If TiVo can't give Mac users the same respect they give PC users then I'm moving over to Apple TV. Screw U TIVO!!!

erm, Apple TV doesn't do squat as a DVR. Yet. It only streams media from your mac.
Maybe all this collusion between EyeTV, Tivo, and Toast is pointing to them thinking a full DVR solution from Apple is inevitable. But it hasn't happened yet. AND it may not happen, as Apple may not want to mess with Hollywood deciding to play nice with the iTunes store, or compete with iTunes Store distribution by letting you do it yourself taking things off the airwaves/cable.

Be mad at Tivo for not supporting mac users, but don't get angry at a company like Roxio that has always built one of the best burning packages available. Now their new version comes with software you can use with your tivo. They're charging for their burn software like they always did. There's no shame in that, you're all crazy.
