Behold, the iQueue

The iQueue in action

What do you do when you've got a pre-queue queue downstairs, then an actual queue proper upstairs? There's a lot of tired people involved, and twice as many tired legs. The answer, of course, is the iQueue. Dozens of plastic chairs brought in solely for the comfort of your customers' backsides.

This pic was snapped in the London Regents Street Apple Store on Thursday afternoon as a great many people wait for their chance to buy an iPhone. Photographer Chris Mac Morrison was less than impressed.

"I'll wait until waiting time is less than 10 mins before i hand over any cash," he told us. Good plan.

Thanks to Mac for the pic.

New Apple Store coming to Leicester

Highcross, the location of the next UK Apple StoreApple will open a new UK store in Leicester on September 4th. The 577 square metre store will be located in the Highcross Leicester development along with 119 others, 15 restaurants and 3000 parking spaces. The new store joins others in Birmingham, Manchester, Solihull and Sheffield to provide pretty good coverage for the whole region.

Thanks to John Coxon for the tip!

TUAW Video: Aspen Grove Apple Store on 3G Day

Last year, I put together a little 10-minute movie about the iPhone lovefest on June 29, 2007. This year, I did the same in between talking with Erica on the phone, and cleaning all the comments out of my email -- after reading them, of course. All of this was done in line at the Aspen Grove Apple Store in Littleton, Colorado. I know some people were critical of the employees at other Apple Stores, but this team is very professional and courteous, and I thought they did a great job considering the pressure they were under.

This video was literally thrown together in about 30 minutes, so don't expect a potential Academy Award nominee. You've been forewarned!

After the Line Blog

Well, I'm back home after five hours in line at the Apple Store, less $389.98 (I bought AppleCare and a 16GB iPhone 3G). What do I have to show for it?

As of 1:00 PM MDT, everything is suddenly working. I have an iPhone 3G, although I've now discovered that I don't have 3G service at my home despite the AT&T coverage map showing that I do. My old iPhone is no longer sending or receiving phone calls, but at least I can use it as an iPod touch over Wi-Fi.

Read after the break for a recap of my morning:

Taking the Plunge: Updating to iPhone 2.0 Software Early

As was previously pointed out here at TUAW, the 2.0 firmware update for current iPhone and iPod Touch users has leaked out a bit early. Some have already taken the plunge and installed it. Still others are waiting for the "official" version from Apple to be released before going ahead and installing it. I'm not one of those people.

In the interest of doing something so readers of TUAW won't have to take the chance of a bricked iPhone, I downloaded and installed the new firmware this morning as soon as it was available. The update process went smoothly and, as expected, all of the media was erased from my iPhone. Fortunately, once the iPhone restarted and began its first sync after the update, all of my previous media (music, podcasts, video) was restored and able to be used again.

At first glance, some of the changes included in the new iPhone interface in iTunes 7.7 include an 'Applications' tab and a button to set up your iPhone to work with Apple's new MobileMe service which, as of this moment, isn't actually up and running yet. Also, after downloading several apps from the new App Store including AIM, Facebook, Google and Twitterific Premium, the iPhone was able to use those new applications without issue.

I also downloaded and installed other applications such as Salesforce Mobile, Net News Wire and Remote but so far, have not tested those. Also, and this particular change in the iPhone 2.0 interface made me very happy, there is now a dedicated 'Contacts' button allowing you to reach your contacts without having to go through the 'Phone' button first.

So, it appears that, at least in my case, the iPhone 2.0 firmware is a success. As the day progresses I'll let you know what else I find. Meantime, if you have questions, feel free to drop them in the comments.

Update: As pointed out by commenters, this update is for the iPhone only. The iPod touch update will be a paid download from the iTunes store for $9.95 and will include the January Update apps, as Robert noted earlier today.

Apple's retail chief on iPhone activations

Worried that you might be spending a lot of time waiting for that shiny new iPhone 3G to be activated? Well, never fear because the nice people at the Apple Store are there to help you. Bloomberg.com interviewed Apple's retail chief, Ron Johnson, about the iPhone retail activation process.

"Apple stores will handle about 30 customers at a time. While the company will make sure the activation process is quick," said Johnson about the activation time.

Johnson then went on to say that Apple will spend as much time as needed to make sure that the customer is happy with their purchase. You can read the full interview on the Bloomberg website.

US Apple Stores to open at 8:00 AM on Friday

Rise and shine, shoppers. According to AppleInsider, Apple retail stores will open at 8:00 AM this Friday, July 11th to begin selling the iPhone 3G. AT&T stores will also open at 8:00AM.

