TUAW Live from the 360iDev Denver iPhone development conference

About a month ago we reported that the 360iDev conference was going to be held in Denver, Colorado. The event is now underway, and since I happen to live in the area, I'm attending the event that's billed as the premiere iPhone developer conference in the world.

There are certainly a good number of iPhone developers on hand -- Tom Ortega of 360|Conferences, the group that's running the event, mentioned that the registration was at 225 developers, more than attended the last event in San Jose, CA.

The sessions last for the next day and a half, and there are plenty of opportunities for developers to learn, meet, and party. Stay tuned to TUAW for short interviews and more info from 360iDev.

iPhone developers: 360 | iDev Conference TUAW reader discount

iPhone developers who weren't able to make it to this year's WWDC are in luck -- the 360 | iDev Conference is planned for September 27 - 30, 2009 at the Curtis Hotel in downtown Denver, Colorado.

The conference is being organized by 360 | Conferences, the team that presented the highly successful 360 | iDev conference in San Jose, CA earlier this year. There's a half-day hands-on advanced debugging session planned for Sunday, September 27th, followed by three full days of sessions by notable speakers such as master iPhone developer Bill Dudney, Phil Libin (CEO of Evernote), and David Barnard of AppCubby.

Conference registration is limited to 400 or so individuals, so if you're planning on attending, it's time to get moving. 360 | Conferences provided TUAW with a special code that you can use to get a 20% discount on registration. Just enter the code phrase TUAWiDevDiscount (case-sensitive) when you register for the conference to receive your discount. They've also provide a discount code (TUAWInMoDiscount) for the InsideMobile Conference planned for this upcoming weekend in San Jose.

With the iPhone app world still showing an amazing amount of growth, this may be the perfect time to build or strengthen your iPhone development skills.

Have you registered for WWNC 2009 yet?

If you haven't registered yet, you'd better get moving since WWNC 2009 starts on July 31st!

What? You don't know what WWNC 2009 is? It's the WorldWide Newton Conference, and it's planned for July 31st through August 2nd in Vancouver, B.C. Lest you think that the Newton platform is a Dead Parrot, you should be aware that there is still a vital community of Newton enthusiasts.

Some of the expected topics at the conference are:
  • Uses for Newton in today's world: for personal and business use (e.g. connecting to company database)
  • Improving Newtsync: discussion on improving OS X's Newton sync application
  • Ebooks and Newton: development of PDF viewer applications for Newton
  • Discussion around Einstein and new hardware platforms
  • Newton programming 101 for beginners
  • How to GPS with the Newton, from A-Z
  • How to Network the Newton: NPDS, wifi, etc.
Compared to WWDC, the WorldWide Newton Conference is a bargain at just $55 (accommodations, meals, and transportation not included) for the three days. If you still feel the love for your MessagePad, you should plan on attending this conference (I'd go, but I don't think Weblogs, Inc. will pay my airfare...). Sign up now!

WWDC 09 is a sellout -- time to call your ticket scalper

Last year, the limited number of registrations to the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) sold out on May 14th. This year, the seats at Moscone Center didn't even last until May.

A tweet from @polarbearfarm alerted TUAW to the sad/happy news that WWDC sold out today. It's sad news, because there are a lot of procrastinating developers who didn't even have a chance to register. But it's also happy news, because this once again shows the vibrant and active life in the Apple development community.

As with last year's non-attendees, you'll be able to purchase session videos shortly after the conclusion of WWDC on June 12th, 2009. Next year, when you see our post saying that WWDC 2010 has opened for registration, get out there and get registered ASAP!

Apple's Q1 2009 conference call scheduled for January 21

Mark your calendars: Apple plans to conduct its first-quarter conference call on Wednesday, January 21 at 5 p.m. Eastern (2 p.m. Pacific). Apple executives will discuss the company's financial performance over the last quarter, and give their guidance as to how the next quarter is shaping up.

Audio from the conference call will be broadcast via QuickTime. When the time comes, you can visit this page and listen in. (Bonus: Check out the old QuickTime Player screenshot in the "Q1-2009" graphic.)

In Apple's last conference call, CEO Steve Jobs joined in the fun -- a rarity -- to discuss sales, margins, cash reserves, and Apple's competition.

Prepare for plenty of hyperbole and chipper "forward-looking statements" -- as well as dialtone to dialtone coverage from us here at TUAW. Be sure to check back on the 21st.

O'Reilly iPhoneLive Conference Postponed

The O'Reilly iPhoneLive Conference, which was scheduled for November 18th in San Jose, California, has been postponed.

