iLounge Pavilion to host iPod, iPhone devs at CES 2010

The sharks are swimming the waters around Macworld Expo. They must smell blood: first we hear that Apple may be headed to CES, and now iLounge has announced that they're sponsoring a "pavilion" at next year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. I've never been, but you have to think that there have always been at least some iPod and iPhone-related displays at CES, even if most of the hoopla is a few states away at Macworld. But now CES is making its move, apparently. With Apple pulling out of Macworld for good (and that event focusing on the Mac), CES and iLounge may be looking to get in on some of the iPod and Apple action.

In fact, there's a FAQ for the event that says exactly that -- CEA heard that exhibitors were planning on skipping Macworld, and weren't sure about appearing at CES, so this pavilion is designed to pull exactly those people in.

Obviously all of these events are almost a full 12 months off, and anything can happen in between now and then. But CES and iLounge apparently aren't wasting any time trying to nab some iPod-related attention away from IDG's Macworld sans Apple.

iPhone 101: Eight 3G iPhone Plan Pricing Details You Need to Know

Thinking about signing up for iPhone 3G service? Here are some pricing details you'll want to know about.

1. You have to pay $18 or $36. A one time $36 activation fee still applies to 3G plans, the way it did for the first generation iPhone. If you're a current AT&T subscriber, this fee is only $18.

2. Data costs more. On the original iPhone plans, unlimited data cost $20/month. The new iPhone 3G plans cost $30/month.

3. Exchange costs $15/month more beyond that. The normal 3G iPhone data plan costs $30/month. Enterprise data costs $45/month. This buys you access to all the standard Exchange features. If you need to get Exchange mail, or access data inside your firewall, you're an enterprise user. AT&T isn't saying they'll disable ActiveSync and Exchange on normal iPhone plans for non-corporate users so we're unsure how they'll police this policy. Our Christina speculates that the enterprise plan sets up the server to accept exchange support; you could do IMAP from your exchange account but if you want non-MobileMe push, you gotta be on the enterprise tier plan.

Talkiphone posts iPhone FAQ

TalkiPhone has posted their 101-question-long iPhone FAQ. The FAQ, which runs the gamut from "Are AT&T stores really going to open at 6PM on June 29th" to "Will the iPhone support Adobe PDF documents?" collects information from around the Internet and combines it into a single easy-to-search document. The FAQ is clearly a work in progress and some of their answers differ from what I have been led to understand, so take the information there with a wee grain of salt. You can always review our iPhone posts for more tidbits on the greatest gadget since the sliced-bread slicer.

Complete-my-Album FAQ

No Virginia, free iTunes Singles-of-the-Week and Discover-Downloads will not make it cheaper to purchase entire albums. And you only have a limited time, about six months, to complete each album after you purchase any track. These, and other fun Complete-my-Album FAQs, can be found at Apple's new FAQ document, recently posted.

And what happens when you've purchased so many tracks that your final complete-the-album purchase price is less than the cost of a single track? You're out of luck. You can't complete an album that you've already paid that much for.

Plus complete-my-TV-season isn't available. Bummer.

iPod Game FAQ

Apple recently posted an iPod Game FAQ to answer all your frequently asked (and not so frequently asked) questions about the iPod and its games. As you probably already knew, you need a 5G iPod or later to take advantage of the $4.99 games. You cannot, however, output the video to your TV as you play. And you can use localized game versions--change the iPod's language and the games will relocalize to that language. I hadn't realized that Vortex and Texas Hold'em were Apple in-house products. The rest (like Zuma, Tetris, and so on) are authored and supported by third-party companies.

Apple posts Vista FAQ

Apple support just posted a general Frequently Asked Questions list for Microsoft Vista at its site. Vista, which just launched, will be generally available for purchase in January. At this time, iTunes, QuickTime, Software Update and the iPod shuffle reset utility are all unsupported under Vista.

However, secret TUAW elves (*kof*David C.*kof) who have been testing Vista report that iTunes and QuickTime 7 worked flawlessly under Vista even if they're officially unsupported.

Apple promises to keep the FAQ updated over time as the facts change on the ground.

Apple adds Nike+ section to iPod Support site

Apple must have heard our jab at their one-line Nike+ Sport Kit support document yesterday and decided to whip up a full-blown Nike+ support section of their much-loved iPod Support site. Delusions of grandeur aside, the support section offers the typical troubleshooting and 'How do I...' sections, along with a video tutorial detailing how to run how to get on your feet with using this slick new kit to enhance your run. It also includes a link to Apple's new Nike + iPod Sport Kit discussions sub-category which lives under their iPod nano forum. While these should be handy new resources for all sorts of internet-related arguments over Nike and why 5G iPods didn't make the cut, just remember to still get out on your feet with your shiny new running kit, as we're pretty sure Apple Stores won't accept "I just never got around to it" as a return excuse.

Tip of the Day

Use Spotlight as a reference tool. Type any word in the Spotlight box and one of the top entries will be a definition. Click on it, and it will bring up the dictionary application to check the word in either the dictionary, thesaurus, Apple database, or Wikipedia.