The longer work day will create time for the in-store activations, credit checks, etc. that the new iPhone will require. For me, this is a real bummer. Activating my original iPhone via iTunes in the quiet comfort of my own home was a pleasure; a typically "Apple" experience. Now, I've got to stand around like every other shmoe and wait for the workers to click this, type that, sign here and blah, blah. Oh, well.

Kansas Apple Store ready to open

The MacRumors Forums are abuzz with discussion about the opening of the first Apple Store in Kansas. Not to be confused with Apple Store Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Mo., this store is in Leawood, Kansas.

Specifically, the store is located in the new shopping center being built in the Crate & Barrel area on the south east corner of 119th & Roe. While there's no listing on Apple's retail page, they do have a map page partially complete.

Several forum users state that the store will open on July 11, just in time for the 3G iPhone launch. If you visit this store over the weekend, please let us know! Welcome to the club, Kansas!

Thanks, Darrell!

AT&T to limit iPhone 3G purchases at launch

A recent MacRumors post suggests that you might only be able to purchase one iPhone 3G per customer from AT&T. While we haven't heard official word from Apple, they might be limiting purchases to 2 iPhones per customer like they did last year.

MacRumors also reports that AT&T stores have received their iPhone 3Gs for the displays and they are to be activated on Thursday, July 10th, and must have downloaded 3rd-party applications on the displays in time for the launch on July 11th at 8 a.m.

They also report that Apple held a meeting to discuss sales of the iPhone. Speculation says that Apple stores might be opening at 8 a.m. to mimic AT&T's launch. Leak information also speculates that you will be able to use Apple gift cards, credit cards and checks to purchase the iPhone 3G (for the original iPhone launch, credit cards were required to track purchases).

Update: Apple has confirmed an 8 a.m. launch of the iPhone 3G at all Apple Stores. For more information about the iPhone launch at Apple Stores, visit the Apple retail website.

Phoenix, Arizona Apple Store planned

The Graphic Mac is reporting that a new Apple Store has been planned for Phoenix, Arizona. This will be the state's fifth Apple Store, and Phoenix's second.

The new store will open in the Arrowhead Mall. James at The Graphic Mac says he's seen the black construction wall and white Apple Logo in front of a large retail space on the mall's lower level. Rumor has it this store will open at the end of this month.

If any TUAW readers want to send us a spyshot of the construction, please do! You'll find the tip link towards the bottom of the page.

Apple Stores receive iPhone 3G window displays

Gizmodo is reporting that Apple stores have started receiving their new window displays for the iPhone 3G launch. The iPhone display is similar to those that showed for last year's iPhone launch -- with a few design changes to mimic the iPhone 3G.

According to Gizmodo, Apple stores around the country will be putting up these displays today. Gizmodo has a gallery of pictures on their site for your viewing pleasure.

Found Footage: Waiting in line for an iPhone 3G

Our good friends over at Engadget posted an exclusive interview from the line that is forming outside of the 5th Avenue Apple Store. In the video, they interview the first three people in line and ask them what they're doing. According to Daniel, the group leader, they are trying to "break a world record for most time spent waiting in line to buy something."

Top 100 retail landmarks: Apple makes the list

RetailWeek recently compiled a list of the top 100 retail locations around the world. What did they find? Well, Apple holds two positions in their list: one for the 5th Avenue store (New York) and one for the Regent Street store (London).

According to the list, the 5th Avenue store has all three key deciding factors: "excitement, education and ease." They go on to say that the glass cube is in line with the "DNA of the brand."

Does this change your mind about shopping at Apple's retail stores? Be sure to take our poll and drop a comment.

Apple Store West Edmonton: Your reports

Apple opened a new retail store in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada this weekend, number six for The Great White North. As usual, we asked any TUAW readers who may have attended to share their reports and/or pictures. So, did you go, and if you did, how was it? Let us know in the comments. Here's hoping you scored a T-shirt!

If you haven't gone down to the store yet, grab your camera and add anything especially interesting to our Flickr pool!

Rumor: BestBuy, RadioShack to sell iPhone 3G

Boy Genius Report is reporting that Apple may allow sales of the iPhone at BestBuy and RadioShack retail stores in the U.S. This, of course, is in addition to it being sold at Apple and AT&T stores.

This would be the first time since the iPhone's introduction that a third-party reseller would be able to sell the iPhone. These rumors are definitely unconfirmed at this point so we don't know if this will happen in time for the retail giants to get in on the July 11th introduction sale.