Bill Dudney, one of the co-chairs of the conference, mentioned to me this morning that the conference had been postponed and would be rescheduled at a future date. The O'Reilly website for the conference
is now showing an announcement about the postponement, but no explanation.

Several TUAW readers have expressed their anger about the postponement, particularly because they've already purchased non-refundable airline tickets.

As we receive more info from O'Reilly about the postponement, this post will be updated.

Rolando's not dead after all

Well color me surprised -- after almost a month with no activity, the handcircus blog has sprung back into action. I was getting worried that the great-looking iPhone game Rolando was on the brink of becoming vaporware, since we were expecting it back in August, and we hadn't heard a peep since then. But no, apparently the game (which looks like an intriguing mix of Loco Roco and Kirby's Canvas) is still being developed, and is still heading for the App Store. Which is great -- we'd rather have it "when it's ready" rather than not at all.

In the meantime, the developer's been getting some attention already, nabbing some facetime in Design Week and speaking at a conference, too. We'll stick with what we said before -- that we're ready to wait -- and refrain from telling you guys to get a move on, but trust us, those conference visitors and magazine editors don't want the game nearly as much as we do. Time to finish it!

Apple pulls out of proposed Black Hat talk

Though I'm far too dumb to understand what they're talking about, I like the Black Hat hacker guys. Most of the Internet is all "New Vegas" now; all (supposedly) family friendly and glamorous and glitzy. But those guys are back on Fremont Street, gambling with everything they've got and shoulder to shoulder with the dregs of society.

Unfortunately, Apple's marketing department doesn't share my feelings. Computerworld says they've put the kibosh on a speaking engagement they were supposed to have at the conference next week in Sin City. In fact, they can't even say they were asked to pass -- everyone involved in organizing the panel, which was set up early last month and "abruptly canceled" late last month, spoke on condition of anonymity.

Which is a shame -- organizers of the conference say the panel was supposed to be all about how serious security is at Apple and how they're committed to keeping users secure. And it wasn't even supposed to be a Q&A, which is why the organizers thought it would easily be approved by marketing.

That, however, wasn't the case -- while the panel wasn't yet approved by the conference folks, the request to have the panel was pulled. We're sure the Black Hat guys will still have fun (it is Vegas, after all), but it's a shame we couldn't get that look inside Apple's security team.

Apple Expo '08 dates announced, events detailed

The Apple Expo is Europe's Apple conference -- similar to the Macworld expo in the US. Apple Expo '08 has posted details about the expo, including dates for this year's conference: Wednesday, September 17 through Saturday, September 20, in Paris, France.

Currently, there are only two iPhone events scheduled out of the over 30 planned events. It is a nice change to see that the iPhone will not "steal the show" in Europe like it does at Apple conferences in the US. You can see all of the details, exhibitors, and scheduled events on the Apple Expo website.

As we noted earlier, Apple will not be attending this year's Apple Expo.

The ultimate tech conference giveaway: an iPhone

Technology conferences are fine places to pick up vendor swag and free gifts -- after all, if you're going to travel across the country or across the ocean, a little token of appreciation is certainly in order -- but the web productivity and collaboration Office 2.0 Conference, starting this Wednesday, has taken the notion to a delightful extreme.

Every paying attendee to San Francisco-based O2con (press and bloggers are not included, darn it) will receive an iPhone 4GB model along with the $1500+ conference ticket; the iPhone will be used to manage conference contacts, schedule meetings with other participants, view schedules, chat & tag photos, and generally serve as a guide to the event. This grand experiment will result in a gaggle of more than 500 simultaneous iPhone users in the same place, on the same WiFi network. The conference app will be running on the Etelos web engine/CRM platform, seen here (bonus points to Etelos for captioning the screenshots in Comic Life, very nice touch).

As you might expect, some attendees would prefer an 8GB iPhone; they can upgrade for a mere $115. Those already packing an iPhone can change their free gift to a Playstation 3 running Linux (really, just as nice). Conference attendees who have received their iPhones are posting their impressions, raves and gripes (including a bout of domestic strife when two teenage girls became outraged that their mother had an iPhone before they did) on the O2con discussion boards.

If you're attending O2con, let us know how it goes and whether you're enjoying your "free" iPhone.

Apple extends WWDC early registration to July 7

An ADC email just arrived announcing Apple's extension of the WWDC early registration deadline to July 7. This email also features John Penn II, Senior/Lead Computer Scientist for Adobe Photoshop - at least now you know one of the guys who's responsible for making [insert idolized star here] look so good in that lifetime tabloid subscription you have. Better yet, if you're a code nerd, maybe you can go learn a thing or two from Mr. Penn II since you can still save $300 on an early registration.
